A controller.dll message does not identify one universal Windows file. The filename is used by different applications, and the searched Microsoft DLL documentation does not list it as a standard Windows system DLL. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL site. First identify the program and complete error text, then repair Windows files with System File Checker, use DISM if the component store is damaged, repair or reinstall the affected application, and check controller hardware or drivers when a gamepad or other device is involved.
What “controller.dll is missing” actually means
Windows displays a DLL error when an application cannot load a required library. The message may say “controller.dll is missing,” “controller.dll was not found,” or “The program can’t start because controller.dll is missing from your computer.” Those messages describe a loading failure, not the owner or purpose of the file.

controller.dll is an ambiguous filename. It is not established as a standard protected Windows DLL, so there is no safe, universal Microsoft download that fits every occurrence. One program may ship a private library with that name; another may expect a component installed by a game launcher, device utility, or other publisher. The complete dialog, the application that shows it, the executable path, your Windows build, and whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit are needed before selecting a replacement.

If the message appears at the same time as a gamepad or another external controller problem, treat the device connection and driver as a separate possible cause.

Is controller.dll safe?
A filename alone cannot prove that a DLL is safe or malicious. A legitimate application can contain a file with this name, while a tampered file could use the same name. Avoid downloading a standalone copy from an unknown site and placing it in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. That can install an incompatible or modified library and create a new security or stability problem.
Use files supplied by Windows, the application’s publisher, its official launcher, or the device manufacturer. If you already downloaded an unverified DLL, delete it, run a scan with your installed security software, and reinstall the affected application from its official source rather than registering that file manually.
Identify the owner before changing anything
- Copy the complete message. Note the exact wording, error code if shown, and the time it appears.
- Record the application. Is the dialog shown by a game, a controller utility, a creative application, Windows at startup, or several programs?
- Check the path. Some dialogs identify the executable or the location where Windows tried to load the DLL. A path inside an application’s installation folder points toward that publisher; a system-wide failure needs Windows repair first.
- Record system details. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, build, and system type. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may require different binaries.
If only one program fails while Windows and other applications work, an application installation problem is more likely than a missing Windows component. If many unrelated programs fail, or Windows reports other protected-file errors, start with system repair.

Prepare for repair
- Save open work and close the affected application.
- Create a restore point where your edition of Windows provides System Protection: search for Create a restore point, open it, select the system drive, choose Configure if protection is off, then choose Create.
- Back up important files before servicing the operating system or uninstalling software.
- Connect the computer to reliable power. DISM can take time and should not be interrupted.
- If the error started immediately after an update, driver installation, or application change, record that event; it helps you choose a rollback or reinstall later.
Run System File Checker first
Microsoft Support’s first-line procedure for corrupted or missing protected system files is System File Checker (SFC). It checks Windows-protected files and replaces damaged copies from the local component store when possible.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - At the elevated prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow- Press Enter and let the verification reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Read the final message. If Windows repaired files, restart and test the application again. If Windows says it found no integrity violations, the missing DLL is probably owned by the application rather than protected Windows files.
- If Windows says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, continue with DISM below before running SFC again.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer to “complete” the repair. SFC must use a matching Windows component source; a file from a different build or architecture can be incompatible.
Use DISM when SFC cannot repair files
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on. Microsoft Learn specifies the sequence of servicing the online image with DISM, running SFC again, and restarting.

- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- Wait for DISM to finish. It may pause at a percentage for several minutes while it examines or restores components.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow- Restart Windows, then launch the program that displayed the error.
Microsoft’s documented wording is: “In an elevated Command Prompt window, run these commands:” followed by the DISM and SFC commands for component-store corruption. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, note the exact error and Windows build rather than obtaining a random DLL. A matching Windows installation source or vendor support may be required for that condition.
Repair or reinstall the affected application
When the error is limited to one program, use that publisher’s own repair path. Microsoft installation troubleshooting guidance includes repairing or reinstalling the affected program, checking services, and using a clean boot when background software interferes.
Use a built-in repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows editions).
- Select the affected application, choose Advanced options if offered, and select Repair. This normally preserves user data.
- Launch the application. If the error remains, use Reset only after checking what data the application will remove.
Repair through the installer or launcher
Some desktop programs provide Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair in their official installer or launcher. Use that option while the program is closed. It should restore the publisher’s own files without mixing binaries from another version.

Reinstall from an official source
- Back up application settings, saved games, templates, or other data according to the publisher’s instructions.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or the publisher’s uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the publisher, an official launcher, or the Microsoft Store listing that owns the application. Match the installer to your Windows architecture and edition.
- Install, update, and test before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
If an update introduced the error, check whether the publisher provides a rollback or a known-issue notice. Do not copy controller.dll from an older installation unless the publisher specifically instructs you to do so.
Check a controller, USB device, or its driver
If the dialog appears while a gamepad, steering wheel, audio controller, USB accessory, or similar device is failing, the DLL message may be a symptom of a device utility or driver problem rather than a Windows-file problem.

- Disconnect and reconnect the device firmly.
- Try a different USB port, preferably a port directly on the computer rather than a hub.
- Remove an unpowered hub and test with the device connected directly.
- For a wireless controller, replace or recharge the battery, check the wireless receiver, and pair the device again.
- Test another known-good cable when the device uses a detachable cable.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category that matches the hardware, such as Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Bluetooth.
- Look for a warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that disappears when unplugged.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab. On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version.
- Install the current driver supplied by the device manufacturer. Avoid driver packages from unofficial download sites.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available, restart, and retest.
Microsoft’s device troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking power, cables, USB ports, hubs, wireless connections, and manufacturer drivers. A driver update will not repair an unrelated application DLL, so keep the hardware and software investigations separate.

Use a clean boot when another service blocks the program
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of services and startup programs. It can show whether security software, overlays, controller utilities, or other background software is preventing the application from loading its own DLL.
- Press
Win + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Do not disable Microsoft services before selecting the hide option.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and test the affected program.
- If the error disappears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting each time, until you identify the conflict.
- Return to
msconfig, choose Normal startup, and restore your normal startup configuration after testing.
Clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting. Keep a record of anything you disable so you can restore it safely.
Check logs and gather evidence if the error continues
When SFC, DISM, and an official application reinstall do not resolve the message, collect details before contacting the application publisher or device maker.

- The application name, version, installation path, and whether the failure occurs at launch or during a particular action.
- Windows edition, version, build, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The controller or device model, connection type, driver provider, and driver version.
- The time of the failure and any recent update, installation, or hardware change.
- Relevant entries in Event Viewer: right-click Start, open Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the failure time.
Send those details through the publisher’s official support channel. The owner can then provide the correct build of its DLL or a supported installer; a generic controller.dll download cannot make that determination.

Mistakes to avoid
- Do not register a random DLL.
regsvr32is not a general fix for a missing application library, and many DLLs are not meant to be registered. - Do not download a file solely because its name matches. Version, architecture, dependencies, and publisher signature all matter.
- Do not run SFC from a non-administrator window. It needs an elevated Command Prompt to repair protected files.
- Do not interrupt DISM or SFC. Let each command finish and restart when instructed.
- Do not assume a controller message always means a controller driver. Confirm whether a physical device fails at the same time and whether the dialog belongs to a particular application.
- Do not delete a DLL from an application folder as a first step. Removing it can turn a recoverable version mismatch into a complete reinstall.

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop experimenting with replacement DLLs when the file owner is unknown, when the application’s official installer is unavailable, or when Windows continues to show new integrity errors after DISM and SFC. At that point, the exact error text, application path, Windows build, architecture, device model, and logs are more valuable than another download. Give those details to the publisher or hardware manufacturer so they can identify the correct component and supported recovery method.
