Check the service status first, then restart and retry before moving to platform-specific repairs. Note the exact error and where the download stops: a percentage alone does not identify the cause.
Start by identifying where the download fails
Before changing settings, record the device and platform (for example, Windows with Steam or a PS5), the game, any error code or message, the percentage or file size where it stops, and whether other downloads work. These details help distinguish a single-game problem from one affecting the launcher, connection, or device.

- One game fails: Check that title’s error message, destination drive, and installation files.
- Every download fails: Check platform status, launcher state, and the network connection.
- It stops at a repeatable file size: Look for a storage format or permissions clue rather than assuming the percentage itself explains the failure.
Check for an outage, then restart and retry
Check the service status page for the storefront or console network before deleting files or reinstalling. Steam notes that a system-wide problem can make the service inaccessible; Epic and PlayStation also direct users to check status when downloads stall. If an incident is reported, wait for it to clear and try again.
If status is normal, restart the launcher and device, then retry the download. On Steam, its installation and update guidance also suggests changing the download region or trying another drive when appropriate. Those are targeted options, not steps every user needs to perform.

Apply the repair for your platform
Steam on PC
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and select the option to clear the download cache. Steam says this can resolve games that will not download or start. You will need to sign in again afterward; installed games are not affected. Steam Support: Clear download cache
- If an installation or update still fails, use Steam’s Repair Library Folder option for the relevant library. A library folder with broken permissions can interfere with installation.
- For a game that is installed but will not update or run correctly, use Verify integrity of game files in the game’s properties. This checks installed files and can repair corrupted ones.
- If installation errors persist, try a different available drive. Check that the intended drive is connected, has enough free space for the game and update, and is writable. Follow Steam’s current troubleshooting instructions for the exact error. Steam Support: Update and installation issues
Epic Games Launcher on PC
For a download that is stuck, Epic’s troubleshooting steps include signing out, force-closing Epic tasks, and signing back in to retry. Its instructions also describe enabling debug logging to help diagnose the problem. For a slow download rather than a complete stall, check that the launcher’s speed limit is off, then test Ethernet or another internet connection. Epic’s page covers additional checks such as device cache, DNS, proxy settings, and allowed domains; follow its current steps because menu names can change. PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
First test the console’s network connection and check PlayStation Network status. For relevant stuck-download cases, PlayStation points PS5 owners to Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option. Its PS4 guidance recommends rebuilding the database. Use the instructions for your exact console model and follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode directions; recovery options differ by generation. PlayStation Support: Game download issues

EA app on PC
If an EA app download is stuck, try the app’s App Recovery cache-clear option. Pay attention to the specific error: EA says a PC download stopping at 4 GB may indicate the destination drive uses FAT32, which cannot handle individual files larger than 4 GB. Try one change at a time and retry the download so you can tell whether it helped. If the device and router support it, connect by Ethernet; testing another internet connection can also show whether the usual network is involved. A wired test checks the Wi-Fi path, but it cannot fix an outage, account entitlement problem, broken launcher cache, or failing drive.

- Restart the router and test whether other devices can reach the internet.
- Check the launcher’s speed-limit setting and review firewall rules that could block it.
- Consider whether a proxy, DNS configuration, or managed network is involved. Steam notes that university networks and proxies may block required ports.
- If the problem appears only at certain times, Steam says that pattern can suggest an ISP-related issue.

Check storage and installation permissions
Confirm that the destination drive is available, has enough free space for both the game and its update, and allows the launcher to write files. An update can fail even when the game itself is already installed if the drive is nearly full or the library folder has a permissions problem. Use the platform’s repair or verification option where available; do not delete game data or saves unless the platform provides specific backup guidance.

Choose the next step from the evidence
When several causes seem possible, prioritize the least disruptive checks and use the symptom to narrow the layer at fault:
- Check scope: Does one game fail, or do all downloads on the platform?
- Check the service: Is the relevant platform reporting an incident?
- Check the layer: Does the error point to the launcher, network, permissions, or drive?
- Check the clue: Is there a repeatable file-size stop, disk-space warning, or connection pattern?
- Prefer reversible tests first: Restart, test another connection, or use the platform’s cache or repair control before considering a reinstall.
Do not infer a cause from “0%,” a particular percentage, or a stalled progress bar alone. The platform, exact message, file-size behavior, and whether other downloads work are more useful clues.
