If your ChatGPT dot will not connect, stops responding, or appears to need charging, start by identifying what you are using. OpenAI’s dot is documented as an always-on software agent inside ChatGPT, with its own cloud computer. OpenAI does not document a battery, charging port, charger, or replaceable battery for the dot. That means a “charging” symptom cannot be fixed with a cable or battery replacement unless you are actually referring to a different manufacturer’s physical device.
For the software dot, the usual causes are a task waiting for your approval or sign-in, a paused task, a disconnected app, an unavailable authorized computer, or a broader ChatGPT/network problem. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the specific task before changing account or network settings.

First, separate a software problem from a charging problem
OpenAI’s Help Center describes the dot as “an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can help you take a project from an idea to work you can use.” It can run ongoing tasks, use connected apps, and work through a cloud computer. The dot is not described as a handheld appliance or accessory that you plug in.

Your own computer is optional. OpenAI’s setup guidance says the dot has its own cloud computer and can work without access to your device. Connecting your computer supplies optional access to local files, tools, or a local browser; it is not the dot’s power source.

If you mean a separate AI toy, speaker, robot, or other physical product, stop before applying these steps. Hardware troubleshooting depends on the maker and exact model. Provide those details before trying a charger, cable, battery replacement, reset pin, or repair procedure. No charging system or serviceable part is established for OpenAI’s software dot.
Use this symptom map before changing anything
| What you see | Most likely failure surface | First check |
|---|---|---|
| A task is waiting, silent, or appears stuck | Pending decision, approval, sign-in, connection request, or paused task | Open that task and inspect its current state |
| The dot cannot use files or tools on your computer | Local-computer authorization or availability | Check the dot profile’s Computers status in the ChatGPT desktop app |
| An app action fails or produces no result | Wrong account, expired connection, or insufficient app permission | Open the app connection and complete any reconnection or approval request |
| ChatGPT itself will not load, connect, or generate a reply | Service incident, browser, network, VPN, extension, or security filter | Check OpenAI Status, then test a clean browser or another network |
| A phone call does not start | Calling-specific failure | Open the dot conversation and use its phone button; continue by text if needed |
| A physical unit will not stay charged | Unidentified third-party hardware | Identify the manufacturer and exact model before hardware advice |
1. Check whether ChatGPT is having a broader outage
Open the OpenAI Status page and look for an active incident affecting ChatGPT, tasks, connected apps, or calls. A green or “operational” status is useful evidence, but status metrics are aggregate: a healthy status page does not prove that every account, feature, region, or individual session is working normally.
If an incident is listed, avoid repeatedly changing permissions or disconnecting apps while the service is being restored. Note the incident start time and retry after the status update indicates recovery. If no incident is listed, continue with the task-level checks; an isolated account or network problem can exist while aggregate service metrics remain normal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Inspect the affected dot task
A dot that looks unresponsive may be waiting for you rather than failing. Open the exact task conversation, not just a new general ChatGPT chat, and look for a request that needs an explicit decision.
Approve or answer a pending request
Check for prompts asking you to approve an action, choose between options, sign in, verify an account, or connect an app. Complete the request only when you recognize the action and its scope. A task cannot continue until a required approval or connection step is resolved.

Resume a paused task
If the task is marked paused, use its resume control. Do not assume that refreshing the browser will resume it; a paused task has a state that must be changed in the task itself.
Check recurring-task details
For recurring work, open the saved task and inspect its schedule and instructions. Confirm that it is enabled and that its timing still matches your expectation. Each task has its own conversation, so put corrections, examples, and missing context in that task’s conversation rather than in an unrelated chat.
Give the task enough context
If a task starts but produces an incomplete result, add the correction and the relevant context in the same task thread. A new conversation may not contain the assumptions, files, or instructions that the ongoing task needs. This is especially important after changing a connected account or a permission.
3. Restore local-computer access only when the task needs it
The dot’s cloud computer is separate from your personal computer. A task that only needs web research or cloud-connected work may not require local access at all. Use these steps when the dot specifically needs a local file, local application, or browser session.
- On the computer you want to authorize, open the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Open the dot profile and find Computers.
- Choose Allow access and confirm the authorization request.
- Leave that computer online and keep the ChatGPT desktop app open while the dot is using it.
- Return to the task conversation and retry the action that needed local access.
Understand an Offline status
An Offline label means the authorized computer is currently unavailable to the dot. It does not by itself mean that permission was revoked. Check that the computer has a working network connection, has not gone to sleep, and still has the ChatGPT desktop app open.

Do not confuse different computer integrations
Connecting a computer to Codex or enabling Work Sync does not grant the dot local-computer access. Those are separate integrations. Authorize the computer from the dot profile’s Computers control when the task requires it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When local access is unnecessary
If the task can use the dot’s cloud computer and connected services, remove the local-computer dependency from your instructions instead of troubleshooting a personal computer that the task does not need. This can eliminate an Offline failure without changing any account permissions.
4. Repair connected-app and website access
Connected apps have their own account, permission, and sign-in states. A dot can be running normally while an app action fails because the connection expired or the app account is not the one you intended to use.
Verify the app connection
- Open the task’s connection or app settings and identify the service it is trying to use.
- Confirm that the supported plugin or app connection is installed.
- Check which account is connected and switch or reconnect if it is the wrong account.
- Review the requested permissions and approve only the access needed for the task.
- Return to the original task and retry the action.
Reading permission may not include permission to modify, create, or send. If a task can view information but cannot update a record or send a message, inspect the app’s write or send permission rather than repeatedly rerunning the task.
Handle an expired connection
If the dot shows a reconnection request, open it and complete the sign-in or authorization flow. Do not dismiss the request and expect the task to reconnect automatically. After reconnecting, retry from the original task conversation so the dot receives the updated connection state.

Sign in in the dot’s browser environment
A cloud-browser sign-in used by the dot is separate from the session in your personal browser. If the task asks for a login, verification code, or other confirmation, complete it in the dot’s requested environment. Being signed in to the same website in your everyday browser does not automatically authenticate the dot’s cloud browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Fix ChatGPT when it will not connect or respond
When the entire ChatGPT interface is slow, fails to load, or cannot produce a response, use general troubleshooting before focusing on the dot. Work through the following sequence and retry after each meaningful change.
Start a clean request
- If the conversation is very long, start a new chat and describe the task briefly. A long thread can become difficult to load or process.
- Refresh the page, or fully restart the ChatGPT app if you are using an app.
- Retry the failed response once the interface is responsive.
Keep the original task conversation available for reference. Starting a new chat is a diagnostic step for ChatGPT responsiveness; it does not replace a recurring dot task or transfer its schedule.
Remove network and browser interference
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Temporarily disable secure-DNS tools, browser extensions, or security filters that inspect or block web traffic.
- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window with extensions disabled.
- Try another supported browser.
- Try another device or network, such as a different Wi-Fi connection or a mobile hotspot.
- Clear the browser’s cache and site data if the problem survives the clean-window test.
Change one variable at a time when possible. If ChatGPT works in a private window but not in the normal profile, an extension, cached site data, or a browser setting is a stronger suspect than the dot task itself.

Use cross-device testing to narrow the cause
A failure on one browser but not another points toward local browser state. A failure on every browser on one network points toward the network, DNS, proxy, or security filtering. A failure across browsers, devices, and networks is more consistent with an account or service problem and is the point at which support evidence becomes valuable.
Best Value

Record useful diagnostic details
Before contacting support, record the UTC or local timestamp of the failure, the affected task, the exact error text, the browser or app version, the device and network used, and which clean-browser or alternate-network tests you completed. This lets support distinguish a task permission issue from a general connection failure without requiring you to repeat every test.
6. If only calling fails
Calling is an optional way to interact with a dot. Open the dot conversation and select its phone button. If the call does not start but the conversation accepts text, continue by typing in that same task. Text interaction can keep the task moving while you investigate the calling-specific problem; do not treat a failed call as proof that the dot or its connected apps are unavailable.
7. What not to do
- Do not buy a charger, cable, power bank, or replacement battery for OpenAI’s software dot.
- Do not assume that an Offline local computer means the dot’s authorization has been permanently revoked.
- Do not reconnect an app to a different account without checking which data and permissions the task requires.
- Do not grant broad write or send permissions when the task only needs to read information.
- Do not delete a recurring task just because one run is paused; inspect its state and schedule first.
- Do not keep retrying during a confirmed service incident; capture the task details and wait for recovery.
When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI Support when the problem persists after checking the task state, confirming required permissions, testing without network filters, and trying another browser, device, or network. Include the timestamp, task name or conversation, exact error, account context that can be shared safely, and the troubleshooting results. If the status page reports an incident, mention its incident identifier or title.
If your symptom is genuinely that a physical product will not stay charged, support for ChatGPT’s software dot cannot identify the hardware. Provide the physical product’s manufacturer and exact model to the appropriate maker or to a technician; without that identity, a charging diagnosis would be guesswork.
A practical order of operations
- Confirm whether you mean OpenAI’s software dot or an unidentified physical product.
- Check OpenAI Status for a current incident.
- Open the affected task and resolve any approval, sign-in, connection request, or paused state.
- Authorize a local computer only if the task needs it, using Computers and Allow access in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Verify connected-app account, plugin, permissions, and reconnection status.
- Refresh or restart ChatGPT, try a new chat, and retry the response.
- Remove VPN, proxy, secure-DNS, extension, and security-filter interference; then test a private window, another browser, device, or network.
- If calling alone fails, use text in the dot conversation.
- Collect timestamps and diagnostics and contact support if the failure remains reproducible across clean environments.
The Bottom Line
OpenAI’s ChatGPT dot is a software agent, not a documented chargeable device. Check the task for approvals or pauses first, then verify local-computer and connected-app permissions, followed by standard ChatGPT and network troubleshooting. If you mean physical hardware, identify its maker and model before attempting any charging repair.
