How to Fix a Computer Running Slow: Windows and Mac Troubleshooting

A slow computer is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First note when the slowdown appears (during startup, after sign-in, in one app, or everywhere), then check whether CPU, memory, disk activity, or nearly full storage is the limiting resource. This order prevents you from deleting useful files or changing settings that are unrelated to the cause.

On Windows, work through updates, a malware scan, storage cleanup, unused-app removal, startup-app controls, background-app limits, and a restart. On a Mac, inspect storage and Activity Monitor, quit demanding or incompatible apps, check the disk with Disk Utility, and isolate login items or startup software with Safe Mode. If those steps do not change performance, an aging or non-replaceable drive may be the real limit and backup, recovery, or hardware service becomes the safer next step.

Start by identifying the slowdown pattern

Do not begin by installing a “speed-up” utility. Record what you were doing, how long the problem has existed, and whether the change was sudden or gradual. A sudden change deserves an early malware, startup-change, or disk-health check; a gradual decline on an older computer more often points to storage pressure or hardware that no longer meets current software demands. No single free-space percentage or repair time applies to every model.

Pattern What it suggests First check
Slow before or just after sign-in Too many startup programs, a recent driver or app, or a service conflict Startup-app list; recent installs; clean boot (Windows) or login items and Safe Mode (Mac)
Every app is slow Low free storage, high memory or CPU use, malware, or hardware limits Storage screen and resource monitor for your operating system
Only one app is slow That app may be demanding, incompatible, outdated, or missing its required resources Quit other apps, check the app’s system requirements, and test with a smaller workload
Slow during file copies or other disk-heavy work Very little free space, a saturated or failing drive, or a large background task Storage capacity, disk activity, and backup status
Slow immediately after a change New software, startup entry, update, or driver conflict Undo or isolate the most recent change rather than changing many settings at once

Keep a simple before-and-after note. If a step makes no difference, restore the original setting where possible and continue; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to find.

Windows: a safe troubleshooting sequence

1. Install Windows and optional driver updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  2. Install available updates and restart when Windows requests it.
  3. Open the optional-update area when it is offered and review driver updates that match your hardware. Avoid installing a driver for a device you do not have.

Out-of-date software can leave a computer working harder or create compatibility problems. Test performance after the restart before moving to the next change.

2. Scan for malware with Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run a Quick scan.
  3. If the symptom remains unexplained, use a more complete scan option available on your Windows edition. Allow the scan to finish and follow Windows Security’s removal or quarantine instructions.

Malware can consume processor and disk resources even when no obvious window is open. If a threat cannot be removed, disconnect the computer from sensitive accounts, back up only personal files you have checked, and use Windows recovery guidance or professional help rather than repeatedly deleting random files.

3. Check free space and clean it deliberately

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review which categories are using the drive. If the disk is crowded, turn on or run Storage Sense and inspect its selections before confirming.
  3. On versions that provide it, open Disk Cleanup, select the drive, and review each category. Remove only files you recognize as safe to delete.
  4. Move large personal files that you still need to another internal volume or an external storage device. Do not treat a cleanup list as permission to delete documents, installers, or recovery files blindly.

Storage cleanup is a capacity and reliability step; it is not a guaranteed performance percentage. Leave enough working room for Windows and your applications, but the correct amount depends on the drive and workload.

  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.

4. Uninstall software you no longer use

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording can differ on older Windows releases).
  2. Sort or search for programs you recognize and no longer need, then choose Uninstall.
  3. Restart if an uninstaller requests it. Keep hardware drivers, security software, and programs you cannot identify until you have checked their publisher and purpose.

Removing an unused app can also remove its background service or startup entry. Do not remove an app merely because it appears in a list; verify what it does first.

5. Reduce startup and background activity

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps. Sort by startup impact if that column is available.
  3. Disable only nonessential entries whose purpose you understand. Leave security, touchpad, graphics, audio, backup, and accessibility components enabled unless you know the consequences.
  4. In Settings > Apps, open an app’s advanced options where available and set unnecessary background permissions to a lower level or Never.
  5. Close unused applications and browser tabs, then restart.

Disabling a startup entry does not uninstall its program; it stops automatic launch so you can test whether startup and idle performance improve. Re-enable an item if a feature you need stops working.

6. Use a clean boot when startup conflicts are suspected

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can isolate a conflict systematically. Use it when the slowdown began after installing software or occurs mainly during startup.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account and search Start for System Configuration (also known as msconfig).
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first is important; disabling system services indiscriminately can prevent normal operation.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable the enabled third-party startup entries.
  4. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
  5. If the computer is responsive, re-enable services and startup entries in small groups, restarting between groups, until the slowdown returns. The last group identifies where to investigate.
  6. When testing is complete, return System Configuration to Normal startup and re-enable the entries you need.

7. Escalate through Windows recovery when the system crashes or freezes

If Windows is still slow together with repeated crashes, freezes, disk errors, or failed starts, stop experimenting and protect your data. Back up documents to a separate device if Windows remains stable enough. Windows recovery options include built-in troubleshooters, the Windows Recovery Environment, and reinstall or reset choices; read each option’s data-retention warning before confirming. A USB Windows recovery or installation drive is an escalation tool, not a first-line speed fix.

Mac: check storage, resources, and startup software

1. Inspect and relieve startup-disk pressure

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
  2. Review the categories to find large files, applications, or media libraries.
  3. Delete items you no longer need, or move personal files to another disk or external storage device. Empty the Trash only after checking its contents.

Apple specifically recommends moving files when the startup disk is crowded. Keep irreplaceable data backed up before deleting or moving it.

2. Use Activity Monitor to locate the bottleneck

  1. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
  2. On the CPU tab, look for an app that continually consumes an unusually large share while you are not performing a demanding task.
  3. On the Memory tab, note memory pressure and which apps use the most memory. Close work you can reopen, then retest.
  4. If one app alone is slow, check that app’s system requirements and compatibility with your macOS version before blaming the whole Mac.

Do not force-quit a process you do not recognize simply because it appears in Activity Monitor. Search its name in the app’s documentation or ask an administrator before stopping a system process.

  • Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.

3. Quit unused or incompatible apps

Save your work, quit apps you are not using, and close unnecessary browser tabs. If one application repeatedly hangs or slows the Mac, update it through its normal channel or remove it only after confirming that you have its installer and data backup. A single incompatible app can make the symptom look system-wide while other software remains normal.

4. Verify the disk with Disk Utility

  1. Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
  2. Select the internal startup volume in the sidebar.
  3. Choose First Aid and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Repeat for other relevant volumes if Disk Utility reports a problem, and restart when it recommends doing so.

Back up important files before attempting disk repair. If First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, repeated freezes, or an unmountable volume, treat that as a possible drive failure and seek recovery or service instead of continuing normal use.

5. Isolate login items and extensions

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
  2. Note the current list, then remove or disable nonessential items that launch at login.
  3. Restart and test the Mac.
  4. Add items back one at a time, restarting between additions, until the slowdown returns. The last item added is the one to investigate.

This reversible process is more informative than deleting every login item at once. Keep security, backup, accessibility, and device-management components enabled unless you know their role.

6. Test Safe Mode when startup software is suspected

Safe Mode starts macOS with a restricted set of startup software and performs additional checks. The procedure differs by Mac type:

  • Apple silicon: Shut down. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, select a volume, hold Shift, and choose Continue in Safe Mode.
  • Intel: Shut down or restart, then immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.

If the Mac is substantially faster in Safe Mode, a login item, extension, cache, or other software loaded during normal startup is a stronger suspect. Restart normally and continue the one-at-a-time isolation process. If it is slow even in Safe Mode, storage, disk health, or hardware deserves priority.

When hardware is the durable fix

Microsoft notes that older hardware may not improve significantly from software steps. If the computer has a replaceable internal drive and storage or drive age is the bottleneck, an internal SSD upgrade can be a sensible long-term option. It is not universal: some laptops have soldered storage, proprietary modules, or no practical replacement path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check compatibility before buying an internal SSD

  • Confirm that the model permits drive replacement and that opening it will not violate a service agreement.
  • Match the interface and form factor required by the computer; an incompatible connector will not work even if capacity is sufficient.
  • Choose a capacity that fits the operating system, applications, and personal files you actually keep locally.
  • Plan a complete backup and an operating-system migration or clean installation before removing the old drive.

Do not promise a particular speed gain without the computer’s model, existing drive, memory, processor, and workload. An SSD can remove a storage bottleneck, but it cannot make an underpowered processor or failing motherboard new.

Use external storage when replacement is not practical

An external drive can hold photos, videos, installers, and archives that do not need to remain on the startup disk. Use a reliable cable and keep a second backup for irreplaceable files. External storage increases available capacity; it does not repair a failing internal drive or substitute for a bootable recovery plan.

Signs you should stop troubleshooting yourself

  • Important files are not backed up and the drive is clicking, disconnecting, or reporting repeated errors.
  • Malware returns after removal attempts or security tools cannot complete a scan.
  • Windows cannot start normally, or macOS cannot mount the startup volume.
  • The computer overheats, shuts down, or freezes during otherwise light work.
  • You are considering deleting system folders, registry entries, or recovery partitions to gain space.

In these cases, make a backup if it is safe, record the exact error message, and use the platform’s recovery environment or a qualified repair service. Recovery media and reinstall options can erase applications or personal data, so verify the backup and read retention choices before proceeding.

A maintenance routine that prevents repeat slowdowns

  • Install operating-system and application updates during a planned maintenance window.
  • Review startup or login items after installing software and remove entries you do not need.
  • Keep working space available on the startup drive and move large archives elsewhere.
  • Close demanding apps and browser tabs when they are no longer needed.
  • Run the built-in Windows Security scan when behavior changes unexpectedly.
  • Keep at least one current backup that is disconnected or otherwise protected from accidental deletion.
