First find out whether the YouTube broadcast ended for everyone or playback stopped on just one TV or device. Ask another viewer to check from a different device or network, and check the event in YouTube Studio. If viewers elsewhere can still watch, troubleshoot the affected device; if they cannot, inspect the stream source, encoder, connection, and Studio notices.
Find out what “stopped” means
A YouTube live stream can appear to stop in several different ways: the broadcast may have ended, playback may freeze or buffer on one device, rewind may become unavailable, or the replay may be missing. These symptoms do not have the same cause.
- Only one viewer or device is affected: start with that device, its YouTube app, and its internet connection.
- Viewers on different networks cannot watch: check the creator’s Live Control Room, encoder, and outbound connection.
- The event is live but rewind or the replay is unavailable: check YouTube’s separate DVR and archive limits.
Write down when the problem began, which devices and viewers are affected, the Studio health status and error text, and whether an encoder’s local recording continued. Those details help distinguish a playback fault from an ingest, encoder, network, or policy problem.
If the whole broadcast stopped
1. Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the affected event.
- Inspect the stream-health indicator and timestamped errors. Compare the error time with the moment viewers lost the stream.
- Check whether the event is still active and whether YouTube is receiving data from the encoder. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation says an active stream status indicates that YouTube’s servers are receiving data from the encoder correctly: Life of a Broadcast.
If Studio reports an ingest or format error, use that warning to guide the next check rather than assuming YouTube imposed a duration limit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check the encoder and its source
- Confirm the encoder is still running and sending to the intended YouTube event with the correct stream key.
- Inspect the encoder’s output preview, dashboard errors, and CPU load. A stalled source file, overloaded computer, or encoder crash can interrupt the feed even when YouTube itself is available.
- If you are playing a local video file, confirm playback has not ended, paused, or looped incorrectly. Check whether the local archive is still growing.
- If the encoder picture and sound look healthy but viewers still lose the feed, test the outbound connection from the encoder’s location.
YouTube’s creator troubleshooting separates encoder-output problems from outbound-connection problems and advises checking the encoder first: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
3. Verify the output settings
Use a resolution and bitrate that the upload connection can sustain consistently. A bitrate that exceeds available upload capacity can lead to unstable delivery; test using motion and audio similar to the actual stream, then monitor the Live Control Room.
- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) as a recommended encoder setting.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Format errors: YouTube’s error guidance says to use H.264 video and AAC audio when the format is incorrect.
These are baseline checks, not a substitute for the current warning shown in Studio or the instructions for your encoder. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

4. Test before restarting a long-running stream
Before going live again, YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion, checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device, monitoring stream quality, and verifying that a local archive file is growing. If you use a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and verifying that the player switches to the backup. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance for the current workflow.
If playback stopped only on a TV or other device
Check the connection
- Try another internet connection if one is available. If the problem occurs on Wi-Fi, test near the TV and keep the device within router range.
- Reduce Wi-Fi interference and pause other traffic on the connection, then check playback quality manually.
- For HD playback, YouTube recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every network or device will play without interruption.
See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps for streaming and video issues on TVs and other devices.
Refresh the app and device
- Quit and reopen the YouTube app.
- Sign out and back in if appropriate for the device.
- Restart the TV or streaming device and install available system updates.
- Try another supported device to see whether the same stream plays there.
Use an alternate playback path to isolate the TV app
Try playing the stream on another device and casting it to the TV, or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI and play from the laptop. If laptop playback over HDMI works but the TV’s YouTube app does not, the problem points toward the TV app or device path. HDMI can help diagnose that playback route; it cannot restore a broadcast that has ended at its source.

Does a 24/7 stream stop after 12 hours?
YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns DVR and archiving, not a universal timer that ends every live broadcast. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue, but YouTube says it may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube also says it can archive streams under 12 hours and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions have lower DVR limits. These are distinct from whether the live broadcast itself is still being transmitted.
YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as an archive backup. Its archive live streams guidance says: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its separate DVR guidance explains rewind limitations.
If the stream stops at a regular interval
A repeated stop time is a clue, not proof of a YouTube time limit. Compare each incident with encoder settings, computer or host sleep and restart behavior, connection drops, and the local recording. Check the Studio error timestamps against those events.

Review YouTube’s live settings for encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls, and check whether the encoder’s transmission is triggering the configured behavior. YouTube’s lifecycle documentation describes how auto-start and auto-end relate to encoder transmission: Life of a Broadcast. If the timing does not match a configured action, the exact cause cannot be identified without the event’s error text and device, encoder, and connection details.

A stream can be interrupted for policy reasons as well as technical ones. YouTube says a third-party content match can replace a live stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the issue is not resolved, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream.
Check YouTube Studio for a strike or notice before treating the incident as a network fault. If you have licensed third-party content, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. A license by itself does not guarantee the live stream will continue.
