Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If Selenium’s screenshot is blank after you accept a cookie banner, first check that the same browser context is still logged in and has the expected consent state. Then wait for page-specific content—not just navigation—to appear, and compare the page’s post-script DOM with the image. Those checks help separate missing authentication or application content from a rendering, viewport, overlay, or timing problem; the symptom alone does not identify one cause.
1. Verify login and consent in the browser context you capture
After navigation and consent handling, confirm the current URL and look for a page element that only appears when the account is logged in. Do not infer authentication from a successful consent click or from a previous run: the site may have redirected, the session may have expired, or the current browser context may not contain the state you expect.
Selenium’s cookie operations apply to the current browsing context. Inspect the cookies there and check their domains and relevant attributes if the site uses cookies to remember consent. Selenium requires the browser to be on the cookie’s domain before adding a cookie; when useful, its documentation notes that a smaller page on the same site can be used to preload cookies before opening a slow homepage. Cookie presence by itself does not prove the application has accepted a login session. See Selenium’s cookie documentation.

For a clean diagnostic run, avoid carrying state forward implicitly. Establish the session and consent in the run you are investigating, then verify the account indicator and consent outcome immediately before capture. If you add or change cookies, reload or otherwise let the application process the updated state before deciding the page is ready.
2. Wait for useful page content, not just navigation
A navigation milestone does not guarantee that a client-rendered application has finished loading its meaningful content. Use a bounded wait for a condition tied to the page: for example, the account indicator is visible, the main content container has text, or a known loading indicator has disappeared. If the condition times out, save the failure state rather than taking a screenshot and assuming it represents a completed page.

A fixed sleep can help isolate timing during debugging, but it is a poor sole readiness check: it can be unnecessarily slow on a fast run and too short on a slow one. Choose a condition that matches the target page and keep its timeout finite. Selenium documents page-load and asynchronous-script timeouts in its Chromium WebDriver API reference; it does not prescribe one universal readiness condition for every application.
3. Compare headful and headless runs fairly
Run the same script once with a visible browser and once in headless mode. Hold the account, URL, browser and driver versions, viewport, network environment, readiness condition, and capture timing as constant as possible. Chrome’s Selenium guidance shows enabling headless mode with --headless. If only one mode fails, that narrows the investigation to runtime or rendering differences; it does not, on its own, prove a browser defect. See Chrome’s headless automation documentation.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Set the viewport explicitly in both runs. Chrome’s headless documentation demonstrates using --window-size with screenshots. A viewport difference can move content, trigger a responsive breakpoint, or leave the expected region outside the captured view. Keep the dimensions identical while comparing modes, then test other dimensions deliberately if the page layout may be relevant. Chrome documents headless screenshots and DOM output in its headless command-line reference.
4. Compare the post-script DOM with the screenshot
Capture evidence at the same point in the run: the current URL and title, the expected element’s state, visible text, viewport dimensions, console errors, and relevant network failures. Chrome’s --dump-dom parses a page, executes scripts that may change its DOM, then serializes the resulting DOM. That makes it useful for checking whether expected content exists after scripts run, even when the screenshot looks empty.

- Expected content is in the DOM, but not in the image: investigate rendering, an overlay, viewport or scroll position, and whether the screenshot was taken too early. This is a diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed cause.
- Expected content is absent from the DOM, or an error page is present: investigate navigation, authentication, the consent flow, application scripts, and network failures before focusing on image capture.
The DOM/image comparison narrows the problem; it does not by itself identify the responsible component. Preserve both artifacts from the same run so they can be compared meaningfully.
5. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The URL or page is not the expected account page | Check redirects, login expiry, and whether the run’s current browser context contains the intended session. |
| The account indicator is missing | Inspect the current page and relevant cookies, then verify the application has processed the session state. Do not treat cookie presence alone as proof of login. |
| The account indicator appears, but main content is missing | Wait for a page-specific content condition and inspect console or network failures; the application may not have completed its work. |
| The DOM contains content, but the screenshot is blank | Compare headful and headless at the same viewport and timing; check overlays, rendering, and the captured region. |
| Headful works but headless does not | Keep all other variables matched, then investigate runtime-specific behavior. The difference narrows the search but is not proof of a particular Chrome issue. |
| Results vary between runs | Record the readiness condition and capture timing, and check for intermittent navigation, authentication, or network failures. |
6. Make a reproducible bug report
Record Selenium, browser, and driver versions; operating system or container details; headless arguments; viewport dimensions; the page URL with secrets removed; the exact readiness condition; and the screenshot, post-script DOM, and relevant logs. Change one variable at a time so a headful/headless or timing comparison remains useful. Never put cookies, access tokens, or session-storage values in logs or reports.
