How to Fix a Galaxy Home Screen Layout That Keeps Changing

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

If your Galaxy home screen rearranged itself after an update, transfer, restore, or screen rotation, the most likely cause is a changed layout rule rather than a defective display. One UI 7 revised the supported home-screen grids, and Samsung says an earlier 4×5 or 5×5 arrangement may be adjusted to the 4×6 or 5×6 grids now supported in its cited One UI 7 guidance. A restore can also leave blank spaces, while accidental touches can move or remove icons.

Match the symptom to its trigger, then apply the corresponding fix: choose a supported grid, enable Lock Home screen layout to prevent touch-driven changes, and edit icons or widgets in portrait mode rather than landscape. Menu names and available choices vary by Galaxy model, region, and One UI version.

Start by identifying when the layout changes

Do not change several settings at once. Note exactly when the arrangement becomes different and what the screen looks like afterward. Samsung’s documented explanations cover three useful patterns, but they are not an exhaustive diagnostic test.

When it changes Typical symptom Most relevant explanation First action
Immediately after a One UI 7 update Icons shift, a previous grid no longer fits, or blank cells appear The update revised supported grid dimensions Open Home screen grid settings and select a supported grid
During setup, Smart Switch transfer, or backup restore Apps and widgets return with gaps or a different arrangement Transferred data or a restore can alter grid settings and positions Check the grid, then place items again in portrait mode
Only after turning the phone sideways Apps and widgets realign in landscape or cannot be moved Landscape has a different arrangement and restricts editing Return to portrait before editing; review rotation or landscape settings
After touching or swiping near an icon An icon or widget moves, disappears, or lands on another panel Accidental touch input changed the layout Enable Lock Home screen layout

If the change happens at a different time, record the Galaxy model, country or region, One UI version, and the action immediately before the change. Samsung notes that both the setting names and behavior can differ across those variables.

Fix a layout changed by One UI 7

One UI 7’s grid change is the key explanation when a formerly stable arrangement changes right after updating. Samsung’s US One UI 7 troubleshooting guidance states that only 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids are supported in One UI 7. Samsung Gulf describes the resulting blank spaces or shifted items as a revision in grid support. Earlier 4×5 and 5×5 arrangements therefore may be adjusted to fit the new choices.

Select a supported grid

  1. Go to the Home screen and touch and hold an empty area.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Home screen grid.
  4. Select 4×6 or 5×6, if those choices are shown on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

The 4×6 option provides four columns and six rows, or 24 available positions on a page. The 5×6 option provides five columns and six rows, or 30 positions. Neither choice recreates every older arrangement. Select the one that gives you the spacing and number of positions you need, then move icons and widgets back into place.

Compare the two supported choices

Grid Positions per page Use it when What to expect
4×6 24 You want four columns and do not need the extra column offered by 5×6 An older 4×5 page gains a row, while positions from a former 5×5 page may still need rearranging
5×6 30 You want five columns and six rows for more positions on each page Items from an older 5×5 layout may shift as the added row is accommodated

These dimensions describe available Home screen positions, not a promise that every icon will retain its former coordinates. After choosing a grid, check every panel rather than only the first page. A gap may be intentional, or it may be the place where a widget or transferred app was previously located.

If your phone shows different grid choices, do not assume the One UI 7 US instructions apply exactly. Samsung’s support guidance warns that availability varies by model, region, and software version. Use the grid options actually displayed on your phone and record your One UI version if you need model-specific help.

Why blank spaces can remain

Changing the grid changes the set of positions used by the Home screen. An icon that occupied a position in a former 4×5 or 5×5 arrangement may not map neatly to the new grid, so an apparently empty cell can appear even though no hardware or display area is damaged. The same visual result can occur when a restore brings back apps without restoring every widget or its previous position.

Do not fill every blank immediately. First decide whether the space is part of the arrangement you want. If you later select a different supported grid, placing items too early can create more work. Choose the grid, inspect all pages, and only then rebuild the layout.

Prevent accidental moves with Lock Home screen layout

When the arrangement changes after handling the phone, the built-in lock is the appropriate prevention step. It blocks accidental repositioning or removal of Home screen items while leaving normal app launching available.

Enable the lock from the Home screen

  1. Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.
  2. Open the Home screen settings. On some versions this appears as Settings after the long press.
  3. Turn on Lock Home screen layout.

Use the Settings app when the long-press path is different

Some Galaxy versions expose the same control through Settings > Display > Home screen. Open that page and enable Lock Home screen layout if it is listed there.

Locking is not a repair for every kind of change. It is designed to prevent accidental touch-based movement or removal; it does not undo a grid adjustment made by an update, and it does not explain a different landscape arrangement. Set the grid first, arrange the pages, and then enable the lock.

What the lock can and cannot tell you

If the layout stays stable after the lock is enabled, accidental touch is a plausible explanation for the earlier movement. That observation does not prove that every previous change had the same cause. If blank cells appeared immediately after an update, the grid revision remains the relevant explanation even when the lock prevents further manual movement.

If an icon appears to move while the lock is on, record the exact circumstance instead of repeatedly toggling the control. Check whether the phone was rotated, completing a restore, or still finishing setup. Samsung describes the lock as protection against accidental rearrangement, not as a universal freeze for every system-driven layout adjustment.

Correct changes that occur only in landscape

Samsung says landscape mode can realign apps and widgets and can restrict editing. That means an arrangement that looks wrong after rotating the phone may be a landscape presentation rather than a permanent change to the portrait Home screen.

Edit in portrait mode

  1. Rotate the phone upright so the Home screen is in portrait orientation.
  2. Move, remove, or resize icons and widgets while still in portrait.
  3. Rotate back only after the portrait arrangement is correct.

If the layout changes every time the handset rotates, temporarily disable automatic rotation or review the Home screen’s landscape behavior in the Home screen settings. The exact label and location vary by One UI version. This temporary check tells you whether rotation is the trigger; it does not change the grid selected for portrait mode.

When editing controls seem unavailable

Do not treat the inability to drag an icon in landscape as evidence that the icon is locked or the launcher is broken. Return to portrait, where Samsung documents Home screen editing, and make the change there. If the arrangement also changes in portrait without an update, restore, or touch trigger, continue with the transfer and version checks below.

Separate a visual rotation change from a permanent move

Check the same page in portrait before moving anything. If the icon is in its expected portrait position, avoid rebuilding the page based only on the landscape view. If it is displaced in both orientations, note when that displacement first appeared and use the update, restore, or accidental-touch branches rather than treating rotation as the sole cause.

Repair gaps after a transfer or restore

A replacement phone, Smart Switch transfer, or backup restore can reproduce apps and data without reproducing every original Home screen position. Samsung says transferred apps and data can leave empty spaces where apps or widgets had been, and its One UI 7 troubleshooting notes that a restore may alter prior grid settings.

Use this order after setup

  1. Confirm which grid choices are available under Home screen grid.
  2. Select the grid that matches your intended column and row count.
  3. Check each Home screen panel for empty cells, missing widgets, or icons that moved to another panel.
  4. Add or reposition the items in portrait mode.
  5. When the arrangement is stable, enable Lock Home screen layout to reduce accidental changes.

An empty cell after a restore does not by itself prove that an app failed to transfer. First check the app list and the other Home screen panels. A widget may also require the app to be present before it can be placed again.

Distinguish restore behavior from an update

Write down whether the first change occurred during the initial setup sequence or only after the phone installed One UI 7. If both events happened close together, test one variable at a time: select the available grid, arrange the portrait pages, and observe whether a later rotation causes the difference. This history is more useful to support staff than a general report that the “screen keeps changing.”

Check every panel before concluding that content is missing

A transfer-related change can look like deletion when an icon has moved to another Home screen panel or a widget has not returned. Swipe through the complete set of panels, verify the app is installed, and then rebuild only the items that are genuinely absent. This avoids mistaking an altered position for a failed transfer.

Use a symptom-based decision path

The following branches keep the fix proportional to the cause and avoid treating a software layout symptom as a hardware failure.

There are blank spaces immediately after an update

  • Open Home screen grid.
  • Choose 4×6 or 5×6 when those are the choices provided by the One UI 7 installation.
  • Rearrange items in portrait mode.
  • Enable Lock Home screen layout after arranging.

Samsung’s explanation is a grid-support revision, so replacing the phone, screen, or case is not a documented solution for this symptom.

Only one icon moves after handling the phone

  • Check whether the change occurs while touching or swiping near the icon.
  • Arrange it in portrait mode.
  • Turn on Lock Home screen layout.

If the icon still changes position while the layout is locked, note whether the event coincides with rotation, a restore, or another system action; the lock is intended for accidental movement and does not cover every system-driven change.

The layout differs only when the phone is sideways

  • Return to portrait before attempting any edit.
  • Review automatic rotation or the Home screen landscape setting.
  • Compare the portrait arrangement before deciding that items were permanently moved.

The arrangement changed during device setup

  • Check the selected grid.
  • Look across all Home screen panels for transferred apps.
  • Replace widgets and fill intentional spaces in portrait mode.
  • Lock the finished layout.

The grid changed and icons also moved

Treat the grid as the first variable. A revised number of columns or rows can make several icons appear displaced at once. Select the available grid, then assess individual icon moves. If only one item changes after handling the phone, the lock is the relevant next step; if the whole page shifted after an update, continue with grid adjustment.

What to do when the menus do not match

There is no single universal path for every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s support pages cover different regions and software versions and explicitly caution that settings vary by model, region, and version. A missing Home screen grid or differently named option is therefore a compatibility clue, not proof that the feature has failed.

Collect the details needed for a precise answer

  • Galaxy model name and model number.
  • Country or region where the phone is being used.
  • One UI version and Android version shown in the phone’s software information.
  • Whether the change began after an update, transfer, restore, rotation, or touch.
  • Whether the symptom is a blank cell, a shifted grid, a moved icon, a missing widget, or a different landscape arrangement.

With those details, consult the support instructions for that model and region rather than forcing the US One UI 7 grid path onto a different edition. The exact available grid choices are the authoritative choices for that device.

Describe the sequence, not just the result

For useful troubleshooting, report the order of events: for example, “the phone updated, the former 5×5 page showed gaps, and the portrait page stayed stable after selecting 5×6,” or “the icon moved only after the phone was handled and stopped moving after the layout was locked.” Include whether the behavior occurs on one panel or every panel. This separates a grid-wide adjustment from a single accidental move.

Limits of the documented fixes

Samsung’s guidance explains supported grids, accidental movement protection, landscape editing restrictions, and transfer or restore effects. It does not provide an incidence rate for the problem, so claims that the behavior is “common” or that a particular percentage of phones are affected are not established. The 4×6 and 5×6 figures are product settings, not statistics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These steps also do not establish that every changing layout has the same cause. A change that cannot be tied to an update, restore, rotation, or touch needs model-specific investigation. Record the trigger and the exact One UI version before seeking further support, and avoid assuming that a grid change or landscape realignment indicates a failing display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Galaxy home screen change after a One UI 7 update?

Samsung says One UI 7 supports 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids in its cited US guidance. Earlier 4×5 or 5×5 arrangements may be adjusted, leaving shifted icons or blank spaces. Open Home screen grid and choose one of the choices shown on your phone.

How do I stop icons from moving when I handle my Galaxy phone?

Touch and hold an empty Home screen area, open Home screen settings, and enable Lock Home screen layout. Some versions also place it under Settings > Display > Home screen.

Can a Smart Switch transfer or restore create empty Home screen spaces?

Yes. Samsung says transferred apps and data can leave empty spaces where apps or widgets were positioned, and a restore can alter prior grid settings. Check every panel, select the intended grid, and rebuild missing items in portrait mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I move an icon while my Galaxy is in landscape mode?

Samsung says landscape mode can realign apps and widgets and restrict editing. Rotate to portrait before moving, removing, or resizing Home screen items.

Which Galaxy Home screen grid should I choose?

On the cited One UI 7 US guidance, the supported choices are 4×6 and 5×6. Choose the option that matches the number of columns and rows you want, using the choices actually displayed on your model and in your region.

Does Lock Home screen layout restore an arrangement changed by an update?

No. The lock is intended to prevent accidental repositioning or removal. It does not reverse a grid adjustment caused by an update or explain a different landscape arrangement. Select and arrange the grid first, then enable the lock.

What details should I provide if Samsung’s menu path is different?

Provide the Galaxy model and model number, country or region, One UI and Android versions, the action that preceded the change, and whether the symptom is a blank cell, shifted grid, moved icon, missing widget, or landscape-only arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I replace my phone or screen because the Home screen keeps changing?

Samsung’s documented fixes point to grid support, transfer or restore behavior, rotation, and accidental touch. They do not recommend replacing hardware for these software-layout symptoms.

The Bottom Line

Identify the trigger first. After an update, select the supported 4×6 or 5×6 grid shown on your Galaxy; after a transfer or restore, check every panel and rebuild gaps; after rotation, edit in portrait; and for accidental touches, enable Lock Home screen layout. If the menus or behavior differ, use your model, region, and One UI version to obtain device-specific instructions.
