If a 24/7 story livestream starts over after a crash, first identify which part failed: OBS may have lost its connection, the OBS app or computer may have stopped, the media source may have restarted, or YouTube may have ended the live event. Each needs a different fix. OBS’s Loop option repeats media; its documentation does not say that it saves and restores the exact playlist item and playback time after the OBS process crashes.
First, identify what restarted
Before changing settings, check OBS, the story source, and the broadcast in YouTube Studio. A stream that looks like one failure to viewers can involve four separate layers:

Write down the story item and approximate playback position before reproducing the problem. After a failure, note whether OBS is running, what its output status says, whether the source has restarted, and what YouTube Studio shows.

Why looping does not restore the story’s position
In OBS, a Media Source’s Loop setting replays its file after playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active starts the file when the source becomes current and visible. OBS’s VLC Video source has a Loop Playlist control. These are playback and visibility behaviors—not documented checkpoints of a playlist cursor and timestamp that survive an OBS process crash. If restarting at the beginning is acceptable, loop settings can provide continuous playback while OBS stays up. If a crash must resume the exact story and time, use a player or workflow that explicitly persists that state. The cited OBS documentation does not promise crash-time position recovery; validate any proposed setup with a controlled restart on the OBS and VLC versions you actually use.
Fix an output interruption while OBS is still open
- Configure OBS automatic reconnect. OBS documents this as an advanced setting for stream output. It is intended for an interrupted connection, not for relaunching a crashed OBS process. Consult the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide for the current controls.
- Check connection stability if interruptions recur. In OBS, look for dropped frames and output connection problems. OBS identifies connection stability and bitrate capacity as relevant causes; its troubleshooting guidance also points to possible VPN or security software interference and network hardware. Check those parts of your network path rather than assuming a media-source setting is responsible.
- Confirm recovery on the platform. Once OBS reports a connection again, check YouTube Studio to determine whether the expected broadcast is receiving data and remains live.
Recover after OBS crashes or the computer reboots
OBS automatic reconnect cannot relaunch an application that is no longer running. A separate process supervisor or operating-system startup task can relaunch OBS, but relaunching the app, starting output, keeping the same YouTube event alive, and restoring story position are distinct jobs.

- Set up an external relaunch mechanism. Configure a process supervisor or operating-system task to start OBS after the failure or reboot.
- Choose the intended OBS configuration deliberately. OBS launch parameters include
--startstreamingand options for selecting a scene collection, profile, and scene. Use the OBS launch parameters guide to choose the correct configuration. For scheduled or automated Windows launches, OBS’s guide says to set the working directory. - Decide whether to start streaming automatically. Treat
--startstreamingas a separate action to verify—not proof that the previous YouTube broadcast is still active or that the story resumes at its previous position. - Check media availability after restart. Confirm that the story files and playlist paths are accessible, the intended source is in the active scene, and its loop and visibility/restart settings match the behavior you want.
- Inspect YouTube Studio. Check the specific event’s current state and act accordingly. Reusable stream credentials or automatic start/stop options do not establish that a particular prior event remains live.
YouTube’s live broadcast API documentation describes event state, automatic start and stop, recording, and archive settings; it does not describe restoring an OBS or VLC playback cursor. YouTube’s official documentation does not specify one universal crash-recovery window, so check the actual event rather than relying on a fixed assumption.

Understand what YouTube DVR can—and cannot—do
YouTube DVR is a viewer playback control, not a broadcaster recovery checkpoint. Viewers can pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream, but very long streams have rewind limits and viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. DVR does not restore the position of a local OBS media source. See YouTube Help on DVR for live streams.

Test each failure mode before relying on recovery
OBS recommends testing stream settings before relying on them. Reproduce the relevant failures separately so you can tell which layer recovers:
- Briefly interrupt the network connection while OBS remains open. Record whether output reconnects and whether YouTube Studio still shows the expected event.
- Close or otherwise restart the OBS process in a controlled test. Check whether the supervisor relaunches the intended scene and profile, whether output starts as expected, and whether the same YouTube event remains live.
- If relevant, test a host reboot. Confirm that the operating-system task starts OBS with the expected configuration and that all media paths remain available.
- For each test, record the story item and playback time before and after. A successful app relaunch or output reconnect does not establish that the local media position was restored.
