A Bosch cordless tool that will not charge is usually traceable to one of eight things: no mains power, an incompletely seated battery, dirty contacts, a pack that is too hot or cold, an incompatible battery, a charger error, a failed battery, or a failed charger, cable, or outlet. Work through the checks below in order. They start with safe, reversible causes and end with the point where Bosch says to use authorized service.
Do not bypass the charger, short battery terminals, open the pack, or dismantle the charger. Bosch charger behavior varies by model, so use the indicator meanings for your exact charger; the GAL18V20 examples in this guide are not a universal code for every Bosch platform.

Start with the indicator you see
Disconnect the tool from the battery and observe the charger when it is plugged into a known-working outlet. The light pattern narrows the likely cause, but it does not by itself prove which component has failed.

| No indicator lights | The outlet, mains cable, or charger may be faulty, or the plug may not be fully inserted. | Test another working outlet, seat the plug firmly, and inspect the cable. If the charger still has no power, arrange authorized service. |
| Red indicator flashing | Depending on the model: an internal charger error, incorrect battery insertion, dirty contacts, or a defective battery. | Remove and reseat the pack, dry-clean the contacts, unplug and reconnect the charger once, then stop and seek service if the flashing returns. |
| Red indicator steady | The battery is outside the permitted charging-temperature range. | Let the pack return naturally to 0–45 °C (32–113 °F), then retry. |
| Green indicator steady on a GAL18V20 | The pack may be fully charged, absent, incompatible, or outside the specified temperature range. | Check the manual, verify the pack, allow normal temperature, and test another compatible battery. |
| Green indicator blinking on a GAL18V20 | Fast charging is in progress. | Leave the battery connected until the light becomes steady. The blinking pattern does not provide an exact percentage. |
These meanings come from Bosch charger instructions and the GAL18V20 Owner’s Operating Instructions. A different Bosch charger can use a different pattern, so treat your model’s manual as authoritative.

1. Verify the outlet and charger power
If no light appears, begin at the wall rather than at the battery. A completely dark charger cannot start a charging cycle.
- Unplug the charger from the outlet.
- Plug a known-working device into the same outlet. If that device also fails, reset the circuit breaker or use another outlet.
- Plug the Bosch charger directly into a confirmed working outlet, without an extension lead, adapter, or switched-off power strip for this test.
- Push the mains plug fully into the charger and the wall socket.
- Check the cable for cuts, crushed insulation, loose strain relief, bent pins, burn marks, or a hot smell. Do not use a damaged cable.
- If the charger remains dark on a working outlet, treat the outlet, cable, or charger as the likely fault and contact a Bosch authorized service centre rather than opening the charger.
Bosch documentation identifies a defective outlet, mains cable, or charger as possible reasons for no indicators. Repeated no-power symptoms are not a battery-repair task.
2. Reseat the battery correctly
An almost-seated pack can look attached while its power and communication contacts are not engaged. Bosch lists incorrect insertion as a cause of a battery that does not charge.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Unplug the charger from the outlet before handling the contacts.
- Press the battery release and remove the pack.
- Inspect the rails, retaining tabs, and charger bay for obvious debris or damage.
- Align the battery with the charger’s guide rails and slide it in until it is fully seated and locked. Do not force it at an angle.
- Gently pull back on the pack without pressing the release. It should remain locked in place.
- Reconnect the charger and read the indicator again.
If the pack rocks, will not latch, or has a cracked housing, remove it from service. A damaged battery should not be held in place with tape or modified to make it fit.
3. Clean the contacts without damaging them
Dust, oxidation, or a film on the metal contacts can interrupt the low-voltage connection that tells the charger a battery is present. Clean only with the charger disconnected from mains power.

- Keep liquids, solvents, abrasive paper, metal tools, and compressed-air moisture away from the terminals.
- Do not scrape, bend, bridge, or polish the contacts aggressively.
- Insert and remove the battery several times, as Bosch suggests, to improve contact between clean mating surfaces.
- Reinsert the pack fully, reconnect the charger, and check whether the indicator changes.
Never place a metal object across the positive and negative terminals. Do not connect the battery directly to a power supply or attempt to charge it through the tool.
4. Bring the battery into the charging-temperature range
Bosch charger manuals specify a permitted charging range of 0–45 °C (32–113 °F) for the documented models. A steady red temperature indication means the pack is too cold or too hot for charging at that moment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Remove the battery from the charger.
- If it was just used under load, let it cool at room temperature away from heaters, direct sun, vehicles, and other heat sources.
- If it was stored in a cold shed or vehicle, let it warm naturally indoors in a dry place.
- Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, freezer, hot water, or other forced method to change the temperature.
- Once the pack is within the permitted range, reconnect it and allow the charger to reassess it.
Temperature protection is a normal safety function, not proof that the battery is permanently dead. If the red indication remains after the pack has reached a normal room temperature, continue with the compatibility and known-good-pack checks.
5. Interpret a flashing red charger light
A flashing red light is an error indication on many Bosch chargers, but Bosch assigns several possible causes to it. The correct response is a short, safe reset followed by isolation of the battery and charger.
- Remove the battery and unplug the charger.
- Wait briefly, then reconnect the charger to the working outlet.
- Insert the battery squarely and completely.
- If the contacts are dirty, perform the dry-cleaning procedure above.
- Observe the light. If the red flashing returns immediately or returns repeatedly, stop cycling the pack and arrange Bosch authorized service.
Do not keep reconnecting a charger that repeatedly reports an internal error. A recurring code can indicate an electronic fault that cannot be corrected by a user reset.

6. Confirm the battery and charger share the same Bosch platform
Bosch sells more than one cordless ecosystem. A battery that slides into a tool or looks similar is not automatically safe or electrically compatible with every Bosch charger.
Professional 18V and POWER FOR ALL are not interchangeable by appearance
When checking a replacement or borrowed pack, identify the platform printed on the battery and the exact charger model. Match the nominal voltage, connector design, and Bosch compatibility list. Do not assume that every “18V” label represents the same battery system.
Use the charger’s genuine-pack list
The GAL18V20 instructions specifically say: “Confirm battery compatibility with charger by checking list of genuine Bosch battery packs outlined on page 5 of this manual.” Use that list for a GAL18V20, and use the equivalent compatibility section for another charger model. A third-party, counterfeit, or pack from another voltage or platform can be rejected by the charger or create a safety risk.
Check the exact model before buying
- Read the full charger model number from its label, not just “Bosch 18V.”
- Read the battery’s platform and part identification from its label.
- Verify that the charger is specified for that battery family and nominal voltage.
- Check regional documentation if the charger was imported; model names and approved packs can differ by market.
7. Test with a known-good compatible battery
The quickest way to separate a battery fault from a charger fault is a controlled swap using a battery that is unquestionably compatible and in working condition.
- Find a known-good Bosch battery from the same platform, nominal voltage, and charger compatibility list.
- Use the same outlet, cable, and charger that failed with the original pack.
- Insert the known-good pack and observe the indicator.
- Then, if appropriate, test the original pack in a known-good compatible Bosch charger.
| Test result | Most likely conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Known-good compatible pack charges normally; original pack does not | The original battery is the likely failed component. | Replace the battery with a compatible Bosch pack or have it assessed through authorized service. |
| Neither compatible pack charges on the same charger | The charger, mains cable, or outlet is more likely at fault. | Repeat the outlet check, then arrange charger service or replacement. |
| Original pack charges in another compatible charger | The original charger or its power path is suspect. | Stop using the suspect charger and have it serviced. |
| Neither pack charges anywhere, or either pack is physically damaged | A battery fault, compatibility problem, or damage remains possible. | Do not open or rebuild the pack; contact Bosch authorized service. |
This test is useful only when the substitute battery is genuinely compatible. A wrong-platform pack can produce a misleading failure indication.

8. Know when a battery should be replaced
Bosch lists a defective battery as a replacement case rather than a user repair. Replace or service the pack when it repeatedly fails in compatible chargers after the seating, contact, temperature, and swap tests have been completed.
Remove a battery from use immediately if it has damage
- Swelling, splitting, melted plastic, or a puncture
- Leaking material, smoke, unusual odor, or excessive heat
- Loose terminals or a housing that will not latch
- Evidence that the pack has been opened, crushed, or exposed to water
Do not put a damaged lithium-ion pack back on the charger to “see if it recovers.” Isolate it in accordance with local battery-recycling or hazardous-waste guidance and ask Bosch or the retailer for the correct regional disposal route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a replacement charger or battery
Do not buy solely from the words “Bosch 18V.” First isolate which component failed, then match the replacement to the platform and exact model.
| Comparison point | Battery decision | Charger decision |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Match Professional 18V or POWER FOR ALL as printed on the pack. | Confirm the charger is approved for that same platform. |
| Nominal voltage | Match the voltage specified by the tool and charger. | Use the voltage and pack list in the charger manual. |
| Model compatibility | Use the charger’s genuine Bosch battery list; exact replacement part is not stated here. | The GAL18V20 is a documented Bosch 18V charger, but compatibility with your pack must be checked. |
| Indicator behavior | Do not infer charge percentage from a light pattern alone. | Use the exact manual; GAL18V20 green blinking indicates fast charging, not a stated percentage. |
| Warranty and region | Coverage and replacement terms depend on the purchase region and are not stated in the charger instructions summarized here. | Use the regional Bosch service channel for warranty or recurring faults. |
| Failure isolation | Buy only after a known-good-pack test points to the original battery. | Replace or service only after a working outlet and compatible-pack test point away from the battery. |
If your model matches the documented unit, the product phrase “Bosch GAL18V20 18V battery charger” identifies the charger family, not a guarantee that it fits every Bosch battery. Confirm the model label and manual before ordering.

When authorized service is the right answer
Stop troubleshooting and use an authorized Bosch service centre when the charger remains dark on a known-good outlet, a red error returns after reseating and cleaning, the cable or housing is damaged, a compatible pack fails in multiple chargers, or you suspect an internal electronic fault. Bosch’s own guidance directs recurring charger faults to authorized service rather than user disassembly.
Have the charger model, battery model, purchase region, outlet test result, and indicator sequence ready. Explain whether a known-good compatible pack changed the result. That information helps the service centre distinguish a battery replacement from a charger or mains fault without unsafe trial-and-error.
Frequently misunderstood indicator behavior
Does a blinking green light mean the battery is almost empty?
On the GAL18V20, Bosch defines green blinking as fast charging in progress. It is not an exact state-of-charge display. Keep the pack connected until the indicator becomes steady, provided the battery and charger are compatible and undamaged.
Can a steady green light mean there is no battery?
On the GAL18V20, Bosch lists a steady green indication for more than one condition, including a fully charged pack, an absent or incompatible pack, or a pack outside the specified temperature range. Check the physical seating, temperature, and compatibility instead of assuming the battery is full.
Why does the same red pattern have different explanations?
Indicator logic is model-specific. Bosch documents flashing red as potentially involving insertion, contacts, a defective battery, or an internal charger error, while steady red is associated with temperature on the documented instructions. The exact charger manual determines which interpretation applies.
Bottom line
Check power first, then seating and dry contacts, temperature, indicator meaning, and platform compatibility. A known-good compatible battery isolates the failed side: if it charges, the original pack is the likely replacement; if it does not, suspect the charger, cable, or outlet. Persistent errors, damaged components, and all internal faults belong with Bosch authorized service.
