Stop the damage before the next wash. Do not pull a snagged terry loop; trim it carefully, then repair the edge that allowed it to catch. A single loop usually needs only trimming, while loose stitching, an opened hem, detached decorative trim, and missing edge fabric each require a different repair.
Identify what has failed before you sew
Bath towels have two different edge systems that are easy to confuse. The main towel body is terry fabric, made from loops that can snag. The perimeter is normally stabilized by a folded, stitched hem. Some towels also have a separate ribbon or decorative band attached over the edge. Examine the back and front in good light and classify the damage first.

| What you see | What it means | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| One loop sticks out from otherwise intact terry fabric | A snagged terry loop, not necessarily a failed hem | Do not pull it. Trim the protruding thread close to the surface with sewing scissors. |
| Loose threads run along the folded edge | The original hem stitching is loosening | Remove only dangling thread and restitch the existing fold. |
| The folded edge has opened and the towel body is visible through the gap | An open hem | Fold the edge back to its original line, pin it, and hand-sew it closed. |
| A ribbon, tape or decorative band lifts away while the towel edge remains intact | Detached separate trim | Sew through the trim and towel from the back, following the trim’s original path. |
| There is too little sound fabric to fold, or the edge is shredded | Badly damaged or missing edge fabric | Reinforce the area with a backing patch or repair sheet, then stitch through the reinforcement. |
The distinction matters. Restitching a sound folded hem will not reattach a separate ribbon, and pulling a terry loop can turn a small snag into a spreading unravel.

Gather the tools and prepare the towel
A hand repair does not require a sewing machine. The basic kit is a hand-sewing needle, thread close to the towel’s color, sewing scissors and pins. A matching thread makes the repair less visible; a contrasting color is an intentional visible-mending choice rather than a hidden repair.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use sewing scissors for controlled cuts. Ordinary blunt scissors can tug loops instead of cutting them cleanly.
- Select a needle that can pass through the hem or trim without excessive force.
- Use enough thread for a manageable sewing run. If it runs out, the previous stitches can be secured and a new length interlocked with them.
- Have pins ready to hold the original fold evenly while you work.
- For a severely weakened edge, keep a small backing patch or fusible repair sheet/hemming web available. These products require following their own instructions.
Work on a clean, dry towel. Lay the damaged edge flat and compare it with an undamaged section so you can see the original fold, stitch line and trim position. Do not cut sound towel fabric while removing loose threads.
Fix a single snagged terry loop
Tekla’s care guidance warns that pulling a snagged loop in terry fabric, including a towel, bathrobe or bathmat, can make the weave unravel. Treat the loop as excess thread, not as a handle.
- Place the towel flat so the loop cannot catch on another object.
- Do not tug, stretch or pull the loop from either side.
- With sewing scissors, trim the protruding loop as close to the towel surface as you can without cutting neighboring loops or the backing fabric.
- Run a fingertip lightly over the area. If the surrounding weave is firm and the border stitching is intact, stop there.
- If the loop is beside a loose seam or opened hem, repair that edge before washing the towel again.
Do not tie a bulky knot in a single terry loop. A knot can create another snag point and does not restore the border’s structure.
Hand-sew a loose or open towel hem
This method restores the original folded edge and is intended for a repair that can be completed without a sewing machine. The sequence follows the hand-repair procedure described by iFixit.
1. Remove only unstable thread
Cut away loose, dangling thread with sewing scissors. Stop at the point where the thread becomes part of a sound stitch or where the towel fabric is still intact. Do not enlarge the damaged area simply to make the edge look neat.

2. Re-form the original fold
Fold the towel edge back along the existing hem line. Use an undamaged portion as your visual guide: the new fold should follow the same width and direction rather than creating a new, uneven border. Place pins through the folded layers at intervals that keep the edge flat. Keep pins clear of the path where your needle will travel.
3. Anchor each corner
Thick corners receive extra stress. At each corner, pass the needle from front to back and back to front several times to anchor the fold. The iFixit procedure specifies at least five passes at a corner. Pull the thread snugly enough to close the layers, but not so tightly that the terry fabric puckers.

Starting at a secure point, sew along the lower edge of the folded hem with evenly spaced stitches. The cited guide places stitch positions about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) apart. Keep the stitch path in the existing hem area so you capture both folded layers without cutting into the towel body.
Move methodically from one pinned section to the next. Check the front after several stitches: the fold should remain straight, and no large loops should be trapped on the visible side. If the original stitch holes are still visible, use them as a guide rather than making a second, wandering line.
5. Join a new length of thread cleanly
If the thread runs out, knot the new thread close to the towel. Interlock it with the previous stitches before continuing so the changeover does not leave a loose segment. Keep the knot within the hem, where it is protected from snagging.

6. Add a second pass when the seam needs more strength
For a border that has opened repeatedly or receives heavy use, make a second pass over the hem. iFixit notes that a second layer makes the seam stronger. Follow the same edge rather than spreading the stitches into the terry body.

Knot the thread securely, trim the tail close to the knot, and remove the pins. Flex the edge gently by hand. The fold should stay closed without a gap, the corners should not lift, and no long thread ends should remain exposed.
Reattach a detached decorative border
A separate ribbon, tape or decorative band needs to be sewn back onto the towel; folding the towel’s hem alone will not hold it. Turn the towel to the back so you can position the trim accurately.
- Align the detached section with the marks or stitch holes left by its original placement.
- Insert the needle through the trim and towel from the back.
- Bring the needle through to the front, then pass it back through the towel and trim.
- Repeat this sequence along the detached section, keeping the trim flat and its edges aligned.
- At the end, make a secure knot on the back and trim the remaining thread.
Use thread close to the trim or towel color if you want the repair to disappear. If the trim is intentionally decorative, a contrasting thread can make the restored attachment look deliberate. Avoid pulling the trim tight enough to gather the towel; it should lie naturally as it did before detachment.
Reinforce an edge that cannot be folded back
Sometimes the original fold has been worn away, leaving no intact fabric to capture with stitches. In that case, forcing the old hem closed can place every stitch in weak fibers. A small backing patch or a fusible repair sheet/hemming web can provide a new layer for the stitches to hold.

Use a backing patch
Position a small piece of compatible fabric behind the weakened edge so it extends beyond the frayed area. Fold or cover the remaining towel edge over the patch and stitch through the towel and backing together. Keep the patch inside the border where possible, and trim only material that is genuinely loose.
Use fusible repair material cautiously
Prym’s repair-care index identifies iron-on repair sheets and hemming web as repair products, but the cited information does not establish towel-specific durability or one universal heat setting. Follow the particular product’s instructions, and test heat-sensitive trim or dye on an inconspicuous area first. Do not apply an iron directly to a decorative element unless its care instructions permit it.
After the reinforcement has cooled and set according to its instructions, stitch through the reinforced edge. Adhesive alone should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for edge stitching on a towel that will be washed repeatedly.

| Keep the original appearance | Match the thread, restore the original fold, and use a second pass only where needed. | Requires careful alignment and more hand work. |
| Stop a tiny failure quickly | Trim a single snagged loop or secure a short loose section promptly. | Trimming alone does not repair an opened hem. |
| Secure a separate accent band | Stitch through the trim and towel from the back and follow the existing attachment line. | The repair can show if the trim has shifted or the thread color contrasts. |
| Recover a shredded edge | Add a backing patch or repair sheet, then stitch through the reinforced area. | May change the feel or appearance of the border, and heat products need a compatibility test. |
| Finish many towels quickly | A sewing machine can be faster than hand sewing when available and suitable. | A machine is optional; the hand method works without one and gives more control on a small repair. |
Durability depends on how much intact fabric remains, how securely corners are anchored, whether a second stitch pass is added, and how the towel is laundered. No reliable statistic establishes a universal success rate or a guaranteed lifespan extension for a repaired towel border.

Care for the repaired towel
Trim loose ends and deal with small failures promptly. Tekla’s care guidance recommends securing an unraveling seam with stitches and trimming excess thread early so deterioration does not spread. Once the repair is complete:
- Follow the towel’s care label for washing and drying.
- Before the first post-repair wash, confirm that knots are tight, the hem is closed and no pin or long thread remains.
- After laundering, inspect the edge, corners and stitch line before returning the towel to heavy use.
- If a new loop appears, trim it instead of pulling it.
- If the same section opens again, stop laundering it until you reinforce the weak area or replace the damaged trim.
Inspection after washing matters because laundering can reveal a loose corner or a stitch that missed one layer of the folded hem. Catching that failure while it is small keeps the next repair limited to a short section.
Troubleshoot common repair problems
The fold keeps springing open while I sew
Remove a few stitches, re-align the fold with the original hem line and add pins closer together. Anchor the nearest corner again before continuing. A fold that shifts is usually a positioning problem, not a reason to pull the thread tighter.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The towel puckers beside the seam
Ease the thread tension and keep the stitch spacing even. The thread should hold the layers together without cinching the terry loops into ridges. If the puckering begins at a corner, redo the corner passes with a little less tension.
The repair is secure but visibly uneven
Check whether the original fold was followed. A matching thread cannot hide a hem that changes width. Unpick only the uneven section, compare it with a sound edge, and restitch that section rather than replacing the entire border.
The decorative trim no longer sits flat
Release the last few stitches and reposition the trim to its original line. Sew through both the trim and towel in sequence, using enough stitches to hold the detached length without stretching the ribbon.
There is no firm fabric for the needle
Do not pack stitches into loose fibers. Add a backing patch or suitable repair sheet/hemming web, test any heat on a hidden area, and stitch through the reinforced section after it is secured.
Another loop snags after the repair
Trim the loop and inspect the nearby seam. A repeated snag may indicate that the border edge is still loose, a thread tail was left exposed, or the towel is catching on another rough surface. Correct the edge rather than repeatedly cutting loops from the same area.
Quick Recap
Final inspection checklist
- The damage was identified as a loop, hem, detached trim or missing edge fabric.
- No snagged loop was pulled.
- Only loose thread, never sound towel fabric, was cut away.
- The original fold is even and pinned or held in position during sewing.
- Each corner has at least five anchoring passes where the thick area needs them.
- Hem stitches are spaced at about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) when following the cited hand-repair method.
- Any thread change is knotted close to the towel and interlocked with earlier stitches.
- Detached trim is sewn through both trim and towel from the back.
- Reinforcement material was tested for heat and dye compatibility before use.
- Knots are secure, tails are trimmed and the edge is inspected after laundering.
