The fix depends on which identity Fortnite is displaying. PlayStation and Xbox normally show the console account’s gamertag, while Nintendo Switch uses the Epic Games display name. An Epic display-name change therefore cannot overwrite a PlayStation or Xbox gamertag. If the name is correct during play but old in a menu, you are usually dealing with a delayed display refresh rather than a lost account change.
Use the comparison and steps below to identify the stale location first, then apply the remedy for that platform. Do not unlink an account until you have confirmed that you are signed into the intended Epic account.

Identify which name Fortnite is using
Start by checking the exact place where the old name appears. Fortnite can show an Epic identity, a console identity, or a website record that has not synchronized yet. The same account can therefore display different names in different places without anything being broken.

Epic’s support guidance explains that changing an Epic display name does not change PlayStation or Xbox gamertags, so the in-game name can differ by platform. That distinction is the key to choosing the right fix.

Fix a PlayStation or Xbox name that remains old
When the old name appears in Fortnite itself
If Fortnite’s lobby or player list shows the old PlayStation ID or Xbox gamertag, editing the Epic Games display name is the wrong operation. The console identity is controlled by the relevant PlayStation or Xbox account.
- Decide which name you actually want to change: the console account name or the Epic Games display name.
- Open the account and profile settings for the PlayStation Network or Xbox account connected to Fortnite.
- Use that platform’s option for changing the online ID or gamertag. Review any platform-specific eligibility, fee, character rules, or effects shown by the console before confirming; those terms are controlled by the platform, not by Epic.
- Complete the change, then close and reopen Fortnite so the game requests the account information again.
- Check a lobby or player list. If the old value remains in the game, confirm that Fortnite is connected to the same console account whose name you changed and that you did not edit a different PlayStation or Xbox profile.
An Epic display-name edit cannot force a different name over the console identity. If your goal is specifically to change what PlayStation or Xbox players see beside your account, make the change at the console-account level.
When the game is correct but Epic’s website is stale
Epic notes that a console-name change may not appear immediately on the Epic Account Linked accounts page. This is a website synchronization delay, not proof that the console change failed.

- Open Epic Account settings and go to Linked accounts.
- Compare the name shown there with the name currently displayed by the PlayStation or Xbox account.
- If the console and Fortnite show the new name, allow time for the Linked accounts page to synchronize.
- If the website must show the new value immediately, choose to unlink the same console account and then relink that same account.
Unlinking requires care. Epic warns that it can affect access to information stored on the Epic account, and account-link restrictions may apply. Before selecting Unlink, verify that you are using the correct Epic account, record which console account is connected, and make sure you know the sign-in details needed to reconnect it. Do not unlink a console account merely to test a theory when the name is already correct in Fortnite.
When relinking does not produce the expected name
Stop rather than repeatedly unlinking and relinking. Check that you returned to the original Epic account and connected the original PlayStation or Xbox profile, not a newly created or different account. The purpose of relinking in this situation is to refresh the Linked accounts record; it is not a way to merge accounts or transfer progress between them.
Fix a Nintendo Switch name that is still old
Nintendo Switch uses the Epic Games display name. If you have already changed that Epic name and it appears correctly during play but an old value remains in the lobby, Epic’s first prescribed step is simply to restart Fortnite.

- Exit Fortnite completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Launch Fortnite again.
- Open the lobby and check the displayed name.
If the lobby still shows the old name, perform a full Switch restart:

- Choose Restart from the power menu.
- Wait for the console to restart, then open Fortnite and check the lobby again.
This restart refreshes the application and console session without changing your account, purchases, or Fortnite progress. If the new name appears in one part of the game but not another after both restarts, note the exact screen and whether the name is correct during active play; that distinction indicates a display refresh issue rather than a failed Epic account edit.
When the Epic display name cannot be changed
Epic requires a verified email address before you can edit the display name. The account also has a two-week cooldown: Epic’s support guidance says, “You can change your display name once every two weeks.”

- Sign in to the Epic Games account connected to Fortnite.
- Open Account settings.
- Find the Display name field.
- If the field is editable, enter the desired name and save the change.
- If the field is locked, select or inspect the information icon beside it. Epic uses that notice to show information about the last change and the remaining restriction.
- Verify the account email if Epic reports that the address is unverified.
- Wait until the two-week interval has ended before trying again.
A locked field is not fixed by restarting Fortnite, changing a console gamertag, or relinking an account. Those actions address different identities and different failure points. If the lock remains after the stated interval, recheck that you are signed into the Epic account that owns the Fortnite profile; changing another Epic account will not affect the account connected to your console.

Epic display-name changes
The limiting period is not an estimated synchronization time. It is a fixed account rule: another Epic display-name change is unavailable until two weeks after the previous one. The lock and its information icon are the authoritative place to check the account’s status.
PlayStation and Xbox changes
Epic does not give a guaranteed number of minutes or hours for a console-name change to appear on the Linked accounts page. Its guidance says the page may take time to synchronize. If Fortnite and the console already show the new name, waiting is the lowest-risk option. Unlinking and relinking the same console account is the documented way to make the website display the new value immediately, but it carries the account-link warnings described above.
Nintendo Switch lobby changes
For a Switch lobby that retains an old value after the Epic name is correct in-game, restart Fortnite first and then restart the console if needed. These are the supported refresh actions for that symptom; changing a PlayStation or Xbox profile will not help.
What happens to progress, purchases, and content?
Epic says Fortnite progress, purchases, and content are stored on the Epic account linked to the console. Changing a console display name does not erase that data. The main risk is choosing the wrong account during an unlink or relink operation, which is why account identity should be confirmed before changing the connection.
A name change also does not merge two Epic accounts. If two profiles appear during sign-in, stop and identify the one that contains your Fortnite history before making any account-link change.

- Locate the stale name. Check the active game screen, the lobby, and the Epic Linked accounts webpage separately. Write down where the old value appears.
- Match the location to the identity. A PlayStation or Xbox in-game value points to the console gamertag; a Switch value points to the Epic display name; a website-only mismatch points to synchronization.
- Check whether a cooldown is involved. A lock beside Epic’s Display name field means the two-week interval or email-verification requirement is blocking the edit.
- Apply only the matching remedy. Change the console account for a console gamertag, restart Fortnite or Switch for a stale Switch lobby, or wait for synchronization or relink the same account for a stale Linked accounts page.
- Verify the account after the change. Confirm that the same Epic account and the same console profile are connected before attempting another operation.
Common mistakes that keep the old name visible
- Changing the Epic name when the console name is displayed: this updates the Epic identity but cannot overwrite a PlayStation or Xbox gamertag.
- Changing a console name when the Epic field is locked: a platform-name change does not bypass Epic’s verified-email and two-week rules.
- Assuming the Linked accounts page is real-time: that page can lag after a console-name change even when the console and game are already correct.
- Unlinking the wrong account: account-link restrictions and loss of access to information stored on the Epic account can follow an incorrect unlink.
- Leaving Fortnite suspended: a stale Switch lobby may persist until the application is closed and reopened, and in some cases until the console is restarted.
- Checking only one screen: compare the lobby, active gameplay, and Linked accounts page so that a menu refresh problem is not mistaken for an account problem.
Final verification checklist
After applying the appropriate fix, confirm all of the following:
- The name is correct in the location that originally showed the old value.
- The identity you changed matches the platform that displays it.
- Fortnite was fully reopened after a name or account change where a refresh was needed.
- The Epic account and console account are the intended pair.
- You did not start an unnecessary unlink or relink after the name was already correct in-game.
In short, a Fortnite name that will not update is usually explained by the platform displaying a different identity or by a delayed refresh. Change the identity that the affected screen actually uses, observe Epic’s two-week rule for display-name edits, and reserve account relinking for a Linked accounts webpage that remains stale after the console itself is correct.
