If Fortnite will not update, first check Epic Games Status and Fortnite’s current known issues. A service problem may not be fixable from your device. If services are available, request the update manually, then follow the steps for your platform and the exact symptom. Note your platform, error text and where progress stops before changing settings.
Identify what is stuck before troubleshooting
The right next step depends on whether Fortnite has no update listed, a download that stalls, a platform-specific update check that hangs, or an error message. Epic recommends searching its Help Center for the exact error and checking known issues. Its console guidance also points to Fortnite’s community issues board, Fortnite Status and Epic’s service-status page.

- No update appears: use the manual update check for your platform below.
- The download starts but stalls or fails: check service status, then investigate connection, storage, cache and launcher or platform state.
- PlayStation stays on “Checking for Updates”: use the PlayStation-specific steps.
- You see “Cloud Download Failure”: follow that error’s separate instructions; it is not simply another name for a normal game-update failure.
- Your console reports insufficient space: go directly to the storage section.
Epic identifies disrupted communication with its servers as one possible cause of the PlayStation “Checking for Updates” screen. If the issue coincides with a service incident, wait for service to recover and try again rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Manually check for a Fortnite update
Use the platform’s update command to confirm whether an update is available. Platform menus can change, so if a label differs, follow the platform maker’s current support instructions rather than guessing.

Fix a Fortnite update stuck on PC
On PC, start with checks that are less disruptive than reinstalling. Epic’s broader Fortnite troubleshooting guidance covers crashes, errors and performance, rather than proving that each step fixes every update failure; treat these as troubleshooting options, not guaranteed cures.

- Search the exact error. Look it up in the Epic Games Help Center in case it has specific instructions.
- Verify Fortnite’s files. In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three-dot menu beside Fortnite, choose Manage, then Verify. Let the check finish before retrying the update.
- Clear the launcher cache. Follow Epic’s instructions for clearing the Epic Games Launcher cache, then reopen the launcher and check the update again.
- Update video drivers and Windows. Install available updates, then retry.
- Run the launcher as administrator. Close it first, then right-click Epic Games Launcher and choose Run as administrator.
- Investigate conflicts or drive problems. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also covers drive errors, background applications and exclusions, and trying a different drive where relevant. Change security or network settings only with the instructions for your setup.
- Reinstall only if simpler checks fail. Epic lists reinstalling the launcher or Fortnite as later options. Reinstallation takes time and bandwidth and will not resolve a service outage.
For connection-related download failures, Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide covers restarting the router, public DNS, device cache, Windows updates, proxy settings, flushing DNS, launcher download-speed settings and background applications. DNS and proxy changes are more involved than a restart; use Epic’s device-specific directions and change one setting at a time so you can undo it if needed.

Fix PlayStation stuck at “Checking for Updates”
For this specific PlayStation symptom, Epic recommends checking server status, restarting the modem or router, and reviewing PlayStation communication and network settings. It also lists a wired LAN connection, manual DNS and MTU settings as targeted checks. These are not universal Fortnite settings: follow Epic’s PlayStation-specific instructions rather than applying particular network values to other platforms or problems.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Fix a console update that stalls or fails
After checking that Fortnite’s services are available and requesting the update manually, work through the less disruptive console checks before reinstalling:
- Check again for a Fortnite game update.
- Install any available system software update for the console.
- Clear the console’s cache using the platform’s instructions.
- Fully restart or power-cycle the console, then retry the update.
- If the problem persists, consider reinstalling Fortnite.
Epic’s console troubleshooting guide describes these options. Because consoles are closed platforms, Epic advises contacting the console maker’s support team for persistent technical issues.

Resolve insufficient console storage
If the console explicitly says there is not enough disk space, clear the relevant console cache and delete games or apps you no longer need to free space. Epic does not specify a universal amount of free space required, so use the console’s own storage information rather than relying on a guessed number. If the update still cannot install, contact the platform’s support team. See Epic’s console storage guidance.
Fix the “Cloud Download Failure” error
Epic defines “Cloud Download Failure: Failed to Download Client Settings from the cloud” as a problem retrieving client settings. It can prevent Fortnite from loading or settings from saving, so troubleshoot it as a distinct error rather than assuming the game update itself is the cause.

When to contact support
Escalate when the same error persists after the steps that apply to your platform, or when Fortnite’s update cannot proceed despite available service, a working connection and adequate storage. Include the platform, exact error wording, where the process stops and the checks you have already tried. For persistent console issues, contact the console manufacturer; for the named Cloud Download Failure error, Epic directs players to submit a support request.
