Start by checking whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi, then identify the failure: the network is missing, setup cannot find the Chromecast, the password is rejected, or the Chromecast connects without internet. Each problem points to a different fix. Check your Chromecast model before relying on band or adapter compatibility advice.
First, identify the problem
Use the symptom that best matches what you see. Google separates these issues because a missing network, a discovery failure, and a connection without internet access have different causes.

| What happens | Start with |
|---|---|
| The Wi-Fi name does not appear during setup | Check whether the network is hidden and whether your Chromecast supports that Wi-Fi band. |
| The network appears, but setup will not connect | Check the password, signal, router restrictions, and whether other devices can get online. |
| Google Home cannot find the Chromecast | Check the setup phone’s connection, app permissions, and discovery steps. |
| The Chromecast connects to Wi-Fi but has no internet | Test internet access on another device using the same network; then troubleshoot the router or Chromecast accordingly. |
These symptom branches correspond to Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Try the basic fixes first
Check the Wi-Fi and distance
- Connect a phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi and confirm it can open an internet site. If several devices cannot connect or get online, troubleshoot the router or contact your internet provider before focusing on the Chromecast.
- Bring the Chromecast and the phone or tablet running Google Home close to the router. Google recommends keeping the streaming device within 20 feet of the router, or as close as possible to both the router and setup device.
- If the household network is down, restart the router according to its instructions and check for an internet-provider outage or recent network-setting changes.
Restart the Chromecast and retry setup
- Disconnect the Chromecast’s power cable or adapter from its power source for about one minute, then reconnect it. Pulling the Chromecast out of the TV’s HDMI port alone does not restart it.
- Restart the router using its manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends unplugging the router and reconnecting it after a period.
- Close and reopen Google Home, turn Wi-Fi off and back on on the setup phone, and try again.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. Passwords are case-sensitive.
Google’s connection troubleshooting page covers restarting the device and router, checking signal, and confirming network access.

If the Wi-Fi network is missing
Check for a hidden network
A hidden network name (SSID) will not appear in the ordinary list. In the Google Home setup flow, choose the option to enter the network details manually and provide the exact SSID and password. The option’s wording may vary by app version.
Confirm the Chromecast and phone support the band
Wi-Fi band support depends on the Chromecast generation. Google’s regional Wi-Fi guidance specifies that first-generation Chromecast supports 2.4 GHz only, while second-generation Chromecast supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Do not assume those details apply to every later model: check the instructions for your exact device. For a 5 GHz setup, the phone or tablet used for setup must also support 5 GHz. See Google’s Wi-Fi network requirements by Chromecast model.
If Google Home cannot find the Chromecast
First make sure the setup phone is on a working Wi-Fi network and close enough to the router and Chromecast. Then try these steps:

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]

- Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on in the phone’s settings, then reopen Google Home.
- Force close and reopen Google Home. If discovery still fails, reinstall the app.
- On iPhone or iPad, allow Google Home to use Bluetooth and enable its Local Network access in iOS settings.
- Try setting up the device with another phone or tablet.
- If the network is hidden, enter its SSID manually during setup.
- If available in the setup flow, connect manually to the Chromecast’s setup Wi-Fi network (SSID).
Factory reset is a later option if these discovery steps do not work. Google’s instructions for a Chromecast that cannot be found in Google Home include phone and app checks.
If the password is accepted but the Chromecast will not connect
Check router isolation settings
Access point (AP) isolation, client isolation, and similar guest-network settings can prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from communicating locally. If one of these settings is enabled on the router or Wi-Fi extender, disable it if you control the network, then retry setup. The setting name and location vary by router.
Check for a captive portal
Some public and managed networks require a browser sign-in page, as commonly found in hotels, schools, dormitories, and businesses. Google says its streaming devices do not support networks that require connection through a captive portal. Use a supported private network instead if the network administrator cannot provide a suitable connection. Google lists these restrictions in its Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guidance.

If Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet
Test internet access from another device on the same Wi-Fi. If that device is also offline, restart the router and check for an outage or changed network settings. If other devices work, focus on Chromecast-specific troubleshooting and router settings rather than assuming the internet service is down.
A mobile hotspot can be a limited diagnostic: if the Chromecast connects to it, that suggests the issue may be specific to the home network. It is not a guaranteed fix. Google cautions that hotspot use with smart devices is not fully supported and can depend on carrier, signal strength, interference, and data-plan limits.
Changing a saved Wi-Fi network
Google streaming devices remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. The steps for switching differ by device:
Rank #4
- High performance
- High product for use
- High quality
- Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer: Use the TV’s settings to forget the current network, then connect to the new one.
- Chromecast (3rd generation or older), Chromecast Ultra, or Chromecast Audio: Use Google Home to change the network.
- Older device no longer connected after a network change: Google says a factory reset may be needed before setting it up on the new network.
Follow Google’s steps for changing the Wi-Fi network on a Chromecast or Google TV device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a factory reset is appropriate
Reset only after the simpler network, phone, and discovery checks fail. A factory reset erases the Chromecast’s setup state, so you will need to set it up again in Google Home.

For Chromecast (2nd generation), Chromecast (3rd generation), and Chromecast Ultra, Google’s physical-button procedure is to keep the device powered and hold its reset button until the LED changes from blinking orange to solid white. Newer Chromecast with Google TV models have separate instructions; use Google’s factory-reset instructions for your exact model rather than applying an older device’s steps.

Google says first-generation Chromecast no longer receives software or security updates and is no longer covered by technical support. If you have that model, its available troubleshooting options are therefore limited.
When Ethernet may help
A compatible Ethernet adapter can connect Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast with Google TV directly to a router, avoiding Wi-Fi for the Chromecast’s connection. Adapter type varies by device, so verify compatibility for your exact model before buying or connecting one. You also need a working router with internet access, an Ethernet cable, power, and a mobile device for setup. Google says its Ethernet adapter is designed for Chromecast devices only; it cannot fix a router failure or an internet-service outage. See Google’s Chromecast Ethernet adapter guidance.
When to contact your provider or router maker
If several devices lose Wi-Fi or internet access, or the router remains unreliable after a restart, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer. For a Chromecast-only problem, check the model-specific Google support steps and router settings before considering equipment replacement; a new router is not a routine fix for a single-device setup issue.
