First identify your exact TCL NXTPAPER model and software version: display controls and menu names can differ between phones. Then compare brightness, adaptive brightness, color settings, and NXTPAPER modes one at a time. If the screen still looks wrong, use TCL support for that specific model rather than assuming the phone has a widespread defect.
1. Confirm the model and software version
Check the model name in your phone’s Settings, usually under About phone, and note its software version. TCL provides separate support pages and manuals for different models, so do not assume a menu path documented for one NXTPAPER phone applies to another. Start with the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G support page or the TCL NXTPAPER 60 Ultra support page if you have one of those models.

2. Check brightness controls
On the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G, TCL’s manual documents manual brightness and a control to adjust brightness automatically. Open Settings > Display, then check the brightness slider and adaptive brightness. Raise the slider to a comfortable level and, if adaptive brightness is enabled, compare the screen with it temporarily off. Automatic adjustment can change perceived brightness as lighting around you changes.

3. Compare color and comfort settings
Look for Eye comfort mode, color temperature, dark theme, and any darker display mode available on your phone. Change one control at a time and compare the same screen content. Eye comfort mode may make colors appear warmer or less vivid because TCL describes it as adjusting color temperature. On the 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G, TCL says: “Eye comfort mode can effectively reduce blue light radiation and adjust the color temperature to relieve eye fatigue.” Turn it off briefly to see whether the appearance changes; this is a comparison, not proof that the setting caused the issue.
4. Compare NXTPAPER modes
If your phone offers selectable NXTPAPER modes, switch to another available mode and view identical content at the same brightness. The 50 XE manual describes NXTPAPER zone as reducing glare and reflections and allowing a preferred mode. Mode names and options are model-specific, so consult the manual for your device rather than following an assumed universal path.

5. Check lighting and viewing angle
Assess the screen indoors or out of direct light, and tilt it to change the viewing angle. In its review of the NXTPAPER 60 Ultra, Android Central noted that direct sunlight shining straight onto the matte display can obstruct visibility. That observation concerns the review unit and model; it is a reason to check lighting and angle before treating the symptom as a fault.

If brightness, color, mode, and viewing-condition comparisons do not help, consult the official support page and troubleshooting materials for your exact model. A Reddit post from September 2026 about one NXTPAPER 60 Ultra with a persistently dark display suggests checking Extra dim and Eye comfort mode, but that is anecdotal advice, not verified TCL guidance. Prioritize the phone’s own settings and TCL support. The available information does not establish a universal NXTPAPER hardware fault or a symptom-specific repair.
