Microsoft’s current Windows Update error table does not define 0x800745D. Check the characters on screen before changing anything. A Microsoft Q&A report from 2015 titled 0x800745D actually quotes the message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0x8007045D)”. Those are different codes: 0x8007045D points toward an input/output problem with storage or another device, while a genuine Windows Update failure should be handled with Microsoft’s normal update-repair sequence.
Use the manual steps below in order. They start with backup and the built-in troubleshooter, then move through prerequisites, hardware isolation, cache reset, servicing repair and, if necessary, a package installed from Microsoft Update Catalog. If the message turns out to be 0x8007045D during a backup or other storage operation, follow the separate hardware checks rather than treating it as an ordinary update-cache error.

First, verify the error code and the operation that failed
Windows error strings are easy to misread, especially when a zero, the letter O, or a group of similar digits is displayed in a small dialog. Microsoft’s current Windows Update documentation lists codes including 0x8007000D, 0x800705B4, 0x80240034, 0x800F0922, 0x80070057, 0x80080005, 0xC1900101, 0x80248014, 0x80070005 and 0x80070002, but not 0x800745D. That absence does not prove that your computer is safe or unsafe; it means there is no Microsoft-published, code-specific Windows Update procedure for that exact spelling.

| What you see | Most useful interpretation | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update repeatedly fails and the code is exactly 0x800745D | The code is not defined in Microsoft’s current Windows Update table, so treat it as an unconfirmed transcription until you verify it. | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and complete the standard repair sequence. |
| The message says “I/O device error” and the digits are 0x8007045D | This is a different code associated with an input/output problem. A drive, cable, port, enclosure or removable media can be involved. | Identify the storage device and disconnect nonessential hardware before retrying; use the storage-focused checks below if the error is outside Windows Update. |
| The failure occurs in Backup, setup media creation or another storage operation | The operation context makes an I/O diagnosis more plausible than an update-cache diagnosis. | Protect the data first, then test the device, connection and media rather than repeatedly clearing Windows Update files. |
The 2015 Microsoft Q&A report is evidence of a likely visual-reading or transcription error, not a Microsoft definition of 0x800745D. Do not assume that a page or utility using the 0x800745D label has established the cause of your failure.
Prepare safely before repairing Windows Update
Back up important files
Copy documents, photographs, project files and other irreplaceable data to a separate location before making servicing or storage changes. Microsoft recommends a backup before troubleshooting. If the error appeared while reading or writing a particular drive, make that drive the priority: repeated retries can worsen a failing connection or media problem.
Confirm the Windows edition and architecture
Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version and System type (32-bit or 64-bit). You will need those details if you later download a package from Microsoft Update Catalog. A package for the wrong release or architecture can fail to install even when its KB number looks correct.

- Use a stable internet connection and keep the computer connected to power during the update.
- Open the clock settings and confirm the date, time and time zone are correct.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Check free space on the Windows drive. Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance calls for at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit system or 20 GB on a 64-bit system. A particular update can require a different amount, so leave additional working room when possible.
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any repair the troubleshooter offers and allow it to finish.
- Restart the computer, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft also provides an automated Windows Update troubleshooter through its Get Help application. If the Settings troubleshooter is unavailable, use the Get Help route and follow its on-screen prompts.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Accept a suggested repair, restart, and check for updates again.
The troubleshooter can correct common configuration and service conditions, but it cannot establish that the unlisted 0x800745D label is genuine. If the same message returns, continue with the prerequisite and cache steps rather than repeating the troubleshooter indefinitely.
Remove interference from external hardware
Shut down or restart only after saving work, then disconnect nonessential USB storage, card readers, docks, printers and other peripherals. Microsoft includes hardware isolation in its update guidance because setup can fail when a device or its driver interrupts access to files. Leave the keyboard, mouse and display connected, reconnect one device at a time after the update succeeds, and retry Windows Update.
If disconnecting a particular external drive makes the update work, the drive or its connection is relevant evidence. Do not format it or erase its contents as a first response. If the original error was the separate 0x8007045D in a backup or media operation, keep the data backed up and test that device through a different known-good port or connection before attempting the operation again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete download can make the update service retry the same package. Microsoft’s supported manual reset is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, and start the service again. Do not delete the folder itself.

services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop. Leave the window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the contents of that folder and delete them. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped; do not force-delete a locked file.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows, reconnect only essential hardware, and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
This removes cached update files, not your personal documents. Windows can download a fresh copy after the service starts. If the error appears before any download begins, cache reset alone is unlikely to identify the cause, so proceed to servicing repair.
Repair the Windows component store and protected files
Use an elevated Command Prompt for the servicing commands. This sequence follows Microsoft’s documented repair order: run DISM, restart, install an applicable servicing stack update when one is offered, check and repair file corruption, then retry the update.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window because the percentage can pause for an extended period.
- Restart Windows even if DISM reports that no corruption was found.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run the System File Checker command:
sfc /scannow - Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Restart if Windows reports that repairs were made, then try Windows Update again.
If Microsoft offers a servicing stack update that applies to your exact Windows release, install it before repeating the corruption check. Servicing stack packages are version-specific; identify the release and architecture in Settings > System > About rather than selecting a similarly named package at random.

Install the affected update manually
When Windows Update itself cannot complete a particular package, the KB number can reveal whether the package is available separately. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record the failed update’s KB identifier, if one is shown.
- Open Microsoft Update Catalog in a browser and search for the exact KB number.
- Compare the result’s product, Windows version, release or build, architecture and package type with the information on your computer.
- Download the matching package. If several entries have the same KB, do not choose solely by file size; select the entry that matches your edition and architecture.
- Close applications, run the downloaded package, and follow the installer prompts.
- Restart when requested, open Settings > Windows Update, and check for updates again.
A manually installed package does not correct an unrelated I/O problem. If the catalog installer reports that the update is not applicable, recheck the Windows build, architecture, language and prerequisite packages before trying another download.

0x8007045D is distinct from 0x800745D and is associated with an I/O device error. The Microsoft Q&A example was a backup problem, not a documented Windows Update definition. Use the operation that failed to narrow the hardware path:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- For an external drive, disconnect it, reconnect it directly to the computer rather than through a dock or hub, and retry with another port.
- For removable media, remove and reinsert the media carefully and test whether another operation can read it. Stop if files become inaccessible and preserve any remaining data first.
- For an enclosure or adapter, test the same drive with a different compatible connection. A change in behavior identifies the connection as a suspect, but it does not by itself prove the drive is healthy.
- For a backup, verify that the destination is present and writable and that the source files can be read before starting another full run.
Do not use a Windows Update cache reset as a substitute for these checks. If 0x8007045D appears only when a specific device is attached, the device path deserves attention even if a separate update also happens to be pending.

Account for the Windows 10 support change
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. Windows 10 PCs continue to operate, but the end of that support changes what a “missing update” means. Identify the Windows version before assuming that a current update should be offered or that an unavailable package indicates a repairable cache failure.
On a supported Windows release, continue through the troubleshooter, prerequisite checks, cache reset, servicing repair and manual KB installation as appropriate. On an unsupported Windows 10 installation, distinguish an actual installation failure from the absence of a newly released update; those outcomes require different decisions.
When to stop and get more specific evidence
Stop repeating the same repair when one of these conditions applies:
- The displayed code remains ambiguous or changes between 0x800745D and 0x8007045D. Capture the exact text and the application or setup screen that produced it.
- A particular external drive or port triggers the I/O message. Protect the data and investigate that connection before deleting files or reformatting media.
- DISM or SFC reports repairs but the same update fails with a specific KB. Record the KB, Windows build, architecture and the complete installer message.
- The update is for Windows 10 after the October 14, 2025 support cutoff. Confirm whether the package should still be available for your support arrangement before treating its absence as corruption.
The practical decision is therefore straightforward: verify the characters and context first, use Microsoft’s least-invasive Windows Update path for a genuine update failure, and reserve storage-focused troubleshooting for the separately documented 0x8007045D I/O condition.
