A cordless drill that will not hold a charge has one of two problems: it may not be charging at all, or it may charge but run for only a short time. Check the outlet, charger connections, battery seating, contacts, temperature and model-specific indicator before buying parts. If the pack remains unusable, has visible damage or will not recover after those checks, stop using it and arrange manufacturer service or a model-compatible replacement.
Battery and charger platforms are not universal. Use only the pack and charger supplied with, or expressly recommended for, your drill model. A battery that fits physically can still be electrically incompatible.

First identify the symptom
“Won’t hold a charge” is often used for two different faults. The distinction determines what to test.

Indicator lights are not standardized. A flashing, solid or alternating light can mean different things on different chargers, so use the manual for the exact drill and charger. How to troubleshoot the drill and battery
1. Verify the electrical supply
- Unplug the charger and check that the wall outlet powers another device you know works.
- Reconnect the charger firmly at the outlet and at any detachable cable or power connection.
- Look for a charger indicator before inserting the battery, if the charger design provides one.
- If the outlet is switched, controlled by a tripped breaker or protected by a resettable safety outlet, restore power and test again.
Do not assume the battery is faulty until the charger is receiving power. If the charger has a damaged cord, cracked housing, scorch marks or a loose connection, discontinue use and ask the manufacturer about a replacement charger or service.
2. Remove the battery and inspect accessible contacts
Disconnect the battery from the drill before inspecting it. Check the exposed terminals on the pack and the matching contacts in the charger or tool for dust, metal debris, corrosion, bent parts or obvious physical damage. Clean only what is safely accessible, using the method permitted by your manufacturer; do not scrape, bend or probe contacts with metal objects.
A pack that cannot slide fully into the charger, or that will not latch, may not be making the electrical connection required to begin charging. Never force it into place. Yard Force’s battery-check instructions specifically include checking fit and contact condition (manufacturer guidance).

- Align the rails, slots or posts exactly as shown in the drill manual.
- Push the pack in until the release tabs or latch engage. A click alone is not proof that the contacts are aligned, so check that the pack cannot slide back out without pressing the release.
- When charging, confirm the charger’s status changes in the way specified for that model.
- If the pack is loose, stops short or needs pressure to remain connected, remove it and arrange service rather than wedging it in place.
Different battery platforms use different mechanical keys and communication contacts. A pack that appears to fit can still be wrong for the charger.
4. Let a hot pack cool before charging
Lithium-ion chargers can inhibit charging immediately after demanding use. BLACK+DECKER explains that a recently used lithium battery may be blocked by hot-pack protection until its temperature falls (BLACK+DECKER support, published September 22, 2022).
- Remove the pack from the drill and charger.
- Place it in a dry, ventilated location away from direct sun, heaters and flammable materials.
- Wait until it is no longer noticeably warm, then retry the normal charging procedure.
Do not cool a battery with water, a freezer or compressed air. The hot-pack behavior and the permitted operating range are model-specific; the cited guidance does not establish one universal waiting time or temperature.
5. Consider cold conditions
Low ambient temperature can reduce lithium-ion battery activity. Xiaomi notes this effect for its Mijia Brushless Cordless Drill 2 (model FAQ). Bring the pack to the temperature range specified in your manual before charging or testing it. Do not heat it with a flame, heat gun, radiator or other concentrated source.

Read the drill and charger manuals, not a generic chart found for another platform. Note whether the indicator shows power, charging, completion, temperature protection or a fault. If the manual says a particular pattern means a service condition, follow that instruction. Without the model number, it is not possible to interpret a light pattern reliably.

Record what happens with the battery removed and inserted: whether any light appears, whether it changes after several minutes and whether the pack becomes unusually hot or emits an odor. Unusual heat, smell, smoke or noise is a reason to unplug the charger and stop using the pack.
7. Isolate the battery only with a known-compatible pack
If you have access to another battery, use it only when the drill and charger manufacturer identifies it as compatible with that exact platform. Do not substitute a pack solely because its voltage, shape or connector looks similar. Health Canada recommends obtaining replacement power-tool batteries from the original manufacturer or retailer and warns that lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire or explode under hazardous conditions (Health Canada lithium-ion safety guidance).
- Confirm the test pack’s model or platform in the manufacturer compatibility list.
- Insert it into the same drill and charger using the normal procedure.
- Observe whether the charger reaches its normal completion indication and whether the drill operates normally.
- Remove the test pack and label the result; do not leave an unfamiliar pack charging unattended.
If the known-compatible pack works while the original does not, the original battery becomes the leading suspect. That is useful evidence for a service request, not a license to open the pack or rebuild its cells.
8. Separate a short-runtime problem from a charging failure
When the charger reports a completed charge but the drill quickly loses power, check how the drill is being used before condemning the battery. Large bits, seized fasteners, continuous drilling and heavy materials draw more current than light intermittent work. If the same task used to run normally and now stops quickly with a fully charged pack, capacity loss is more likely than a simple seating problem.
Test the drill briefly with the suspected pack and, if available, a known-compatible pack under the same conditions. Compare only packs intended for the same tool platform; do not infer capacity from color, shape or a voltage number alone.
Additional checks that prevent a wrong diagnosis
Look at the whole charging chain
The battery is only one part of the system. A failed outlet, cable, charger, tool-side contact or battery-management circuit can produce similar symptoms. Write down which combinations you tested: original battery with original charger, another approved battery with that charger, and the drill with a known-good pack. This simple record keeps you from repeatedly testing the same component and gives the service department useful evidence.
If the charger works with a compatible second pack, that comparison makes the original pack more suspect. If no compatible pack charges and the charger shows no normal power indication, the charger or supply deserves attention first. These comparisons are clues, not definitive electrical tests; only the manufacturer or an authorized technician can confirm an internal failure.

Voltage identifies only one part of compatibility. A platform can also depend on the connector shape, keyed rails, communication contacts and protection electronics. Capacity and runtime are related, but a higher-capacity pack is not automatically approved for every charger in a brand family. Verify the exact platform, model and charger pairing in the maker’s compatibility information before purchasing.

Gather details before contacting support
Have the drill model, battery part number, charger part number, nominal voltage shown on each label, purchase date if known and your test results ready. Describe whether the pack was hot or cold, whether any indicator appeared, how long it ran after a full indication and whether another approved pack worked. Photos of labels and visible damage can help support staff identify the correct service route, but do not send or transport a swollen, leaking or otherwise hazardous pack without following the manufacturer’s instructions.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop immediately if the battery case is cracked, swollen, leaking, punctured, badly dented, burned or unusually hot. Also stop if you notice smoke, hissing, a strong chemical odor or visible melting. Place the tool in a safe location away from combustible materials only if you can do so without handling a hazardous pack; otherwise leave it undisturbed and follow local emergency guidance.
Do not open the housing, bypass its protection electronics, connect cells directly, or follow generic cell-rebuild instructions. DEWALT’s battery-safety guidance directs users to service centers for packs that no longer hold a charge and says not to attempt battery repair or service (DEWALT battery safety). The same principle applies to any lithium-ion drill pack.

Deciding between service and replacement
Use manufacturer service when
- The battery or charger is under warranty or a service plan.
- The pack shows a fault indication after the basic checks.
- A compatible test pack works, but the original will not charge or has very short runtime.
- The charger, drill or battery has physical damage that needs professional evaluation.
Have the model number, voltage or platform name, purchase information and the observed indicator behavior ready when you contact support. Manufacturer service can determine whether the failed component is the battery, charger or tool.
Buy a replacement battery only after confirming compatibility
A replacement is appropriate when the manufacturer or authorized service channel identifies the original pack as worn out or failed. Match all of the following:
- Drill make and exact model.
- Battery platform or series.
- Voltage and connector/keying specified by the manufacturer.
- Charger compatibility.
- Regional approval, warranty and return terms.
Do not select a battery by voltage alone. Even packs with the same nominal voltage can use different communication contacts, protections and mechanical keys. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information before ordering; the exact drill model is required to choose reliably.
Compare the total cost, not just the pack price
When deciding between repair, a new battery and a new drill, compare the complete cost and practical value. Service may preserve an expensive drill and keep the existing platform useful, while a replacement pack may be simpler when the tool itself is in good condition. Buying a new drill can make more sense when the battery, charger and tool all need replacement or when compatible parts are no longer available. Include any charger required, shipping, warranty coverage, return terms and approved recycling or service fees. There is no reliable universal price comparison without the make, model, region and condition of the tool.
Storage, charging and disposal practices
Store the pack safely
For long-term storage, Health Canada advises keeping lithium-ion batteries at about 50% charge, while also following any model-specific instructions from the drill maker (Health Canada). Store the pack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, water and metal objects that could bridge the terminals. Keep it where children and pets cannot handle it.

Use the specified charger
Charging electronics are matched to a battery’s chemistry, voltage range and protection system. Use the charger supplied with the drill or one expressly recommended for that platform. Do not charge a pack with a universal adapter, improvised leads or a charger intended for another tool family.
Recycle or dispose of a failed pack correctly
Do not put a lithium-ion drill battery in household rubbish or attempt to dismantle it. Ask the original manufacturer, retailer or your municipality for current collection and recycling instructions. Tape or otherwise protect exposed terminals only when the collection program instructs you to do so, and follow its packaging and transport rules.

Why did the battery stop charging immediately after drilling?

No. Voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Chargers can differ in chemistry settings, protection behavior, contacts and communication requirements. Use the supplied charger or one expressly recommended for the exact battery platform.
Can I test the drill with any battery that fits?

What charge level is best for long-term storage?
