Start by verifying the code before changing Windows. Microsoft’s current installation and update references do not define 0x800745D or assign it a specific repair. It may be a mistyped, truncated, or misread code, so the safest approach is to record the complete message and then work through general Windows 8 repair steps that match where the failure occurred.
Back up personal files first. Then remove nonessential hardware, check update services and storage, repair system files, retry the operation in a clean boot, and preserve logs if it still fails. Do not silently replace 0x800745D with a similar-looking code such as 0x8007045D; the correct remedy depends on the exact characters and the operation that produced them.

What “0x800745D failed” means on Windows 8
At present, there is no verified Microsoft explanation that maps 0x800745D to one Windows component or one guaranteed fix. The code might have appeared in Windows Update, during an upgrade or installation, while activating software, or inside an individual application. Those contexts can have completely different causes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft’s common-error documentation uses the exact code to select a mitigation. Because the reviewed reference does not list 0x800745D, any page that states a single definitive meaning for this code is making an unsupported assumption. Treat the characters as a lead to investigate, not as proof of disk failure, malware, or a damaged installation.

Check whether you are running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the edition and build shown. Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023; the system still runs, but Microsoft no longer provides standard support or security updates for it. That lifecycle status can affect the availability of updates and help, but it does not identify the meaning of this particular code.
First, capture the exact failure
- Copy the complete error text exactly as displayed, including any punctuation, spaces, and leading zeroes.
- Write down where it appeared: Windows Update, setup or upgrade, activation, or a named application.
- Record the update number if the message lists a KB, plus the date and time of the failed attempt.
- Take a screenshot or photograph of the dialog before closing it.
- Check whether the code is identical in Windows Update history, an installer log, and the dialog. A missing digit can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
If the text is actually a different code, use that complete code when consulting Microsoft documentation or support. Do not apply a code-specific fix merely because the number looks similar.
Protect your data before repair work
Copy documents, photos, browser data, and other irreplaceable files to an external disk or another trusted location. System-file repairs normally preserve personal files, but an upgrade, recovery operation, or storage problem can make the situation worse. If the computer contains only one drive, at least verify that important files open from a second copy before continuing.
Remove hardware that setup does not need
Microsoft’s installation guidance recommends unplugging nonessential hardware, including USB flash drives. Shut down the computer, then disconnect printers, scanners, webcams, external hard disks, card readers, game controllers, USB hubs, and other accessories. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any device required to boot.
Retry the same operation after reconnecting only the essential devices. If the error disappears, reconnect accessories one at a time and repeat the operation; the last device connected is a useful suspect. This test does not prove that a peripheral caused 0x800745D, but it removes a common source of setup conflicts.
Match the repair path to where the error appeared
| Where it failed | Checks to make first | Data and system impact | Installation media needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Update history, Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service status, free space, and failed-download cache | Cache and service changes affect update components; personal files are not targeted, but back up first | No for the initial checks |
| Upgrade or Windows setup | Nonessential hardware, clean boot, free space, network reliability, and setup logs | An upgrade changes system files, so a complete backup is important | Optional; USB media can provide recovery or installation files and temporary storage |
| Activation or an application installer | Exact application name, permissions, network access, and whether the same code appears outside that app | System-file repairs may be unnecessary if the failure is isolated to one program | Usually not |
Check storage, downloads, and network conditions
Make room on the system drive
Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then Administrative Tools and Disk Cleanup. Select the Windows drive and remove only files you recognize as safe to delete. Keep enough free space for the update or installer to unpack temporary files; Microsoft identifies low disk space as a cause of update failures.
If the system drive is very small, an installation or recovery USB drive can provide temporary storage or hold installation media. A USB drive is an optional aid, not a proven cure for the unidentified code. Do not disconnect it while setup is actively reading from it.

Use a stable connection and pause other large downloads. If a VPN, proxy, or filtering product is interfering with the online upgrade, disconnect it temporarily and retry on the normal network. Re-enable the service afterward. Avoid repeatedly starting the update while the connection is dropping; each interruption can leave another incomplete download.
Run System File Checker
Microsoft lists System File Checker (SFC) as a first-line repair for damaged or missing Windows files.
- Save your work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Press
Windows key + Xand select Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window or power off the computer.
- Restart Windows, then retry the operation that produced the code.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. Record the exact result. A repaired file does not establish that it was the cause of 0x800745D; it only shows that Windows found and handled an integrity problem.
Use DISM only when component-store corruption is indicated
Microsoft Learn documents a sequence of Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repair followed by SFC for specific component-store corruption codes. The reference does not classify 0x800745D as one of them, so do not treat DISM as a code-specific solution. It is reasonable when SFC reports that source files cannot be repaired, Windows servicing reports component-store damage, or another diagnostic explicitly points to that store.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) again.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - Allow the process to finish; it can take substantially longer than SFC.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
sfc /scannowa second time, then retry the failed update or setup.
DISM may require access to Windows servicing files and can fail if the component store or the network source is unavailable. Preserve the displayed result rather than repeating the command indefinitely.

Verify Windows Update services and history
Review the failed entry
Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update and choose View update history. Find the failed entry and write down its exact code and KB number. If the history contains a different code from the dialog, use the history entry for the update investigation and keep the original dialog for comparison.
Check the services
- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services.
- Confirm that each service is not disabled. If one is stopped, use its context menu to start it; if it is already running, use Restart where available.
- Close the Services window and retry the update.
Do not change unrelated service settings or disable security services permanently. If a service immediately stops again, record that behavior for escalation instead of repeatedly forcing it to run.

Use this step only when Windows Update history shows a failed or incomplete download and the services above are functioning. Windows recreates the download cache; renaming it preserves the old folder in case logs or files are needed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
net stop wuauserv, thennet stop bits. - Open File Explorer and go to
C:Windows. - Rename
SoftwareDistributiontoSoftwareDistribution.old. If Windows says the folder is in use, return to the command window and confirm both services stopped. - Run
net start wuauserv, thennet start bits. - Restart Windows and check for updates again.
This resets a download cache; it does not repair every servicing, compatibility, or hardware problem. If the same KB fails with the same code, keep the new history entry and move to the next diagnostic rather than renaming the folder repeatedly.
Retry setup with a clean boot
A clean boot prevents third-party startup programs and non-Microsoft services from interfering with setup. It is especially useful when the error occurs during an upgrade rather than an ordinary update.
- Press
Windows key + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Retry the failed installation or upgrade with nonessential peripherals still disconnected.
- After testing, open
msconfigagain, choose Normal startup, apply the change, and restart to restore ordinary startup behavior.
Do not leave Microsoft services hidden and every third-party service disabled after the test. The purpose is isolation, not a permanent configuration.
Check a specific update before installing it manually
If the failure names a KB package, verify that the package matches the computer’s architecture and prerequisites. Microsoft lists KB3058163 as a Windows 8 x64 update package published July 15, 2024. That listing does not mean it applies to every Windows 8 installation: x64 architecture and prerequisite conditions still matter. Do not force an x64 package onto a 32-bit system, and do not assume that installing a package manually will fix an unidentified code.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compare the KB number in the update history with the package description, confirm the edition and architecture in Control Panel > System, and install only a package intended for that configuration. If applicability is unclear, stop and obtain help with the full KB and system details.
Use recovery or installation media when ordinary repair is not enough
Windows installation or recovery media can help you start a repair environment, reinstall an update, or provide temporary storage on a device with a small hard drive. Microsoft’s guidance treats a USB drive as an available method, not as a direct fix for 0x800745D.
- Use media that matches the Windows edition and architecture.
- Back up files before selecting reset, refresh, reinstall, or any option that may remove applications or data.
- Disconnect other USB storage so setup cannot choose the wrong target.
- If the same code appears from both the installed system and the USB environment, record that fact; it helps separate a Windows installation issue from a peripheral or application issue.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the code remains after the applicable steps, stop making broad changes and collect evidence for Microsoft support or a qualified technician:
- The complete dialog text and a screenshot.
- The exact Windows edition, architecture, and build from
winverand System. - The operation that failed and the time it failed.
- Windows Update history, including the KB number and full result code.
- The final SFC and DISM messages, if those commands were run.
- Relevant setup logs and
CBS.logwhen the failure involved servicing or an upgrade. - A list of peripherals that were connected and whether the clean-boot retry changed the result.
Tell the technician that Microsoft’s reviewed references do not assign a meaning to 0x800745D. That qualification prevents an incorrect code substitution and keeps the investigation focused on the actual operation, logs, and system state.
