That distinction separates an unstable stream going into Castr from a playback problem after YouTube receives it. The available guidance does not establish an India-wide Castr or YouTube outage, or identify an Indian ISP as the cause.
Identify which side is buffering
If you are broadcasting, check the Castr preview and input health charts while the issue is happening. If you are watching, ask whether other viewers see the same problem. A collapsing source bitrate or dropped frames points upstream toward the encoder or its connection; a stable source with only some viewers affected points toward playback conditions. This is a way to narrow the cause, not a diagnosis of your particular connection.
- Castr preview or input health is unstable: start with encoder settings, upload stability, local network traffic, and ingest configuration.
- Castr looks stable, but YouTube buffers for everyone: check the stream’s delivery quality and test with representative viewers.
- Only some YouTube viewers buffer: compare their devices, browsers, networks, and playback quality before changing the broadcaster’s setup.
If you are broadcasting through Castr
Check encoder settings and bitrate
Castr’s 2026 troubleshooting guidance recommends H.264/AVC video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and 30 fps as a baseline. It gives 128 Kbps stereo audio as a setting and suggests 60 fps only when the internet connection can sustain the higher video bitrate. These are Castr’s general recommendations; the right values still depend on the destination and selected stream configuration.
For its general bitrate recommendations, Castr gives 3,500–6,500 Kbps for 1080p and 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p. It recommends sustained upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate: its example is a 5,000 Kbps stream needing 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) upload. These are configuration guidelines, not measurements of Indian broadband or mobile networks. If your upload cannot hold the target steadily, reduce the resolution or bitrate and test again rather than relying on a single peak speed result. Castr’s troubleshooting guide explains its recommendations.

YouTube publishes its own encoder recommendations, which vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its current table lists 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30 as minimums, with recommended values of 14 Mbps and 8 Mbps respectively. Those are YouTube ingest settings, not viewer download-speed requirements; use the table for the codec and frame rate you actually select. YouTube also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings rather than mixing its values with Castr’s general guidance.
Test the upload connection
- Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity on the encoder’s network, such as large downloads, cloud syncing, or video calls.
- If the encoder computer is on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet if available. Treat this as a comparison, not a guaranteed fix: the point is to see whether the symptoms change on a wired connection.
- Check upload stability over time and compare it with the stream bitrate. A speed-test peak does not show whether the connection can sustain the stream throughout a broadcast.
- If practical, compare results on another network. Record whether the bitrate drops or frames are lost during the same test.
Castr says Wi-Fi may introduce packet loss and latency spikes. A cable can help isolate a Wi-Fi-related issue for a broadcaster, but it will not address a viewer’s separate YouTube playback problem.

Inspect Castr health and ingest configuration
Watch Castr’s live health charts during a test. Its guidance associates sudden video-bitrate drops with connection problems and dropped frames with strain on the encoder or connection. Check whether a closer available ingest server changes the result. If RTMP is unstable over a long-distance or unreliable link, Castr suggests trying SRT; neither a protocol change nor a closer ingest point guarantees a fix. See Castr’s troubleshooting guidance and Castr’s setup guide.
If the source is stable but YouTube viewers buffer
When Castr’s input appears stable, investigate playback rather than immediately changing the encoder’s network. Castr recommends Adaptive Bitrate (ABR), which provides multiple quality levels, or lowering the source quality or bitrate. Its troubleshooting article gives 720p at 3,000 Kbps as an option for broader reach.

In Castr’s dashboard, enable ABR in the stream configuration and select the available renditions that suit the stream, such as 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 240p. Castr’s setup guide says ABR cannot be changed while the stream is live, so you may need to disable the stream before changing that setting. Test the change before the next broadcast when possible. Castr’s troubleshooting article and setup guide describe the options.
Ask affected viewers to try another supported browser or device and, if practical, another network. Castr’s October 2025 playback guidance recommends minimum download speeds of 3 Mbps for 720p and 7 Mbps for 1080p. It lists 500 Kbps for 240p, 1 Mbps for 360p, 12 Mbps for 1440p, and 22 Mbps for 4K and above. These are Castr playback recommendations, not YouTube-specific guarantees. Castr lists Android 8.0+ and iOS 16+ mobile support and recommends an up-to-date browser. See Castr’s system requirements.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Locate the symptom. Check the Castr preview and input charts, then establish whether all YouTube viewers or only a subset are affected.
- For broadcaster-side problems, verify settings and headroom. Confirm the selected codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and sustained upload capacity. Lower the target if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Isolate the local network. Pause competing traffic and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or, where practical, another network.
- Check ingest and health data. Look for bitrate drops and dropped frames; test a closer available ingest region or SRT if RTMP is unreliable on the route.
- For viewer-side problems, compare playback conditions. Test a different device, browser, or network and consider ABR or a lower source quality if the issue is widespread.
- Preflight with YouTube. Choose settings appropriate to the connection, test with representative audio and motion before going live, and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. YouTube’s guide says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Castr bitrate suddenly falls | Upload connection or route | Check sustained upload, competing traffic, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, and ingest region. |
| Dropped frames in Castr | Encoder or connection strain | Reduce resolution, bitrate, or frame rate; check encoder load and health data. |
| Castr preview is steady, but viewers report buffering | YouTube delivery quality or viewer playback conditions | Compare affected viewers’ devices and networks; consider ABR or lower quality. |
| Only one viewer or network is affected | Viewer-side playback path | Compare another device, supported browser, and network before making broadcaster-wide changes. |
| RTMP is unstable over a long-distance or unreliable link | Ingest transport and route | Try SRT as Castr suggests, then compare health data; it is not a guaranteed remedy. |
When to contact Castr or your ISP
Escalate after you have isolated the issue as far as practical. Share the time of the problem, your location at a broad level, encoder settings, whether the encoder used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, relevant Castr health-chart symptoms, and the results of alternate-network tests. Contact Castr when the evidence points to its ingest or configuration; contact your ISP when the broadcaster’s upload remains unstable across controlled tests on the local network. The available service guidance does not identify a particular Indian ISP, region, or route as the cause of buffering, so avoid assuming that a VPN, DNS change, router replacement, or more expensive plan will solve it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing a live encoder-to-Castr connection: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
