Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by saving your work and restarting the Chromebook, then install any pending ChromeOS update. Next, reduce open tabs and extensions, check free storage, and run the built-in Diagnostics app. These steps address the common causes—unfinished updates, memory pressure, full local storage, and misbehaving software—without erasing your files. Use Safety Reset, Powerwash, or ChromeOS Recovery only when the earlier checks point that way, and back up local files before any destructive reset.
Identify what “slow” means before changing anything
A Chromebook can feel slow in several different ways. A single site may hang while the rest of the system responds normally; every window may pause; tabs may reload themselves; or the device may take a long time to start. The symptom helps determine the safest next step.

| What you notice | Likely area to check first | Low-risk first action |
|---|---|---|
| One page is frozen or unresponsive | That page, its data, or an extension acting on it | Close the page or use the browser’s hard-refresh command, then test another site |
| Tabs repeatedly refresh | Available memory, too many tabs or apps, or an extension | Close unused tabs and windows; inspect activity in Task Manager |
| Downloads, pages, settings, or Android apps fail | Low local storage | Open Storage management and remove only files you have backed up |
| The whole Chromebook freezes | Pending update, overloaded system, software fault, or hardware | Save what you can and restart; continue with updates and diagnostics |
| It remains slow after software checks | Hardware limits, failing components, or an old support state | Run Diagnostics and check the device’s update schedule |
Do not assume that an older Chromebook is defective merely because it feels slow. Google’s help material does not promise a particular speed improvement from any step, and no software setting can turn an underpowered or failing device into a newer model.

- Close pages or apps that still respond.
- Use the system menu to choose Shut down, wait for the Chromebook to turn off, and then press the power button.
- If the interface is completely frozen, hold the power button until the device turns off, then start it again. Unsaved work can be lost, so use this only when normal shutdown is impossible.
- Test the task that was slow before reopening every tab and app. If one page caused the problem, leave it closed or hard-refresh it before continuing.
If the slowdown returns immediately after a restart, do not keep repeating restarts. Move to the update and workload checks below.
2. Install every available ChromeOS update
An unfinished system update can leave background work running or preserve a bug that has already been fixed. Google’s specific first step for a slow Chromebook is to check for and install updates.
- Open the launcher and select Settings.
- Choose About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates.
- If an update is offered, let it download and install while the Chromebook is connected to power and a reliable network.
- Restart when prompted. The update is not fully applied until the required restart completes.
After the restart, test normal browsing before restoring your previous session. If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer and the update controls are locked, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
3. Reduce memory pressure from tabs, apps, windows, and extensions
ChromeOS shares memory among browser tabs, Android or web apps, windows, and extensions. When available memory becomes scarce, Chrome may discard and reload tabs. Repeated refreshing is therefore a useful warning sign, not merely an annoyance.
Close work you are not using
- Close duplicate tabs and pages you opened only temporarily.
- Quit apps running in the background, including Android apps you are no longer using.
- Close extra browser windows. A window hidden behind another still consumes resources.
- Reopen only the tabs required for the current task and check whether responsiveness returns.
Find the process consuming resources
Press Shift + Esc to open ChromeOS’s Task Manager. Review the listed tabs, apps, and extensions and look for an item using an unusually large share of memory or CPU. Select a process only when you recognize it and have saved its work; ending a process closes that tab or app.

- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Test extensions methodically
If the problem began after installing an extension, disable that extension first. You can also disable extensions you do not need, then test the same sites again. Re-enable items one at a time if necessary so the extension associated with the slowdown is identifiable. Do not install a “speed optimizer” extension to compensate; extra extensions add another layer of code and permissions.
Task Manager is a snapshot, not a diagnosis of a failing component. A busy CPU during a video call or a large download can be normal. Use the pattern—what is consuming resources, when it happens, and whether closing that item helps—to decide what to do next.

4. Free space safely with Storage management
Low disk space can interfere with downloading files, loading webpages, changing settings, creating accounts, and running Android apps. Check storage before concluding that the processor or memory is too weak.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System preferences and select Storage management.
- Review the categories for Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and data belonging to other users.
- Remove items you no longer need, or move important files to Google Drive or another verified backup location.
- Clear browsing data or download history only after confirming that you understand what will be removed.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use.
- Remove extra local user accounts only after each account holder has backed up needed files.
The Downloads folder is local storage. A file visible there is not automatically backed up to Google Drive. Open important documents, photos, recordings, or exported projects from their new location after moving them so you know the copy is usable. Never delete a file simply because it appears large or old when you have not confirmed a backup.
Storage cleanup is not a one-time speed guarantee. Keep enough free space for ChromeOS updates, temporary downloads, browser cache, and Android app data. The exact amount needed varies by device and use; Google’s guidance does not establish a universal free-space percentage.

5. Use ChromeOS Diagnostics when the slowdown persists
ChromeOS includes Diagnostics for examining CPU activity, memory, and connectivity. Google documents the feature for ChromeOS version 90 and later.
Open Diagnostics
- Open Settings and choose About ChromeOS, then Diagnostics.
- If you do not see it there, search for Diagnostics from the launcher.
- Review the CPU usage and memory information while the Chromebook is slow.
- Run the available memory test when you can leave the device undisturbed.
- Use the connectivity checks if the apparent slowness is limited to websites, video calls, or downloads.
CPU tests can stress the device and make regular use difficult while they run. Schedule one when you do not need the Chromebook for other work, and close important apps first. A test result is evidence for the next decision, not a promise that replacing one setting will fix performance.
If Diagnostics reports a hardware problem, record the result and the device model before contacting the manufacturer. If it reports no fault but the system remains slow with minimal workload and adequate storage, continue to the support-status and reset decisions rather than repeatedly running the same test.
6. Choose the least destructive reset that matches the problem
ChromeOS offers three different levels of reset. They are not interchangeable, and their effects on local data differ.
| Option | What it changes | Local-data risk | When it fits | Physical item needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safety Reset | Disables extensions, restores certain settings to safe defaults, and deletes cookies and temporary site data | Lower risk; Google says local data and apps, bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are retained | Pop-ups, unwanted settings, or extension-related trouble accompany the slowdown | None |
| Powerwash | Factory-resets the Chromebook and removes local user data, Downloads, settings, and apps | High; back up first | Simpler checks and Safety Reset did not resolve persistent software problems | None, unless you choose a separate backup drive |
| ChromeOS Recovery | Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS | Highest; local files are permanently erased | Serious or persistent operating-system problems, or when Google’s recovery process specifically applies | Supported internet recovery or a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB |
7. Try Safety Reset for extension and settings trouble
Safety Reset is appropriate when the Chromebook still works but unwanted pop-ups, changed settings, or extension behavior suggest that browser configuration is involved. It is less destructive than a factory reset.

- Confirm the reset, then restart or reopen the affected pages as prompted.
- Test browsing before re-enabling extensions. Add back only the extensions you trust and need.
According to Google’s description, Safety Reset retains local data and apps, bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. It is not a substitute for backing up important files, and it will not repair a failing storage device or a processor that cannot keep up with your workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Powerwash only after backing up local files
Powerwash is a factory reset. It erases local user data, including files in Downloads, along with settings and apps. Files stored in Google Drive and on external storage are not erased by Powerwash, but verify that synchronization or copying has completed before proceeding.
Prepare the backup
- Open Downloads and any app-specific local folders.
- Upload needed files to Google Drive or copy them to external storage.
- Open several copied files from the backup location to confirm they are complete.
- Make sure you know the Google Account credentials you will use after the reset.
- If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, contact the administrator before starting; management enrollment may require an administrator’s action.
Start Powerwash
Open Settings, search for Powerwash, and follow the on-screen confirmation. The Chromebook restarts and returns to its setup state. Complete setup, install updates, and test performance before restoring every app, tab, and extension. Restoring a large workload immediately can recreate the original memory or storage pressure.
9. Use ChromeOS Recovery for serious operating-system problems
Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local files. Treat it as an operating-system repair, not a routine speed tweak.
Internet recovery on supported models
Google documents internet recovery for supported newer Chromebook models. Follow the recovery instructions shown for that model, keep the device connected to power and the internet, and allow the reinstall to finish without closing the lid or interrupting power.

USB recovery on other supported cases
When USB recovery is required, use a flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases the drive, so copy anything on it elsewhere first. Prepare the media with Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility on a separate computer, then insert it into the affected Chromebook and follow the recovery-screen instructions.
Because recovery permanently removes local files, confirm your backup before inserting the recovery media. A USB drive is an occasional recovery tool, not a product that makes ordinary Chromebook use faster.
10. Check update-support status and investigate hardware
Google’s current policy says Chromebooks receive up to 10 years of automatic updates, but the final update date is specific to each model. Age alone does not tell you whether a particular device is still supported.

- Open Settings.
- Choose About ChromeOS.
- Open Additional details.
- Review Update schedule and note the listed final update date.
A device near or past its final update date may still start and browse, but it will not receive the same ongoing ChromeOS maintenance as a supported device. Do not infer a performance fix from the 10-year policy; it describes update availability, not speed.
Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when Diagnostics indicates hardware trouble or when the official software steps do not change the behavior. Provide the model, ChromeOS version, update-schedule date, exact symptoms, and any Diagnostics result. The available evidence does not establish replacement-part compatibility or guarantee that a repair will be economical. A manufacturer or qualified technician can determine whether the battery, storage, memory, display, or mainboard needs service.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- One page only: close or hard-refresh it, then test another site.
- Whole system slow after startup: restart, install updates, and reduce tabs, apps, and extensions.
- Tabs reload or apps close: inspect Task Manager, reduce the active workload, and disable unnecessary extensions.
- Downloads or Android apps fail: use Storage management and remove only backed-up data.
- Pop-ups or altered settings: use Safety Reset and test before restoring extensions.
- Still slow with free storage and a small workload: run Diagnostics and check the update schedule.
- Persistent software corruption: back up, then consider Powerwash.
- ChromeOS will not start correctly or ordinary repair fails: use the applicable Recovery method after a final backup.
- Hardware warning or no improvement: contact the manufacturer instead of promising a software cure.
Keep a Chromebook responsive after the repair
- Close tabs, apps, and windows when you finish with them instead of leaving an entire previous session open indefinitely.
- Review extensions periodically and remove those you no longer use.
- Check Storage management before local space becomes critically low.
- Install ChromeOS updates and restart when prompted.
- Keep important local files in Google Drive or another verified backup, especially before resets or recovery.
- When troubleshooting, change one major variable at a time so you can tell which action affected the symptom.
