Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The exact message, when it appears, and whether the computer can reach BIOS or Windows determine the right repair. “CPU Over Temperature,” a system that powers on with no display, random freezes, WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, and Windows startup failures each require a different path.
Before changing parts, write down the complete error text, note whether it appears before Windows loads or only during demanding work, and record your CPU and motherboard models. Also note whether the PC is self-built or from an OEM and whether you recently changed the cooler, BIOS, RAM, power supply, or overclock settings.

These details answer the first practical questions: Is this a firmware or hardware problem, or does Windows simply have damaged startup files? Can the machine complete POST (power-on self-test)? Does the fault follow heat or workload? A precise timeline prevents replacing a processor when the real cause is a loose cooler, bad memory seating, a power issue, or boot-code corruption.
First, identify which CPU-error branch you have
| Symptom and timing | Most useful first path | What it usually rules in or out |
|---|---|---|
| “CPU Over Temperature” at startup, or shutdown during a workload | Power down, inspect cooling hardware, airflow, thermal interface material (TIM), and BIOS settings. | Points toward heat transfer, fan or pump operation, airflow, ambient conditions, or an overclock; it is not proof that the CPU silicon has failed. |
| Fans spin but there is no display, or the PC never completes POST | Use motherboard indicators, memory checks, the exact board manual, and the system maker’s diagnostics. | Usually occurs before Windows loads, so Windows repair commands are irrelevant until POST succeeds. |
Windows blue-screens with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR |
Restore BIOS defaults and test hardware domains including memory, storage, power, and drivers. | Windows reports a hardware-related stop condition, but the code does not identify one failed part. |
| The PC freezes, throttles, or shuts off while busy | Check heat and power first, then BIOS configuration and possible Windows corruption. | A workload relationship suggests thermal protection or power delivery, although operating-system corruption can also contribute. |
| POST succeeds but Windows will not start | Use Windows Recovery and Startup Repair; use BOOTREC only for the boot-code problems it addresses. | The processor can initialize the platform, making startup-file or storage checks more appropriate than cooler replacement. |
If you smell burning or chemicals, see swelling or deformation, or the machine remains too hot to touch after shutdown, turn it off, disconnect AC power, and stop using it. Do not open a swollen-battery laptop; contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.

Questions to answer before touching hardware
- What is the complete message, including any hexadecimal code or diagnostic number?
- Does it appear immediately at power-on, after BIOS, while Windows loads, or only during gaming, compiling, rendering, or another sustained task?
- Can you enter BIOS/UEFI, and does the machine remain stable there?
- What are the exact CPU, motherboard, laptop or desktop model, and BIOS version?
- Is the computer self-built or an Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, or other OEM system?
- Did the fault begin after a cooler, RAM, storage, power, BIOS, driver, or overclocking change?
Record answers and diagnostic codes. A technician can use that timeline to distinguish a thermal, firmware, power, hardware, driver, or Windows problem.
Fix “CPU Over Temperature”
This warning means the firmware is detecting a thermal condition serious enough to protect the processor. Thermal protection can throttle performance or shut the system down. Intel identifies blocked vents, failed or obstructed fans, an unsuitable cooler, degraded TIM, a liquid-cooling pump failure or leak, high ambient temperature, and BIOS overclocking as common causes. Do not assume a universal “safe” temperature: use the processor and system maker’s specifications.
1. Cool the computer and inspect the obvious
- Shut down normally if possible. If it is already shutting off, hold the power button only long enough to turn it off.
- Disconnect AC power and let the system cool. Do not repeatedly restart a machine that immediately reports an extreme temperature.
- Check that intake and exhaust vents are not against a wall, carpet, or fabric. Remove accumulated dust from vents and fan openings with the system powered off.
- Listen for the CPU fan. In a liquid cooler, verify that the pump is powered and that there is no visible leak. A silent, stalled, or intermittently stopping fan or pump needs service or replacement matched to the system.
- Check whether the warning occurs at idle or only under a sustained load. An immediate warning at idle points more strongly to mounting, pump or fan failure, or a firmware reading problem than to ordinary workload heat.
2. Verify cooler compatibility and mounting
The cooler must support the CPU socket and its thermal design requirements. Intel’s guidance is to “ensure that the CPU thermal solution used is compatible and correct for the specific CPU.” A heatsink that is loose, mounted with the wrong bracket, or missing a required backplate cannot transfer heat reliably.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- With power disconnected, confirm that every mounting screw or push-pin is engaged evenly and that the heatsink does not rock.
- If you remove the heatsink, clean old compound from both contact surfaces with an appropriate electronics-safe cleaner and allow them to dry.
- Apply the correct amount of CPU thermal paste (thermal interface material) for the cooler and CPU, then remount the heatsink evenly. Intel specifically advises applying the right amount of TIM; excessive or insufficient compound can both impair contact.
- Reconnect the CPU-fan or pump lead to the motherboard header required by the manual. Some boards will trigger a fan error if the cooler is connected to the wrong header.
- Inspect for a forgotten protective film on a new cooler, an uneven mounting bracket, or a cable caught in a fan. Correct those installation errors before testing.
CPU thermal paste is useful only when inspection confirms a TIM or cooler-contact problem. It is not a general remedy for no-display failures, WHEA errors, or Windows startup corruption.
3. Undo settings that can raise heat
- Enter BIOS/UEFI during startup using the key shown by the motherboard or OEM splash screen.
- Disable manual overclocking, enhanced turbo settings, undervolting experiments, and other custom voltage or frequency profiles.
- Choose the board’s “Load BIOS Defaults,” “Load Optimized Defaults,” or equivalent option, save, and reboot. Intel lists loading BIOS defaults or updating BIOS as a resolution step.
- If the problem began after a BIOS change, use the board’s documented recovery or clear-CMOS procedure. Follow the exact manual; do not short pins or remove a battery while AC power is connected.
- Check the motherboard manufacturer’s support page for a BIOS version that specifically supports your CPU. Use the documented update method and do not interrupt power during flashing.
4. Check the environment and workload
Move a desktop away from enclosed cabinets and verify that all case fans have a clear path through the chassis. On a laptop, use a hard, flat surface rather than bedding. If the temperature warning returns after the cooler is correctly mounted, fans run, vents are clear, and BIOS defaults are loaded, stop stressing the system and arrange model-specific service. A cooler, fan, pump, or power-supply replacement cannot be selected safely without the exact CPU, socket, case, and motherboard information.
When the PC will not boot or show a display
A no-display failure often occurs before Windows exists, so Windows repair commands will not solve it. The relevant stage is POST (power-on self-test). A machine that reaches a logo or BIOS is a different case from one that has no power at all; note which stage you see.
Self-built Intel desktop
- Turn the system off, disconnect AC power, and read the motherboard manual for diagnostic LEDs, a two-digit POST display, or beep codes.
- Confirm the 24-pin motherboard power connector, CPU power connector, and graphics-card power leads are fully seated.
- Reseat the RAM and test one module at a time in the slot the manual specifies. A poorly seated or incompatible module can stop POST.
- Check that the display cable is connected to the active graphics output. If the CPU has no integrated graphics, the motherboard video ports will not produce an image.
- Remove recently added hardware and revert recent BIOS, RAM, cooler, or overclock changes. Clear CMOS only according to the board manual.
- Use Intel’s no-boot/no-display troubleshooting wizard for self-built Intel desktop systems, then follow the diagnostic result rather than replacing parts at random.
Change one item at a time and record whether the indicator code, fan behavior, or display changes. Randomly swapping a CPU, board, RAM, and power supply destroys the evidence needed to identify the fault.

OEM desktop or laptop
For Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other OEM systems, use the manufacturer’s support workflow for the exact model or service tag. Run the built-in preboot diagnostic when available and record its code. OEM procedures can include model-specific key combinations, memory access restrictions, and warranty requirements.
If there is no power at all, test the wall outlet and AC adapter where applicable, but do not open a laptop with a swollen or damaged battery. If the system powers on and immediately powers off, return to the thermal and power checks instead of assuming the processor itself is defective.
Repair WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
Intel describes this stop error as meaning that a hardware issue has occurred. The fault domain can include the CPU, RAM, storage, power supply, a driver, or an incorrect voltage; the text alone does not identify which component failed. The timing matters: an error after a new memory profile or BIOS change calls for defaults first, while one tied to disk activity also warrants storage diagnostics.
Start with stable firmware settings
- Enter BIOS/UEFI and load the default settings. Remove CPU, memory, and voltage overclocks.
- Save and test whether the blue screen returns under the same workload.
- If the error began after a BIOS update or hardware installation, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback or compatibility guidance.
Isolate the hardware domains
- Cooling and CPU: Check cooler mounting, fan or pump operation, and temperature behavior under load.
- Memory: Test modules individually in the recommended slot and run the memory diagnostic supplied by the motherboard or operating system.
- Storage: Check drive health with the drive or OEM diagnostic and verify data and power connections.
- Power: Confirm the power supply has the capacity and connectors required by the CPU and graphics hardware. Intermittent resets under load can indicate a power problem.
- Drivers: If Windows stays up long enough, install current drivers from the PC or component manufacturer and remove recently added drivers that coincide with the crashes.
Keep a record of the stop-code timing, workload, BIOS version, and any diagnostic result. Repeated WHEA failures after defaults and component tests justify professional or OEM service rather than continued stress testing.

Stop random freezes, throttling, and shutdowns
Overheating can cause throttling, a thermal-control halt, or shutdown. Intel also lists power faults and operating-system corruption as possible contributors.
Check heat and power first
- Look for a rising fan speed, severe slowdown, or shutdown only during gaming, compiling, rendering, or another sustained workload.
- Inspect vents, fans, cooler mounting, TIM condition, and liquid-cooler pump operation as described in the overheating section.
- Return BIOS settings to defaults and remove overclocking. If the issue started after a hardware change, test with the change reversed.
- Verify the PSU, AC adapter, and motherboard power connectors for the exact system. Do not substitute a generic unit without checking electrical and physical compatibility.
Clear CMOS only when appropriate
A clear-CMOS procedure can remove an unstable firmware profile, but it also resets custom settings such as boot mode, fan curves, and memory profiles. Shut down and disconnect power, then use the motherboard’s documented jumper, button, or battery procedure. Re-enter required settings afterward and test at defaults before enabling performance profiles.
Check Windows system files when hardware looks stable
If the machine remains cool, passes hardware checks, and freezes in Windows, use an elevated Command Prompt to run:

Restart after the commands complete. These tools address Windows component and system-file corruption; they do not repair a failing CPU, cooler, RAM module, storage device, or power supply. If freezes continue before Windows or inside BIOS, return to POST, cooling, and power diagnostics instead of repeating file repair.
Repair Windows startup corruption
If the computer completes POST and reaches Windows Recovery but cannot boot the operating system, use the recovery tools rather than treating it as a processor fault.
Run Startup Repair
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment. If Windows cannot start normally, interrupt startup as directed by the PC maker until recovery appears, or boot from Windows installation or recovery media.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the affected Windows installation and allow the diagnostic to finish. Its log is stored at
%windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt.
Use BOOTREC for its specific scope
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, Microsoft documents these boot-code commands:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT
/FIXMBR writes boot code compatible with Windows, while /FIXBOOT writes a new boot sector. FixMbr may not correct partition-table corruption, and neither command repairs a failing drive or general hardware instability. Confirm the correct Windows and system partitions before using additional recovery commands, especially on systems using UEFI and GPT.
If recovery tools fail
Back up accessible files before reinstalling or resetting Windows. A reset or clean installation can remove applications and data, so use the OEM’s recovery instructions and verify backups first. If storage diagnostics report errors, replace or service the drive before reinstalling.

On a Dell laptop or desktop, run the preboot fan diagnostic from the manufacturer’s diagnostic menu and record any code. In Windows, use Task Manager to identify processes creating sustained CPU load and review unnecessary startup applications. Check the system’s thermal settings and Intel power-management components as Dell directs. If diagnostics fail, use the service-tag support workflow and provide the recorded code. Turn the computer off, disconnect AC power, and stop using it if the chassis, keyboard, or trackpad is swollen or deformed, there is a burning or chemical smell, or it remains too hot to touch after shutdown.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The machine repeatedly shuts down at idle or immediately after startup despite a correctly mounted, compatible cooler.
- You find a liquid-cooling leak, damaged fan, burned connector, swollen battery, or chemical odor.
- POST diagnostics identify a board, memory, CPU, or power fault that requires model-specific parts.
- WHEA errors continue with BIOS defaults and isolated hardware tests.
- The system is under warranty or opening it could violate the OEM’s service terms.
At that point, provide the technician with the exact error, timing, model numbers, BIOS version, recent changes, diagnostic codes, and the steps already completed. This prevents unnecessary part swapping and helps distinguish a thermal, firmware, power, hardware, or Windows problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix a CPU error?
Identify the exact message and timing first. Use the overheating path for a CPU Over Temperature warning, POST and OEM diagnostics for no display, BIOS defaults and component isolation for WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, and Windows Recovery for startup corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does my PC say CPU Over Temperature?
Common causes include an incompatible or loose cooler, failed fan or liquid-cooler pump, blocked vents, degraded thermal interface material, high ambient temperature, or BIOS overclocking. Power down, let the system cool, inspect those items, and load BIOS defaults.
Why will my computer not boot after a CPU error?
Determine whether it completes POST. If there is no display or no POST, check motherboard indicators, power connectors, and RAM placement using the board manual. If POST succeeds but Windows fails, use Startup Repair and the documented recovery tools.
What does WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR mean?
Intel describes it as a hardware-related issue. Possible domains include the CPU, RAM, storage, power supply, drivers, or voltage. Restore BIOS defaults, isolate components, and run the appropriate diagnostics rather than replacing one part blindly.
Can thermal paste fix every CPU error?
No. CPU thermal paste is relevant only when degraded TIM or poor cooler contact is contributing to overheating. It will not repair a no-boot condition, WHEA stop error, failing power supply, or Windows startup files.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I clear CMOS when the computer freezes?
Only when an unstable firmware profile is plausible and the motherboard manual documents the procedure. Clearing CMOS resets boot mode, fan curves, memory profiles, and other settings; disconnect power and test at defaults afterward.
What do BOOTREC /FIXMBR and /FIXBOOT repair?
They repair specific Windows boot code. /FIXMBR writes compatible master boot code and /FIXBOOT writes a new boot sector. /FIXMBR may not correct partition-table corruption, and neither command fixes failing hardware.
When should I stop using the computer?
Stop immediately for swelling or deformation, a burning or chemical smell, a liquid-cooling leak, extreme heat that persists after shutdown, or repeated shutdowns despite correct cooling. Disconnect AC power and contact the OEM or a qualified service provider.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal CPU-error fix. Match the repair to the symptom and stage: correct cooling and BIOS settings for overheating, POST and manufacturer diagnostics for no display, hardware isolation for WHEA, and Windows Recovery for startup corruption. Use exact model information, avoid random part swaps, and stop when heat, odor, swelling, or repeated hardware faults make continued testing unsafe.
