Start with the low-risk sequence that applies to most Steam launch failures: restart the computer and Steam, install operating-system and driver updates, verify the game’s files, and test for software that may be interfering. Then branch according to when the RPG fails and any exact Steam message. Check the game’s own operating-system support and system requirements before spending time on fixes that cannot make unsupported hardware or software compatible.
There is no single guaranteed solution. Steam Support says launch failures can have many causes across unique hardware and software configurations. The steps below narrow the cause without treating an unverified possibility—such as antivirus interference—as the diagnosis.

Identify exactly where the failure occurs
“Won’t launch” can describe several different failures. Note the first point at which something goes wrong, because the appropriate branch depends on it.

Write down whether the game worked previously, what changed immediately before the problem (an update, driver change, new overlay or security-policy change), and whether every launch fails. These details help separate an installation problem from a compatibility or software-conflict problem.

Also note whether Steam remains responsive, whether the process briefly appears in the operating system’s task list, and whether another account or a newly created save behaves differently. These observations do not prove a cause, but they give support a precise failure boundary instead of the vague report that the game “doesn’t work.”
Run the safe first-line sequence
1. Restart the computer and Steam
Exit Steam completely rather than merely closing its window, restart the computer, and open Steam again. Steam’s file-verification instructions begin with this restart because a process, pending update or temporary state can prevent a game from starting. Try the RPG once after the restart before changing additional settings.
If Steam was updating or stuck at “Preparing to Launch,” allow that operation to finish before testing. Record whether the restart changed the symptom; a temporary recovery is still useful evidence if the crash returns.
2. Install operating-system and driver updates
Apply available updates for the operating system you actually use—Windows, Linux or macOS—and update the computer’s hardware drivers as appropriate. Steam’s guidance specifically calls out keeping Windows current and, for Linux, checking graphics drivers. Restart after updates if the operating system requests it, then test the game again.
Do not assume that a card-based game has modest compatibility requirements. Rendering, launcher, audio and anti-cheat components can still depend on a current operating system or graphics stack. Check the driver update through the normal support channel for your hardware, and note the driver version in your troubleshooting log so the developer can distinguish a post-update failure from an older configuration.
3. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the RPG, or open its Library page and select the gear menu.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then start the game again.
Steam says verification can repair missing or damaged content and may take several minutes. Run one verification at a time; do not verify multiple games simultaneously or while the computer is doing other system-intensive work. Avoid interrupting the check, and test the game after it completes rather than assuming the result alone proves the issue is fixed.
A result reporting that one or more files failed verification is not automatically a new failure. Steam notes that many games keep local configuration files that should not be replaced, so those files can be expected to differ. If the process completes but the RPG still fails, continue to the relevant branch rather than repeatedly verifying without changing the conditions.

4. Temporarily test for interfering software
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software that may interfere with the client or game. Treat this as a controlled diagnostic test: close or pause one non-essential utility at a time, try the game, and restore the normal settings afterward. Examples include overlays, capture or monitoring tools, peripheral-control utilities and other programs that inject themselves into a game process.
Do not broadly disable security protections as a first step. If a security product is suspected, use its quarantine or event history and its documented, narrow troubleshooting controls instead of leaving protection off. Change one variable per test; closing every background program at once can hide which one caused the conflict.
Confirm the RPG is supported on this computer
Check the game’s Steam store page
Open the specific game’s Steam store page and compare your computer with the listed minimum and recommended requirements. Confirm that your operating system is among the supported platforms. Requirements are game-specific; the fact that the title is a card-based RPG does not establish Windows, Linux or macOS support.
A computer that is at or near the minimum specification can still have launch or performance problems. Minimum requirements are not a promise that every configuration at that threshold will be stable. Check the processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating-system version and any stated additional component against your machine rather than relying on a general impression of the game’s visual style.

Do this check before buying replacement hardware or reinstalling the game. A file verifier can replace missing content, but it cannot add support for an operating system, graphics feature or other requirement that the developer does not list.
Linux and Steam Play/Proton
On Linux, first check whether the game or the particular downloadable content you are trying to use is available for Linux. If it lacks native Linux support and you are running it through Steam Play/Proton, Steam advises checking the game-specific Steam Play community discussions for reports and suggestions. Proton results can vary by game, release and hardware, so a fix for another RPG is not proof that the same setting applies here.
Record the Proton or Steam Play choice when reporting the problem, along with the Linux distribution and graphics driver. If only downloadable content fails, verify that the base game and that DLC are both listed as available for your platform.

macOS and other platform limits
For macOS, use the store page’s stated support and requirements for the exact release. If the page does not list your operating system, a file check cannot add that support. The same principle applies to any platform mismatch: establish compatibility before troubleshooting a crash inside the game.

Match the fix to the Steam error
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
Steam identifies antivirus quarantine as a common cause of this exact message. Open the antivirus or endpoint-security product’s quarantine and history views and look for the game executable or a related file. Confirm what was quarantined and when; do not assume every detection is a false positive.
If the security product identifies the executable as safe and its documented policy permits it, use a narrow exclusion for the game’s folder rather than a broad system-wide exception. Restart Steam, then run Verify integrity of game files again so a missing file can be restored. If the message remains, contact Steam Support with an uncropped screenshot and the Steam System Report. The screenshot should include the complete error, not just a cropped fragment.
Do not download a replacement executable from an unrelated website. Use Steam’s verification process and the security product’s documented controls, then remove any temporary exclusion that is no longer needed.
“This game is currently unavailable” on Windows
Keep this branch tied to that exact message. Steam’s Windows guidance lists the following checks:
- Restart Steam and try again.
- Update the computer’s drivers.
- Verify the game files through Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Check whether files in the Steam folder have been marked read-only and remove that attribute where appropriate, following the permissions and ownership rules for your Windows account.
- If it is a third-party game, open its installation folder and launch its executable directly as a diagnostic test. Any message shown by the executable can identify a separate launcher, runtime or permission problem.
Launching an executable directly is a test, not a replacement for starting the game through Steam. Return to Steam after recording the additional error so the game’s normal entitlement and launch path are still tested. Do not change folder permissions broadly if you do not understand the account or ownership implications; record the original state and follow Windows’ normal permission controls.
No error message
When Steam simply returns to the Library, complete the restart, update, verification and interference test first. Then recheck platform support and requirements. Record whether the process appears briefly in the operating system’s task list, whether a splash screen is visible, and whether the behavior changes after a clean restart. Those observations are useful to the game developer even when Steam displays nothing.

Use the failure point to choose the next test
It fails before any window appears
- Confirm the operating system is supported on the game’s store page.
- Compare the computer with the listed requirements.
- Verify the installation.
- Look for a named Steam error, especially a missing executable or unavailable-game message.
- Test for one non-essential interfering program at a time.
If an antivirus history shows a quarantined game file, use the missing-executable branch rather than repeatedly reinstalling. If no error appears, capture the timing and whether Steam briefly shows the game as running.

- Game name and Steam app as displayed in your Library
- Operating system and version
- Processor, memory and graphics hardware
- Whether the game previously worked
- The exact Steam error, if any
- Where the failure occurs: before a window, at splash, at menu or during play
- What changed immediately beforehand
- Each test performed and its result
After each meaningful change, launch the game once and record the outcome. Restore any temporarily changed software settings when the test is complete, especially security and privacy controls. Include the date of the last successful launch and the date the failure began if you know them.

Contact the game’s developer for game-specific diagnosis
Steam’s general guidance recommends contacting the game’s developer for in-depth support when the standard steps do not solve the problem. Use the support channel listed on the game’s official Steam page or the developer’s own support page. Include the complete record above, plus an uncropped screenshot of any error and the exact time or action associated with a crash.
Tell support which steps you completed—restart, updates, verification, interference test and any error-specific checks—rather than saying only that the game “doesn’t work.” If the failure began after a game, operating-system, driver or security update, state that change explicitly. Mention the platform and, on Linux, whether the game is native or running through Steam Play/Proton.
Contact Steam Support for Steam-level errors
For “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable),” Steam specifically asks for an uncropped screenshot and a System Report when the quarantine check, restart and file verification do not resolve the problem. Supply the exact message and avoid editing the screenshot in a way that removes the path or surrounding context.
What not to conclude from a failed fix
- A verification result with a few differing files does not by itself prove the installation is broken; local configuration files can legitimately fail the comparison.
- A successful launch after closing another program shows a possible conflict, not that the program is permanently incompatible. Restore settings and isolate the conflict with controlled tests.
- Meeting a minimum requirement does not guarantee stable launching or play.
- A fix reported for another card game, another Proton version or another operating-system release is not a diagnosis for this RPG.
