If FFmpeg cannot reach YouTube from your Indian VPS, first verify the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS, and test outbound TCP port 443 to that exact ingest host. A timeout alone does not prove that Indian VPS providers—or your provider specifically—are blocking YouTube; if the endpoint and encoder are correct but the network test fails, ask the provider to check egress filtering.
Start by verifying the YouTube endpoint
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room for the intended broadcast and copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key. Use the endpoint shown there, not a hostname copied from an example or guessed from another setup. YouTube’s guidance is to use rtmps, not plain rtmp; its API guidance also requires the correct host and path for ingestion and hostname-based server authentication.

- Check that the URL scheme is
rtmps://. - Preserve the exact hostname and path provided by YouTube.
- Keep the stream key intact and private. Do not paste it into a public post or share unredacted logs.
- If you encounter the SSL failure described in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance, specify port
443in the URL and retry.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and advises using its current Live Control Room endpoint: YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder.

FFmpeg can use RTMPS, an RTMP variant that carries the connection over SSL/TLS, but installed binaries can differ in the protocols and libraries they include. Check the specific FFmpeg executable running on the VPS rather than assuming support based on the command name or version alone.

- Run
ffmpeg -protocolson the VPS and inspect the listed protocols for RTMPS support. - Check the installed build’s configuration or package details if the protocol list is unclear.
- If the required support is absent, install or build an FFmpeg version with the necessary protocol support. Opening a firewall port cannot compensate for a binary that lacks RTMPS.
FFmpeg documents RTMPS as an RTMP-over-SSL/TLS variant and describes the protocol and URL structure in its official protocol documentation.
Use a correctly formed FFmpeg output URL
The following is a template showing the output shape, not a tested command. Replace the placeholders with the actual endpoint and key from Live Control Room, and add the input and encoding options appropriate for your video and audio:

ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://<exact-host>:443/<exact-path>/<stream-key>"
Do not copy the angle-bracket placeholders literally. The exact path format comes from YouTube’s current endpoint; preserve it rather than removing or rearranging components. Quoting the URL helps prevent shell interpretation of special characters in a key. Treat the full URL as secret wherever it contains the key.

For encoder settings such as resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the stream you are sending. Choose settings that match the source and your available upstream bandwidth; changing those settings does not resolve a blocked network route.
Test DNS and outbound TCP 443 from the VPS
Once the endpoint and FFmpeg support check out, test from the VPS itself. Resolve the exact ingest hostname and attempt a TCP connection to that host on port 443. Use the hostname supplied by YouTube; the hostname matters for server authentication, so do not substitute an IP address or an assumed alternate host in FFmpeg.

- DNS does not resolve: check the VPS resolver configuration and provider DNS service, then retry resolution for the exact hostname.
- TCP connection to port 443 fails or times out: check the VPS’s own firewall and outbound rules, then ask the VPS provider whether egress to that destination and port is filtered.
- TCP connects but FFmpeg still fails: examine FFmpeg’s detailed error output and compare the URL, TLS handling, and hostname/SNI behavior with YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
A failed connectivity test is a reason to investigate the route; it is not proof of an India-wide block. YouTube’s endpoint guidance establishes the need for the correct ingestion endpoint and port, but it does not identify a particular Indian VPS provider as blocking it. If DNS resolves, the URL and FFmpeg support are correct, and TCP to the exact ingest host on 443 still fails, give your VPS provider the test time, destination hostname, destination port, and sanitized error output. Ask whether outbound connections to that host and port are restricted, and whether the provider can allow an appropriate route. Never include the stream key in a support ticket unless you have securely redacted it.

If you consider moving to another VPS, verify its current outbound RTMPS/TCP 443 policy directly before migrating. Also compare the provider’s support response and bandwidth or usage terms. No provider recommendation follows from the available evidence, and changing hosts cannot be guaranteed to fix a problem whose cause has not been identified.
Test the broadcast before the church service
After the connection works, run a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview, stream health, and audio and video using content representative of the actual service. Leave time before the event to correct configuration or route problems.
