Then work through the low-risk fixes—restart the Stick, refresh its Wi‑Fi connection, and restart your modem and router. If the network is missing during first-time setup, use the setup-specific refresh step before resetting anything.
First, find out where the connection is failing
On an “Unable to Connect” screen, choose Network Diagnostics. You can also open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause on the remote. Amazon’s Fire TV Network Status Tool reports the connection from the Fire TV to the router and the router to the internet, then offers recommendations. Some compatible devices also display speed-test results or advanced network information.

If several devices in your home are offline, the problem may be an internet outage rather than the Stick. If other devices connect normally, focus on the Stick’s saved Wi‑Fi connection and signal path to the router. This is a practical way to narrow the cause, not a definitive diagnosis.
Fix an established Wi‑Fi connection
1. Restart the Fire TV Stick
- Unplug the Stick’s power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Give it time to restart and try connecting again.
2. Toggle Wi‑Fi and reconnect
- On the Fire TV, open Settings > Network.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off, then turn it back on.
- If the saved network still will not connect, select it and press Menu on the remote.
- Choose Select/OK to forget the network, then select it again and enter the Wi‑Fi password.

3. Restart the modem and router
- Unplug both the modem and router for one minute.
- Reconnect the modem first. Wait about one minute for it to reconnect to the internet.
- Reconnect the router and wait about one minute for its lights and connection to return.
If you can, move the Stick and router closer together to improve the signal. If several devices remain offline after restarting the network, check with your internet provider about a possible outage.
If the network is missing during first-time setup
If your Wi‑Fi name does not appear in the setup list, press Back on the Fire TV remote to refresh the list. Then try connecting again. Amazon’s setup-specific troubleshooting steps also recommend restarting the Fire TV, restarting the modem and router in modem-first order, and moving the devices closer.

Check the basics while completing setup: have the Wi‑Fi name and password ready, connect the Stick to power with its included adapter, and avoid powering it from the TV’s USB port. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions.
When Ethernet or better Wi‑Fi coverage may help
If Wi‑Fi remains impractical and your Fire TV model supports a wired connection, Ethernet may be an alternative during setup. Some devices require an Ethernet adapter. Check compatibility for your exact Fire TV model before buying one; adapter compatibility is not universal.

For a larger home with broader coverage problems, Amazon suggests mesh routers as a whole-home option and recommends using one network name (SSID) for supported 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. These are coverage and prevention suggestions, not evidence that you need a new router to fix one Stick.

If the Network Status tool, Wi‑Fi reconnection, and modem/router restart have not helped, Amazon lists a factory reset as the next step. A reset can remove device settings. Follow the instructions for your device type in Amazon’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting page rather than resetting early; Fire TV devices and Fire TV Smart TVs have separate reset instructions.
