Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA blue screen after a Windows 10 update is usually resolved by identifying the STOP code, then reversing the update, driver, or hardware change that triggered it. Photograph the screen first, including the STOP code and any What failed filename. If Windows still starts, remove the matching update or roll back the affected driver. If it does not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to enter Safe Mode, uninstall the latest quality update, or restore the system to a point before the update.
No single command or KB removal fixes every blue-screen error. The correct path depends on the exact code, whether Windows can boot, and whether the failure continues after the recent change is undone.

What a Windows 10 blue screen means
Microsoft calls these failures blue-screen errors, bug checks, STOP-code errors, kernel errors, or BSOD errors. Windows shuts down or restarts when a serious problem could otherwise cause data loss. The screen may show a hexadecimal STOP code and, when available, a What failed module such as a .sys driver file.
Those details are diagnostic clues, not a complete diagnosis. A display driver, storage controller, faulty memory module, damaged Windows component, or incompatible security filter can produce a similar-looking crash. Record the information before restarting because an automatic reboot may erase the message from view.

Capture the evidence
- Use a phone to photograph the full screen.
- Write down the STOP code exactly, including underscores.
- Record the What failed filename if one appears.
- Note the date and time of the first crash, the update date, and any hardware or software installed immediately beforehand.
First checks when Windows still reaches the desktop
- Disconnect recent changes. Unplug newly added USB devices, docks, external drives, and adapters. If you recently installed a graphics card, memory, storage device, security program, tuning utility, or driver, undo that change temporarily. Do not use overclocking or hardware-tuning utilities while diagnosing the crash.
- Check the update history. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Note the KB number and installation date of the newest quality update. Compare it with the time of the first blue screen rather than assuming the newest update is responsible.
- Keep working space available. Windows needs free space to complete servicing, create temporary files, and write crash information. Remove only files you recognize, and do not delete recovery partitions or driver packages blindly.
- Restart once normally. A single restart can finish a pending servicing operation. If the same blue screen returns, stop repeatedly rebooting and continue with the targeted steps below.
How to remove a suspected update from the desktop
Use this option only when the timing and the crash evidence point to a particular update. Removing unrelated updates can reduce security and make the cause harder to isolate.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Choose the newest quality update installed immediately before the crashes began. Confirm the KB number against your notes.
- Allow the uninstall to finish and restart.
- Test the computer with the same workload that previously caused the crash. Record whether the STOP code changes, disappears, or returns.
A feature-update rollback is different from removing a monthly quality update. Use a feature rollback only when the failure followed a major Windows version upgrade and the rollback window is still available. If Windows offers no rollback, do not force one by deleting system folders.
How to roll back or replace a driver
If What failed names a driver, or the crash began after a device-driver change, isolate that driver before changing other components.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the named device, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Give the reason requested by Windows and restart.
- If rollback is unavailable, obtain a current driver from the computer maker or the component maker’s official support page. Match the exact model, Windows 10 edition, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Avoid random driver-download sites.
For a display crash, install the driver supplied for your specific graphics hardware rather than a package intended for a different model. For storage failures, check the motherboard or system manufacturer’s storage-controller and firmware guidance before changing SATA or NVMe settings.
What to do when Windows will not boot or keeps restarting
After several failed starts, Windows normally opens WinRE automatically. If it does not, start from legitimate Windows installation or recovery media and select Repair your computer. The media must match the installed Windows edition and architecture; a recovery USB made for a different edition may not offer the same repair choices.
Do not repeatedly hold the power button while Windows is actively installing an update. Interrupting writes can leave the component store or boot files incomplete. If you must reach WinRE, allow the current attempt to fail naturally first, then use the recovery menu or properly prepared media.
Enter Safe Mode
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is essential.
- In Safe Mode, remove a recently installed driver, security or filter utility, or tuning program. You can also open Device Manager and use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.
- Restart normally and test. If the crash returns only outside Safe Mode, a third-party driver or service is more likely than the basic Windows kernel.
Uninstall updates from WinRE
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Start with Uninstall latest quality update when the blue screen began immediately after monthly servicing.
- Use Uninstall latest feature update only when the problem followed a feature upgrade and Windows still permits that rollback.
- Restart and check whether the original STOP code returns.
WinRE may report that an uninstall is unavailable. Photograph that message and move to System Restore, Safe Mode, or offline servicing. An unavailable option does not prove that the update was removed.

Use System Restore
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Select a restore point dated before the update or driver change.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore.
- Allow the process to complete without powering off the computer.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings while leaving personal files in place. It does not recover documents that were already deleted, and it may not contain a restore point.
Try Startup Repair for boot-file problems
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair when Windows fails before the sign-in screen because of boot configuration or startup-file damage. Startup Repair is not a general driver fix; a defective third-party driver can survive it. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, return to Safe Mode, Uninstall Updates, or System Restore instead of running it repeatedly.
Prepare legitimate recovery media
For a computer that cannot reach the desktop and cannot open WinRE on its own, create a Windows 10 installation or recovery USB on another working PC using official Microsoft media. Select Repair your computer, not a fresh installation, when you need the recovery tools. Verify the correct edition and architecture before creating the USB. A clean installation can remove applications and, depending on the option chosen, personal files, so back up data before using it.

Repair Windows components after you have a stable command environment
Run component repair only after you can keep the computer running in normal mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, or a reliable recovery command environment. Open Command Prompt (Admin) or an elevated Windows Terminal.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies protected system files. - When DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. System File Checker compares protected files with the repaired component store and replaces corrupted copies. - Restart Windows and test again.
If DISM says that source files cannot be found, use matching Windows 10 installation media as the repair source through DISM’s /Source option. The media must match the installed build and edition; do not substitute files copied from another release. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, save the result, complete the DISM step with a correct source, and run SFC again.
Use Driver Verifier only for a stubborn driver case
Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic feature, not a one-click repair. It deliberately applies checks that can trigger additional bug checks so a defective driver becomes identifiable. Use it only after update removal, ordinary driver rollback, Safe Mode isolation, and an official vendor-driver installation have failed.
Before enabling it
- Back up important files and create a restore point if Windows can boot.
- Write down which settings you enable and select a small, targeted set of non-Microsoft drivers instead of verifying everything.
- Have WinRE or Safe Mode available so you can reset Driver Verifier if it causes a boot loop.
If the system cannot start after enabling it, enter Safe Mode or WinRE and reset Driver Verifier from an elevated command prompt before continuing diagnosis. Because it can intentionally produce a stop error, do not enable it on a production system without a recovery path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check hardware when software rollback does not hold
A crash that persists after the suspected update and driver are removed points toward another software component or failing hardware. Run the memory and storage diagnostics supplied by the PC manufacturer. Inspect temperatures, cooling fans, power connections, and removable memory or storage connections. Remove all overclocks and return firmware settings to their stable defaults.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Memory: Test each module using the manufacturer’s diagnostic or a trusted bootable memory test. A recurring memory-related code on different Windows installations is significant.
- Storage: Check SSD or hard-drive health and firmware with the system or drive manufacturer’s tools. Back up data before a failing drive becomes inaccessible.
- Graphics: Reseat the card if it is removable, verify power connectors, and test with the official graphics driver.
- Motherboard and power: Look for unstable firmware, overheating, or inadequate power delivery. Use the manufacturer’s service process when diagnostics report a fault.
If the same STOP code remains on a clean, fully patched installation, suspect RAM, SSD or hard drive, GPU, motherboard, or power hardware rather than assuming another update is responsible. Reinstalling Windows is a last software step, not a substitute for testing a failing component.
Common STOP-code clues
The following patterns help prioritize checks. They do not prove a cause; use the exact code and the named module together.
| STOP code or clue | Initial focus |
|---|---|
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE |
Storage-controller, NVMe or SATA driver, firmware, storage mode, and pending update actions. Do not change boot mode casually; record the original setting first. |
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT |
Memory testing, removal of unstable tuning, and graphics, chipset, or security drivers. |
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA |
RAM stability, recently changed drivers, graphics components, and security software that filters file or memory access. |
KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION |
Graphics and chipset drivers, memory stability, and recently installed low-level software. |
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL |
The named third-party driver, Safe Mode isolation, and rollback or replacement from the official vendor. |
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION |
The module shown beside the code, then third-party drivers and damaged Windows components. |
What failed: a .sys filename |
Search the exact filename with the device manufacturer and Microsoft documentation. Confirm ownership before removing a driver; similarly named files can belong to different products. |
Do not treat these clues as guaranteed diagnoses. A memory fault can corrupt a driver-looking module, and a damaged system component can produce a code commonly associated with hardware.
Windows 10 support status and what to do after recovery
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter states that after October 14, 2025, Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through the normal support program. Availability can differ for organizations or PCs enrolled in an applicable extended-support program, so verify the device’s eligibility and enrollment rather than assuming future cumulative updates will arrive.
Once the blue screen is under control, plan migration to a currently supported Windows release when the hardware meets its requirements. Until then, keep reliable backups, document the working driver versions, and avoid optional low-level utilities that make future diagnosis harder.
Quick Recap
Preventing a repeat crash
- Keep a current backup before major updates, firmware changes, or driver replacements.
- Install drivers from the PC or component manufacturer’s official support channel and record the version you install.
- Leave overclocking disabled until the system is stable through normal workloads.
- Keep enough free disk space for servicing and recovery operations.
- Save photographs of STOP codes and crash logs rather than relying on memory after an automatic restart.
- When a crash follows an update, change one variable at a time so the successful fix is identifiable.
