How to Fix a 0x8007 Printer Error: Complete Windows Troubleshooting

0x8007 is not a complete printer diagnosis. In Windows, an HRESULT beginning with 0x8007 wraps a Win32 error, and the final hexadecimal digits identify the actual condition. Before choosing a fix, copy the entire code exactly as shown, including every digit after 0x8007. Also note the printer make and model, your Windows version, the connection type (USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or shared), and the exact message beside the code.

No authoritative Windows source defines a single printer fault called “0x8007” by itself. The steps below follow Microsoft’s general printer-repair sequence, then branch according to your connection and the symptom you can observe.

What the 0x8007 code means

The prefix is an HRESULT representation of a Windows error. The trailing hexadecimal portion is what distinguishes one failure from another, so two computers showing the same 0x8007 prefix may have different underlying problems. A message such as “Windows cannot connect to my printer,” “printer is offline,” “printer not detected,” or “print job stuck” can therefore require different remedies even when the visible prefix looks identical.

Write down these details before changing anything:

  • The complete hexadecimal code, with all characters after 0x8007.
  • The exact Windows message and where it appears.
  • The printer’s manufacturer and model.
  • Whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 (or an older supported Windows edition).
  • Whether the connection is USB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a printer shared from another computer.
  • Whether another computer or phone can print to the same device.

This record prevents you from treating an incomplete prefix as a specific diagnosis and gives the printer manufacturer enough information to provide model-specific help if the standard Windows steps fail.

Follow this order first

Use the least disruptive checks before reinstalling software or clearing the queue. The normal progression is:

  1. Run the built-in printer troubleshooter.
  2. Power-cycle the printer.
  3. Check the physical or network connection.
  4. Check the printer for paper, ink or toner, cover, jam, and offline conditions.
  5. Remove and add the printer again.
  6. Install the current driver from the manufacturer.
  7. Reset the Print Spooler if jobs remain stuck.
  8. Collect complete evidence and contact the manufacturer if the fault persists.

1. Run Windows’ printer troubleshooter

Windows 11

Open the Get Help app from the Start menu and start the automated printer troubleshooter. Follow each diagnostic prompt, allowing it to check the selected printer and apply the changes it recommends. If more than one printer is installed, select the one that produced the message rather than a similarly named device.

Windows 10

Use the automated printer troubleshooter where it is available on your installation. Windows may open the diagnostic tool through Settings or the Get Help experience. Let it finish before trying another repair, and record any specific condition it reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The troubleshooter can identify configuration and connection problems, but it cannot turn the incomplete prefix into a unique error code. Keep the full code and the printer model for later steps.

2. Power-cycle the printer

Microsoft documents power cycling as a general first step and specifies a 30-second unplug interval.

  1. Turn the printer off using its power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the electrical outlet.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer on.
  5. Wait until the printer finishes its startup routine and shows a ready state.

Try a test print after startup. If the printer returns immediately to an offline or error state, continue with the connection and printer-state checks rather than repeating the power cycle indefinitely.

3. Check the connection that your printer actually uses

USB and network printers fail in different ways. A USB problem is usually local to the cable, port, or device detection. A Wi-Fi problem can leave the printer powered on while the computer and printer are on different networks. Bluetooth and shared printers have their own pairing or host-computer dependencies.

USB printers

  1. Firmly reseat the USB cable at both the printer and the computer.
  2. Try a different USB port on the same computer. If you are using a hub or docking station, connect directly to the computer for this test.
  3. Inspect the cable for bent connectors, cuts, or an intermittent connection.
  4. If available, test with a known-good cable of the correct connector type, such as USB-A to USB-B, and a known-good port.
  5. After reconnecting, open Windows printer settings and check whether the printer appears without a warning.
  6. Print a Windows test page. If the printer is not detected at all, concentrate on the cable, port, power, and device setup before changing the spooler.

A replacement cable is an accessory, not a guaranteed repair. Use one only after confirming that the printer is USB-connected and the existing cable or port is damaged, loose, or unreliable.

Wi-Fi printers

  1. Confirm that the printer is powered on and connected to the intended wireless network using its display or wireless connectivity test.
  2. Confirm that the computer is connected to that same network. A guest network, a second router, or a different wireless band can prevent discovery even when both devices have internet access.
  3. Move the printer temporarily closer to the wireless router if its connection indicator is weak or repeatedly drops.
  4. Check whether the printer appears in Windows under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11 or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
  5. Use the printer’s own network test or print a configuration page if the model provides one.
  6. Try printing from another device on the same network. If no device can print, investigate the printer’s Wi-Fi setup; if another device prints successfully, focus on the Windows computer.

Bluetooth and shared printers

For Bluetooth, verify that Bluetooth is enabled on the computer, the printer is powered on, and the printer remains paired in Windows. Remove a stale pairing and pair the printer again if it appears as disconnected.

For a printer shared by another computer, make sure the host computer is powered on, connected to the printer, and still sharing it. A change to the host name, network profile, or sharing settings can make a previously installed shared printer unavailable.

USB versus Wi-Fi: choose the next test

Connection Does the printer appear in Windows? Local test Additional check What the result suggests
USB It should appear when the printer, cable, and port are working. Print a Windows test page over the connected cable. Try a different port or a known-good cable. No detection points first to power, cable, port, or device setup; detection with failed jobs points toward Windows configuration, driver, or spooler issues.
Wi-Fi It should appear when the computer and printer are on the same network and discovery succeeds. Print a Windows test page over the wireless connection. Check the printer’s wireless test and whether another device on the same network can print. Failure from every device points to the printer or network; success elsewhere points toward the affected Windows installation.

4. Check the printer itself for an error state

Windows may report a generic printer error while the printer is waiting for a physical action. Check the printer’s display, indicator lights, and access panels for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Out of paper or paper loaded incorrectly.
  • Out of ink or toner.
  • An open print door, cover, or tray.
  • A paper jam, including scraps hidden behind a removable tray.
  • An offline setting or a printer that has not completed startup.
  • A hot-pluggable bus error reported by the device.

Microsoft Learn lists these among common printer error states: Out of Paper, Print Door Open, Out of Toner, Paper Jam, Offline, and Hot-Pluggable Bus Errors. Correct the physical condition, close every panel, reload paper to the model’s guides, and clear the printer’s own warning before testing Windows again.

5. Remove and add the printer again

Re-adding the device rebuilds its Windows registration and can correct a stale port or discovery record. Make sure you know the printer model and connection details before removing it.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, choose Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. On Windows 10, choose Devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device. Confirm the removal.
  4. Restart the printer. For a Wi-Fi device, confirm it has rejoined the intended network; for USB, reconnect the cable directly to the computer.
  5. Return to the same printer-settings page and choose Add device or Add a printer or scanner.
  6. Select the correct printer when Windows finds it and complete the setup.

If Windows cannot find a new wireless printer, follow the current setup instructions for that exact model. A manufacturer’s setup process may be required for wireless credentials, discovery, or a model-specific port.

6. Install the latest printer driver

Microsoft states that most printers require the latest driver to work well and directs users to the printer manufacturer for current drivers and model-specific troubleshooting. Use the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and Windows edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact model number printed on the printer or shown in its existing Windows entry.
  2. Download the current driver package intended for your Windows version from the manufacturer’s official support resource.
  3. Read the installation instructions before running the package. Some installers require the printer to be disconnected until prompted; others require it to be powered on and connected.
  4. Complete the installation, then restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  5. Print a test page and record whether the full error code changes.

Do not substitute a driver for a different model simply because its name looks similar. If the manufacturer provides separate packages for USB, network, or a particular Windows edition, select the package that matches your setup.

7. Clear the queue and restart Print Spooler

Use this advanced step when jobs remain stuck, the queue will not clear, or Windows repeatedly shows a print-job error after the printer and driver are otherwise ready. Resetting the spooler deletes all queued print jobs, so save or recreate anything you still need to print.

  1. Press the Windows key, type Services, and open the Services app with administrator permission if prompted.
  2. Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS in the address bar.
  4. Approve administrator access if Windows asks, then delete the files inside that folder. Do not delete the PRINTERS folder itself.
  5. Return to the Services app, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
  6. Open the service’s properties and set Startup type to Automatic, then apply the setting.
  7. Reopen the printer queue, confirm it is empty, and submit one small test page.

If the queue immediately fills again, pause printing and check the driver, the selected printer port, and the printer’s physical or network state. Repeatedly deleting the queue without correcting the source of the job will not resolve the underlying fault.

Should you replace the cable or repair Windows software?

Observation More useful first action Reason
The USB printer is not detected, disappears when the cable moves, or fails with more than one application. Test a different USB port and a known-good cable. Detection and intermittent behavior are consistent with a cable, connector, or port problem.
The printer is detected reliably, but jobs remain stuck or Windows reports a spooler-related message. Check the driver and reset the Print Spooler. The connection is present, so queue or software state becomes the more useful branch.
The same printer works from another computer using the same cable or network. Repair the affected Windows installation by re-adding the printer and installing its current driver. The printer and connection work elsewhere, narrowing the problem to the original computer.
No device can print over Wi-Fi, and the printer’s wireless test fails. Recheck the printer’s network setup and follow the model manual. The failure is broader than one Windows queue.

8. Gather evidence and escalate

If the error remains after the sequence above, avoid guessing from the prefix. Contact the printer manufacturer using its current support and driver resources, and provide:

  • Any physical state shown by the printer, such as a jam, cover warning, low supplies, or offline status.
  • What changed immediately before the error, such as a Windows update, driver installation, cable move, router change, or printer relocation.

This information lets support distinguish a model-specific driver problem from a USB, wireless, queue, or printer-state failure. Microsoft’s general workflow ends with manufacturer instructions and current drivers when the built-in checks do not resolve the problem.
