How to Fix a Failed WordPress Update

A failed WordPress update is usually recoverable. First make a restorable copy of the database and all site files. Then match the visible symptom to the least-destructive fix: remove a stale .maintenance file if the site is stuck on the scheduled-maintenance message, use Recovery Mode for a fatal plugin or theme error, retry after checking connectivity and permissions for dashboard download failures, and use the official manual-update sequence when one-click updating cannot complete. If server limits or PHP compatibility are involved, restore a known-good backup or involve your host before changing production files.

Start with the symptom, not another update attempt

Do not repeatedly click “Update” while the installation is in an unknown state. WordPress can fail at different stages—download, file replacement, database upgrade, or loading a plugin after the new files are active—and each stage needs a different remedy. Use this triage table to choose the safest first move.

1. Make a backup you can actually restore

Before deleting a file, replacing core directories, changing permissions, or switching PHP versions, create two parts of the same recovery point:

  • The database: posts, pages, settings, users, and plugin data stored by WordPress.
  • The site files: WordPress core, the wp-content directory, configuration, uploads, and any other files the site needs.

A backup that exists but has never been tested is not a dependable rollback. Confirm that you can access both parts, know where they are stored, and understand the restore procedure offered by your host or backup system. If possible, verify the backup on a staging copy rather than experimenting on the live site. WordPress’s update guidance and its plugin/theme auto-update guidance both treat a restorable backup as the safety net for an unsuccessful update.

Record the versions involved before changing anything: the WordPress version you intended to install, the version currently shown in the dashboard (if available), the PHP version, and the time the failure occurred. This information helps a host or developer match the failure to server logs and select the correct rollback point.

2. Remove a stale maintenance file

Recognize the maintenance-state symptom

During an update, WordPress creates a hidden file named .maintenance in the site’s root directory. If the process stops before cleanup, visitors may see “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Please check back in a minute.” A failed-update notice in the dashboard can have the same underlying cause. The file is a marker; its presence does not prove that the core files, database, permissions, or PHP environment are healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delete only the marker

  1. Stop retrying the update and make the backup described above.
  2. Open the directory that contains wp-admin, wp-includes, and wp-config.php. That is the WordPress root for this installation.
  3. Use an FTP client or the host’s file manager to show hidden files, locate .maintenance, and delete it. Do not remove wp-config.php, wp-content, or an entire directory.
  4. If shell access is appropriate and you are already in the correct WordPress root, the equivalent command is rm .maintenance. Confirm the working directory first; an incorrect path can delete an unrelated file.
  5. Load the public site and /wp-admin in a private browser window. Clear any host or page cache only if it is serving the old message.

Deleting the marker restores normal request handling; it does not repair a partial core replacement. If the site now shows a PHP fatal error, missing file, database prompt, or permission error, move to the matching section instead of deleting more files.

3. Diagnose a dashboard download or connection failure

Separate download problems from write problems

A failed download means WordPress could not retrieve the package reliably. A repeated request for connection information usually indicates that the web-server process cannot write to the WordPress directory. They may appear together, but the remedies differ.

  • Connection or download symptom: check whether the server can make outbound HTTPS connections and whether a temporary network or DNS problem has cleared. Retry only after connectivity is available.
  • Connection-information prompt: inspect ownership and permissions on the WordPress directory and the directories WordPress must update. The account running PHP must be able to create and replace the required files.
  • Intermittent failure: ask the host whether a firewall, security policy, rate limit, or proxy interrupted the download. Do not disable security controls permanently just to force an update.

Check permissions without making the site world-writable

Ownership determines which account is allowed to modify a file; permissions determine what that account may do. A blanket change that grants write access to everyone can create a security problem and still fail if ownership is wrong. Ask the host for the correct web-server user and the provider’s supported WordPress permission model when you do not already manage the server. After correcting the underlying access, perform one controlled retry and watch for a new, specific error.

If the dashboard reports that the update completed but the site still behaves as before, verify that you are editing the correct installation. Domain aliases, staging copies, and multiple WordPress roots can make a successful update appear ineffective.

4. Use the official manual update path

Manual updating is the fallback when one-click updating cannot download or unpack the release. It changes core files, so keep the backup available and use the package that matches the release you intend to run. Do not treat manual updating as a way to preserve edits made directly inside WordPress core: distributed core files are replaced, and those edits should instead live in a plugin or child theme.

Prepare the installation

  1. Confirm the target WordPress release and save the backup of files and database.
  2. Ensure you can reach the site through FTP, a hosting file manager, or shell access. If you cannot access files, stop and ask the host for assistance.
  3. Deactivate plugins from the dashboard if the dashboard is available. This reduces the chance that a plugin interferes while core files are being replaced. If the dashboard is inaccessible, do not guess at database edits; use the documented recovery or FTP approach and involve a professional when needed.
  4. Download the matching WordPress package from the official WordPress distribution source using a trusted connection. Keep the package outside the live root until you are ready to copy its contents.

Replace core files, not site content

  1. Remove a leftover .maintenance file if the failed automatic update created one.
  2. Replace the existing wp-admin directory with the directory from the release package.
  3. Replace the existing wp-includes directory with the package’s directory.
  4. Replace the distributed WordPress root files from the package. Preserve your site’s wp-config.php and do not overwrite the wp-content directory, which contains uploads, themes, and plugins.
  5. Keep custom core-file edits out of this process. They will not survive replacement; recover them from the backup only if you have a specific, documented reason.

Finish in the browser

  1. Visit /wp-admin. WordPress may detect that the files are newer than the database.
  2. If WordPress presents an upgrade.php database prompt, run it immediately and wait for the completion message. Do not close the page or start another update while the database upgrade is running.
  3. Sign in, check the dashboard and a representative public page, and review error notices.
  4. Reactivate plugins one at a time. Test the public site after each activation so a new failure can be tied to a particular component.

The database step matters because a core release can require schema or option changes. A site with new files but an unfinished database upgrade can remain broken even when the file copy was correct.

5. Recover from a fatal error or white screen

Use Recovery Mode when WordPress offers it

Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2. When WordPress detects a fatal PHP error during a normal page load, it can email the site administrator a special Recovery Mode link. WordPress.org describes it as a built-in feature that may restore access without FTP or direct code editing. The administrator session pauses the suspected plugin or theme, while ordinary visitors are not given that administrative bypass.

  1. Open the Recovery Mode link from the administrator email before it expires.
  2. Read the dashboard notice identifying the plugin, theme, or PHP component associated with the fatal error.
  3. Deactivate the named component, update it to a compatible version, or contact its developer. Do not delete it until you have a backup and a replacement plan.
  4. Exit Recovery Mode and test both the public site and the dashboard in a fresh session.
  5. Reactivate the component only after its compatibility issue is addressed, and test again immediately.

If no Recovery Mode email arrives

Check the administrator mailbox, spam folder, and the address configured for the site. If no message is available, use FTP or the host file manager to isolate a plugin or theme according to WordPress’s documented troubleshooting method, or ask the host to inspect PHP error logs. Renaming one suspected plugin directory temporarily can isolate it, but record the original name so you can restore it; changing many directories at once destroys useful evidence.

A white screen can also result from memory exhaustion, an execution-time limit, incompatible PHP, or incomplete core files. If disabling a component does not change the error, stop making speculative edits and move to the server-conditions or restore sections.

6. Check server conditions before retrying

Some update failures are outside the WordPress dashboard. The practical checks are:

  • Outbound connectivity: the server must reach the update service to download a package. A firewall, DNS failure, proxy, or transient connection problem can interrupt this step.
  • File ownership and permissions: the PHP process must be able to write the directories and files that an update replaces.
  • PHP memory: an update or a plugin loaded afterward may exceed the memory available to PHP, producing a fatal error rather than a clean update result.
  • Maximum execution time: a slow download, extraction, or database upgrade can exceed the server’s time limit and leave an incomplete operation.
  • PHP compatibility: the WordPress release or an active plugin/theme may not support the PHP version configured by the host. Conversely, changing PHP before a rollback can make an otherwise restorable backup fail to load.

Ask the hosting provider to confirm the effective PHP version, memory limit, execution-time limit, web-server error log, and ownership of the WordPress root. These values can differ from what a local configuration file appears to specify. A qualified developer can safely adjust them when your hosting plan does not expose the controls.

7. Restore a known-good backup when repair is riskier than rollback

Restoration is appropriate when core files are inconsistent, the database upgrade failed, the site remains unavailable after isolation, or the update introduced errors that cannot be diagnosed safely. Restore both the database and the site files from the same known-good point; mixing a newer database with older files, or the reverse, can create additional incompatibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Put the site in a maintenance state through the host’s supported method, or restrict access while the restore runs.
  2. Confirm which backup contains the last working files and database, and note any content added after that point.
  3. Restore the files and database using the host or backup system’s documented procedure.
  4. If PHP was changed after the backup was made, ask the host to return to the PHP version that supported that backup before testing. The official troubleshooting guidance notes that a PHP change may need to be reversed for the restored site to work.
  5. Test login, the dashboard, several public URLs, forms, media, and any important integrations.
  6. Only after the restored site is stable should you plan another update on staging or during a monitored maintenance window.

Do not overwrite a working restored copy with the failed installation while investigating. Preserve the failed files and logs if a developer or host needs them to identify the cause.

8. Know when to stop and call the host or a developer

Professional help is the safer choice when any of these conditions apply:

  • You cannot access the WordPress root or do not know which installation the domain uses.
  • You are unsure which account owns the files or how to change permissions without exposing the site.
  • The host controls PHP version, memory, execution time, firewall, or outbound connections.
  • The database upgrade reports an error, times out, or leaves the dashboard inaccessible.
  • A restore has not been tested, or the site contains critical transactions that cannot be lost.
  • The error continues after Recovery Mode isolates the named component.

Give the helper the exact WordPress and PHP versions, the time of the failed update, the visible message, the steps already taken, and confirmation of the backup location. That prevents repeated destructive experiments and lets the host correlate your report with server logs.

9. Prevent the next failed update

  • Maintain scheduled WordPress backups that include both files and the database, and periodically test a restore.
  • Keep plugins and themes updated through a controlled process rather than changing many components simultaneously.
  • Use a staging copy to test major WordPress, PHP, theme, or plugin changes before applying them to the live site.
  • Keep custom functionality in plugins or a child theme instead of editing distributed core files; core updates replace those files.
  • Know how to reach FTP, the host file manager, and your host’s restore controls before an emergency.
  • When enabling plugin or theme auto-updates, retain a rollback path and monitor the site afterward. Automatic updates are convenient only when a restorable backup exists.

Official guidance in context

WordPress.org’s Updating WordPress documentation states, “You should always update WordPress to the latest version.” That advice assumes you can recover safely if an update fails, which is why the backup and restore checks belong before the retry. Its Recovery Mode documentation identifies the feature as built in from version 5.2 and intended to help regain access after a fatal error without requiring FTP or direct code editing in some cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply refresh the maintenance page?

No. A refresh may work if the update is still running, but a message that remains after the process has stopped usually indicates a stale .maintenance marker. Check the WordPress root through FTP, a file manager, or shell access and remove that marker only after making a backup.

Will deleting .maintenance undo a failed update?

No. It only clears the flag that tells WordPress to display the scheduled-maintenance response. Partial core files, a failed database upgrade, permissions, and PHP errors require their own fixes or a restore.

What if the dashboard says the update succeeded but asks me to update again?

Open /wp-admin and look for a database-upgrade prompt. If upgrade.php is requested, complete it before activating plugins or attempting another update. If the prompt repeats, stop and have the host or a developer inspect the database and file versions.

Should I restore files without restoring the database?

Normally restore the matching database and files from the same known-good point. Restoring only one can leave schema, options, plugins, or core files out of sync.
