On a supported Galaxy tablet, the first fix is Settings > Display > Taskbar: turn the switch on, or turn it off and on once if it is already enabled. Then open an app or window and check the bottom edge. Samsung describes the taskbar as an app shortcut strip that appears while an app or window is open.
If that setting is missing or greyed out, the problem is different from a taskbar that is visible but unresponsive. Model and One UI eligibility, the active launcher, full-screen app behavior, and a wider touchscreen or system fault each require a different next step.

Start with the Taskbar setting
Open Settings, select Display, and look for Taskbar. On supported models, enable the switch. If it already says on, switch it off, wait briefly, switch it on again, open an app or window, and inspect the bottom of the screen.

What should happen
The taskbar is intended to appear at the bottom while an app or window is open and to provide quick access to apps. Samsung’s current U.S. guidance limits the taskbar to four pinned apps. It is therefore normal for the strip not to behave like a permanently visible desktop dock in every screen or mode.
Before troubleshooting, note whether the tablet is in portrait or landscape orientation, whether an app is open, and whether the lower edge is being covered by a case. Take a screenshot of the Display settings page if possible. These details make it easier to tell a normal visibility change from a failed setting.

Before changing anything, define the scope
Run three quick comparisons. First, check both orientations if the tablet supports rotation. Second, open a Samsung app and a different app. Third, tap controls near the top and middle of the screen. If only one app, one orientation, or one narrow strip is affected, the likely troubleshooting path is different from a failure across the whole display.
Also check whether another person has changed the default home app, accessibility settings, or display mode. Do not infer a hardware failure from a single missing strip until the Taskbar control and touch response elsewhere have been tested.
When the taskbar is missing only in certain screens
Compare a normal app with another app
Open a second app or window after enabling the setting. If the taskbar appears there, the original app or its full-screen presentation is the likely boundary. Check whether the original app has an immersive or full-screen control and leave that mode before judging the tablet.
Do not confuse it with the Navigation bar
Samsung separately notes that the Navigation bar can disappear in full-screen apps. The Navigation bar is the system area used for navigation controls; the taskbar is the app shortcut strip. A full-screen app can hide navigation controls without indicating that the Taskbar feature is broken. Compare the same app in a non-full-screen view and check the Taskbar switch independently.

Check after opening a window
Samsung’s taskbar description refers to an app or window being open. If you are looking at a home screen or a screen with no active app window, open an app and check the lower edge again. This simple context test avoids changing settings for behavior that may be expected.
Check the edge, not just the center
Look along the entire bottom edge in both orientations. A case lip, keyboard cover, or protector can obscure a thin strip without changing the software setting. Remove the cover temporarily only if it blocks your view or presses on the display; buying a new accessory is not a taskbar fix.
If Taskbar is greyed out or the menu is unavailable
Confirm the tablet and software first
- Open Settings > About tablet and note the model name and model number.
- Open the software-information screen and note the One UI version.
- Return to Settings > Display and check whether Taskbar is present.
- Compare the model and software with Samsung’s current taskbar support information for your region.
Regional editions and software releases can expose different controls. A missing menu is evidence to verify eligibility, not proof that the display hardware is defective. If the tablet is managed by a school or business, policy restrictions may also change which settings are available; ask the administrator before resetting or changing management software.
Test the default launcher
A Samsung Community user with a Tab S8+ reported that Taskbar was greyed out while Nova Launcher was the default launcher and became available after switching back to One UI Home. This is a single community report, not an official rule for every Galaxy tablet or One UI release, but it is a useful, reversible test.

- Open the Home app or Home application entry.
- Select One UI Home if another launcher is selected.
- Return to Settings > Display and check the Taskbar control again.
If the switch becomes available, leave One UI Home selected while testing. If nothing changes, restore your preferred launcher only after recording the result. Do not treat the community observation as a promise that changing launchers will solve every greyed-out control. Switching the home app should not delete your files, but it can change the home-screen layout, so make a note of your preferred launcher before testing.
When the taskbar is enabled but does not respond
Check whether touch works elsewhere
Tap a different app icon, open Settings, and scroll in another part of the screen. If those controls respond, the fault may be limited to the taskbar process or the current app context. If taps fail across the display, continue with the touchscreen steps below instead of repeatedly tapping the taskbar.
Try one deliberate tap rather than a rapid series, and test with the tablet held normally. A delayed response from every control points to system load or touch input; a failure limited to one icon points more toward that app or the taskbar session.

Close recent apps and restart normally
- Open the recent-apps view and close apps you are not using.
- Restart the tablet using the on-screen power menu.
- After it starts, open one app or window and test the taskbar before reopening all your previous apps.
Samsung says temporary system problems and background processes can affect responsiveness. A restart clears the immediate session without deleting your files or resetting your settings. Let the tablet finish starting before launching several apps; testing immediately after boot gives a cleaner result.
Install available system updates
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Select Download and install, or the equivalent update command shown on your tablet.
- Install an available update when the tablet has sufficient battery and a stable connection.
- Restart and test the taskbar in a normal app window.
Labels and menu positions can vary by software version. If no update is offered, continue with the remaining isolation steps rather than repeatedly checking the same screen. Keep the tablet connected to power during a lengthy update and do not interrupt it once installation begins.
When touch is unreliable across the screen
Remove physical interference
- Remove the case temporarily if its edge can press against the display.
- Remove or lift a screen protector if it is cracked, lifting, misaligned, or touching the screen edge.
- Clean and dry the display and your fingers.
- Test without gloves, moisture, or objects resting on the screen.
These checks address physical interference with touch. They do not restore a missing software menu, so use them when other controls also fail to register taps. If touch improves as soon as a protector or case is removed, replace or realign that accessory rather than changing system settings.
Use Safe mode to check downloaded apps
Samsung’s touchscreen guidance recommends testing Safe mode when downloaded apps may be involved. Safe mode starts the tablet with downloaded apps disabled for the test. The exact entry path can vary by model, so use the power-menu Safe mode option shown by your tablet rather than relying on a button sequence from a different Galaxy model.
- Open the power menu.
- Touch and hold the on-screen Power off option until the Safe mode prompt appears, if your model presents that method.
- Enter Safe mode and test touch in Settings and in an app window.
- Restart normally to leave Safe mode.
If touch works in Safe mode but fails after a normal start, a downloaded app or overlay is a stronger suspect. Remove or disable recently installed apps one at a time, restarting after each change. If the same touch failure remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Record which test produced which result; that information is more useful than simply reporting that the taskbar “sometimes” fails.
Optimize before requesting service
Samsung’s touchscreen troubleshooting also recommends optimizing the device. Use the device-care or optimization controls available in your software, then retest the screen. If the display remains unreliable after cleaning, removing possible interference, restarting, updating, and Safe mode testing, treat it as a device support issue rather than a taskbar-setting issue.
Force-restart a frozen Galaxy tablet
Use a force restart only when the normal power menu cannot be used because the tablet is frozen or the screen will not accept input.

A force restart is not a factory reset: it is intended to recover a stalled session. It does not establish that the taskbar itself is defective, so continue the diagnostic sequence after the tablet comes back on. If the tablet repeatedly freezes again, note what was open and contact support rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.

If Samsung Members is installed, open its support or diagnostics area and run the available touchscreen and device checks. Availability and names vary by model and region. Save the result, especially if it reports a display or touch fault. Diagnostics do not replace the setting and Safe mode tests, but they give support a device-specific record.
Use this decision path for the fastest diagnosis
- Find the control: check Settings > Display > Taskbar.
- Enable or re-enable it: switch it on, or off and on once.
- Check context: open an app or window, leave full-screen mode, and compare a second app.
- Check eligibility: verify the model and One UI version if the menu is missing or greyed out.
- Check the launcher: temporarily select One UI Home when a third-party launcher is active, then recheck the control.
- Recover responsiveness: close recent apps, restart, and install an available software update.
- Separate touch failure: remove case or protector interference, clean and dry the display, and test Safe mode.
- Recover a freeze: force-restart with the model-appropriate button combination.
- Escalate: run Samsung Members diagnostics if available and contact Samsung Support or arrange service when the failure persists.
What not to do first
- Do not buy a replacement tablet for a setting or launcher problem.
- Do not assume a case or screen protector is the cause unless it physically interferes with touch; remove it only as a diagnostic test.
- Do not jump straight to a factory reset. The taskbar guidance does not prescribe a factory reset as a first-line fix, and resetting can erase local data and settings.
- Do not assume clearing cache or wiping a cache partition will restore the taskbar. Those actions are not established as first steps by the taskbar instructions used here.
- Do not treat one community report about Nova Launcher as a universal Samsung requirement.
- Do not infer a widespread hardware defect from one incident. Samsung’s support pages provide procedures, not a failure-rate statistic.
When to contact Samsung
Contact Samsung Support or arrange service when the screen remains unresponsive after a normal restart, software update, physical-interference checks, and Safe mode testing; when the tablet repeatedly freezes; or when diagnostics identify a hardware fault. If Samsung Members is installed, run its diagnostics and keep the result with your model number and One UI version.
When you contact support, describe whether the Taskbar switch is missing, greyed out, enabled but invisible, or visible but untappable. Include whether the problem occurs in every app or only in full-screen mode, whether One UI Home is selected, and whether touch works elsewhere. Those distinctions help support investigate the correct layer instead of treating every symptom as the same taskbar failure.
Have the tablet’s exact model, software version, region, recent update date, launcher name, and Safe mode result ready. Tell support whether removing an accessory changed the behavior and whether a force restart temporarily helped. Avoid deleting data or performing a factory reset unless Samsung specifically instructs you after backup and other troubleshooting are complete.
