Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFind where the picture disappears before changing settings: check the source in OBS Preview, the active scene in Program, and then YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. For a looping video, also confirm the file is on the VPS, playing, and set to loop. A black screen alone does not identify the cause.
Locate where the video disappears
Compare three points in the video path: the source in OBS Preview, OBS’s Program output, and the stream received by YouTube. This separates a media or scene problem from an output, connection, or ingest problem. Vultr’s setup guide says to verify that sources feed Preview and transition the intended scene to Program before starting the stream. Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS guide

- OBS Preview is black: investigate the media source or input first.
- Preview is correct, but Program is black: check the selected scene and whether the intended scene has been transitioned to Program.
- OBS output looks correct, but YouTube is black: check YouTube’s stream-health messages, stream key, ingest, and encoder configuration.
Check the looping video source on the VPS
If the 24/7 stream plays a file, the source file must be on the server and accessible to OBS. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide recommends uploading source files to the server for a 24/7 stream; its media-source instructions say to check playback in Preview, audio levels, and the Loop option. - In OBS, select the scene used for the stream and inspect the media source. Check that its file path points to the file on the VPS, not a path on your local computer.
- Confirm the media source is enabled and that the video plays visibly in Preview. Check the audio meter as well if the file is expected to contain audio.
- Enable the media source’s Loop option if the video should repeat. Observe playback through the end of the file to verify it restarts as intended.
- Once Preview is correct, transition the scene to Program and confirm that the live output shows the same picture.
If Preview is black or playback is stalled, fix the file location, source configuration, or playback before changing YouTube bitrate: bitrate cannot restore a source that OBS is not playing.

Compare OBS output with YouTube’s stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health and any messages while the stream is active. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
- If OBS Program output is black, continue investigating the source, scene, or OBS rendering path.
- If OBS output is correct but YouTube is not receiving the expected picture, use YouTube’s messages to investigate the stream key, ingest connection, and encoder setup.
- Use OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and logs alongside YouTube’s messages. Do not treat a bitrate change as a fix for a missing media source.
Check encoder settings only when diagnostics point there
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for 720p at 30 fps, the page lists H.264 at a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, and AV1 or H.265 at a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. These are codec-specific figures, not universal settings for every stream. Check YouTube’s guidance for the codec and format you actually use.

After changing an encoder setting, test before relying on the stream. YouTube advises tests that include audio and movement like those in the actual broadcast, then monitoring Live Control Room stream health. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
Investigate CPU or connection problems when there are matching symptoms
High CPU or encoding strain
CPU pressure is worth investigating when OBS shows high load or dropped frames; it is not, by itself, proof of the cause of a black screen. Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu guide lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for its described setup—not as universal minimums for every streaming workflow. The guide recommends 720p (1280×720) for a server with at least two vCPUs and says higher resolution and frame rate require more processing. It also cites CPU below 90% as an operational recommendation; that threshold is Vultr’s guidance, not a universal cutoff. If CPU is persistently high and frames are dropping, try reducing resolution or frame rate, or consider more vCPUs. Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS guide

Dropped frames or unstable connection
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube indicates a connection problem, lowering bitrate can be a useful diagnostic step. It will not fix a black or stalled source in OBS Preview. A stream that fails after closing a remote session may be affected by how the remote desktop session behaves. Vultr’s Ubuntu guide asks users to disconnect the Ubuntu desktop and verify the stream stays active. Its Windows Server section describes a separate RDP session-lock issue and a tscon workaround for that Windows setup. Identify the VPS operating system and connection type before applying session-specific advice; do not use the Windows remedy on Linux. Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS guide

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Preview is black or frozen | File path, media source, or playback | Confirm the file is on the VPS, the source points to it, playback works, and Loop is enabled if needed. |
| Preview is visible but Program is black | Scene selection or transition | Check the active scene and transition the intended scene to Program. |
| OBS output is correct but YouTube is black | Receiving stream, key, ingest, or encoder configuration | Review Live Control Room messages and stream health before changing settings. |
| Frames drop while CPU is high | Server processing capacity or demanding output settings | Try lower resolution or frame rate; consider more vCPUs if the symptoms persist. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports connection trouble | Network stability or bitrate capacity | Use OBS’s connection guidance and test a lower bitrate. |
| The stream changes after remote desktop disconnect | Operating system and remote-session behavior | Test the disconnect deliberately and follow guidance for the VPS’s OS and session type. |
