Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA computer that becomes slow without warning is usually reacting to a measurable change: a process is using too much CPU, memory or disk time; a startup app added background work; storage is nearly full; an update changed a driver; malware is active; or the hardware is beginning to fail. Start with reversible checks before buying parts or reinstalling the operating system.
Record when the slowdown appears, restart once, identify the resource under strain, then work through updates, malware scanning, storage and hardware diagnostics. The sequence below covers Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 as well as current macOS releases; menu names can differ slightly by release.

1. Describe the slowdown before changing anything
Write down what “slow” means on your machine. The pattern often points to the right test.
- Slow immediately after sign-in: startup programs, sync tools, updates or a damaged user profile are more likely than a failing processor.
- Slow only in one application: update that application, check its own workload and compare with another app before changing system settings.
- Slow during file copies or saves: inspect disk activity, free space and drive-health warnings.
- Slow on battery but not on AC power: power or thermal management may be limiting performance.
- Slow after an hour of use: sustained CPU load, overheating, memory pressure or a background scan may be involved.
- Freezes, fan noise, unusual clicking, blue screens or error messages: preserve data and treat the symptom as possible hardware or driver trouble.
Note whether a restart restores normal speed temporarily, which applications were open, and whether the slowdown began after an update, new peripheral, software installation or change in available storage. Do not delete files or disable services until you have recorded this baseline.

2. Restart, then identify the resource being exhausted
A restart clears a stuck process and lets you distinguish a one-time condition from a repeatable problem. Save work, restart normally, wait for the desktop to finish loading, and reproduce the slowdown with only the necessary application open.
Windows: use Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc(or right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager). - If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On Processes, click the CPU, Memory and Disk headings one at a time to sort from highest to lowest.
- Watch the list while the slowdown occurs. A process that remains unusually high, rather than a brief spike, is the useful clue.
- Close the responsible application normally, or update it. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes simply because their names look technical; stopping a system process can cause data loss or instability.
Use the Performance tab to see whether CPU, memory or disk activity is saturated overall. A high total with no obvious process can indicate a driver, security scan, storage fault or thermal problem, so move to the relevant diagnostic section instead of repeatedly killing processes.
macOS: check Activity Monitor
- Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
- Review the CPU, Memory and Disk tabs while reproducing the problem.
- Sort by the relevant column and quit an application you recognize from its own menu. Use Quit first; use Force Quit only when the app will not respond.
On the Memory tab, pay attention to Memory Pressure, not merely the amount of free memory. Pressure that turns yellow or red while one app is active suggests that app needs more memory than is available or has a runaway workload.
3. Reduce Windows startup and background load
Applications configured to launch at sign-in can lengthen startup and continue using CPU, memory or disk resources. Disable only nonessential third-party items so you can reverse the change if a needed function disappears.

- In Windows 11 or 10, open Settings > Apps > Startup. In Windows 8 or 7, open Task Manager > Startup (or Startup in System Configuration on older editions).
- Sort by startup impact where that column is available.
- Turn off items you do not need immediately after sign-in, such as an optional updater or launcher. Leave security software, touchpad utilities and hardware controls enabled unless you know their function.
- Restart and compare the same task. Re-enable an item if a required feature or synchronization service stops working.
Do not use third-party “optimizer” settings to disable random services. A clean boot or selective startup is appropriate for advanced troubleshooting, but document every change so you can restore normal startup afterward.
4. Install pending updates, and investigate a slowdown that follows one
Outdated software and drivers can contain performance defects, while a new update can also expose a compatibility problem. Check the operating system before replacing hardware.
Windows
- Open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10) and install pending updates.
- Restart when requested, then test the same workload.
- Open Advanced options and review optional driver updates when Microsoft offers them. Install only updates that match your hardware and keep the current driver details.
If the slowdown began immediately after an update, record the update date and symptoms. Check the computer or component maker’s current advisory before uninstalling or rolling back anything; removing a security or stability update without evidence can create a larger problem.

5. Scan for malware before assuming hardware failure
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so unexplained utilization deserves a security check even when no pop-up or obvious symptom appears.
- Restart Windows and avoid launching unnecessary applications.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Install available security-intelligence updates, then run a Quick scan. If the symptom persists or the result warrants it, choose a Full scan and allow it to finish.
- Follow Microsoft’s malware-removal and recovery guidance if a detection cannot be removed. Preserve important backups and avoid opening suspicious files while investigating.
A clean scan does not prove that a disk or driver is healthy, but it removes one major source of unexplained resource use. Do not run several real-time security products simultaneously; they can compete for the same resources and make diagnosis harder.
6. Check free storage and clean it carefully
A nearly full startup drive leaves less working space for updates, temporary files and application caches. Inspect what occupies the drive before deleting anything.
Windows storage checks
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review the category breakdown.
- Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files after reading each category. Do not select a category whose contents you still need.
- Uninstall applications you no longer use from Settings > Apps, and empty the Recycle Bin only after checking it.
- Move large videos, photos, installers and project archives to another disk, then verify the copies before deleting the originals.
macOS storage checks
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage (or About This Mac > Storage on older versions).
- Review recommendations and categories. Remove applications, downloads and duplicate files only after confirming they are not needed.
- Keep adequate working space on the startup disk and restart after substantial cleanup so the system can recalculate storage use.
Apple’s guidance is to move files to another disk or an external storage device, then delete files no longer needed on the startup disk. An external SSD for moving large files can provide workspace when the internal drive is crowded. It does not repair a failing internal disk, remove malware or guarantee a speed increase; keep a second backup of irreplaceable data.

7. Check macOS memory pressure and disk health
Memory pressure
Apple identifies an application that needs more memory than is available as a possible slowdown cause. In Activity Monitor, close or update the application that drives Memory Pressure upward, reduce browser tabs or projects, and test again. If pressure remains high during ordinary work, record the model’s installed memory and consider a compatible upgrade only after checking whether that model permits one.
Disk Utility
- Back up important files before attempting repairs.
- Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices, select the startup volume, and run First Aid. Work from the volume to the container and physical device if Disk Utility reports a problem.
- Restart and test. Repeated errors, disappearing volumes or clicking noises require professional diagnosis rather than repeated repair attempts.
8. Distinguish a software bottleneck from failing hardware
Escalate when the same symptom survives a restart, update, malware scan and storage review.
- Persistent high disk activity with errors: back up immediately and run the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics. A failing drive can worsen quickly.
- Consistently inadequate memory: confirm the exact model, maximum supported capacity and module type before buying RAM.
- Overheating, sudden shutdowns or loud fans: stop heavy workloads, keep vents clear and use the manufacturer’s diagnostics. Do not open a machine under warranty unless the maker permits it.
- No identifiable process but system-wide sluggishness: test in a clean user account or safe mode where available. If the problem remains, hardware, firmware or a low-level driver becomes more likely.
- Old hardware that no longer meets current software requirements: Microsoft notes that software changes may not produce a significant improvement; a compatible upgrade or replacement can be the long-term answer.
Back up documents before any internal SSD or RAM replacement. Confirm the interface, physical size, capacity limits, firmware requirements and warranty implications for the exact model. A component that fits physically may still be unsupported.

Quick Recap
9. Compare remedies by evidence, reversibility and risk
| Remedy | Best evidence | Reversibility | Typical cost and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and resource inspection | A repeatable slowdown with a visible CPU, memory or disk consumer | Fully reversible | No cost; low risk if unfamiliar processes are left alone |
| Disable nonessential startup apps | Slow sign-in or high background use after boot | Easy to reverse | No cost; low risk when only optional third-party items are changed |
| Operating-system and application updates | Pending updates or a known software defect | Usually reversible through documented recovery options | No direct cost; interruption and compatibility risk |
| Defender malware scan | Unexplained CPU or disk use, suspicious behavior or a detection | Scan is non-destructive; removal may quarantine files | No added cost with built-in protection; preserve backups if malware is found |
| Storage cleanup or file relocation | Low free space or oversized categories | Partly reversible; deleted files may not be recoverable | No cost for cleanup; external storage adds hardware cost and backup responsibility |
| Disk Utility First Aid or maker diagnostics | Disk errors, missing volumes or hardware warnings | Diagnostic; repairs can alter file-system structures | Usually included; back up first |
| Internal SSD or RAM replacement | Confirmed failing storage or insufficient memory | Hardware-dependent | Parts and labor cost; compatibility, data-loss and warranty risks |
10. Common mistakes that make a sudden slowdown worse
- Deleting system folders: remove only items identified by Storage settings or Disk Cleanup.
- Ending every high-CPU process: first identify the application and save work; system processes may be essential.
- Installing several cleanup or security utilities: overlapping background scans can increase load and obscure the original cause.
- Rolling back an update immediately: document the timing and check current advisories before removing a security or driver update.
- Buying an SSD because the computer is slow: verify that storage capacity, drive health or memory is actually the bottleneck.
- Continuing to use a drive that reports errors: copy critical files first and minimize writes until diagnostics are complete.
- Assuming a clean scan proves the hardware is fine: malware and hardware failures are separate possibilities.
11. A practical decision path
- Record the symptom and whether restarting changes it.
- Use Task Manager or Activity Monitor to identify CPU, memory or disk pressure.
- If one known application dominates, close, update or reinstall that application after backing up its data.
- If the problem starts at sign-in, disable one nonessential startup item at a time and retest.
- Install pending operating-system and application updates; investigate any slowdown that began immediately afterward.
- Run the built-in malware scan when utilization is unexplained.
- Review free storage, clean temporary data cautiously and move large files to verified external storage when appropriate.
- On macOS, check Memory Pressure and run Disk Utility First Aid after making a backup.
- If errors, overheating, inadequate memory or persistent slowness remain, run manufacturer diagnostics and arrange compatible repair or upgrade.
As an optional shortcut after these built-in checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and show an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a subscription, results vary, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection—no tool repairs every crash.
