How to Fix 0x8007422: Verify the HRESULT and Repair Windows Update Safely

There is no verified Microsoft definition for the exact string 0x8007422. Before changing services, the registry, or permissions, copy the code character-for-character from the error and note what Windows was doing. A missing zero or transposed digit can point to a different HRESULT. Microsoft does document 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, but that is a possible transcription correction—not proof that 0x8007422 has the same meaning.

The safest approach is to run the Windows Update troubleshooter, repair the Windows image and protected system files with Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands, check disk and device conditions, and then retry. If the screen still shows exactly 0x8007422, preserve the full message and logs rather than applying an unverified code-specific fix.

What 0x8007422 means—and what it does not establish

HRESULTs are hexadecimal status values used by Windows components. The exact string 0x8007422 does not appear as a mapped value in the Microsoft HRESULT reference or the Windows Update error catalogs reviewed for this issue. You should therefore treat the number as unidentified until it has been checked against the original dialog, setup log, or update history entry.

Use the Microsoft references for the code that is actually on your screen, not for a visually similar value. The Microsoft HRESULT reference is the authoritative place to compare a hexadecimal value with a documented status. Microsoft’s common Windows Update errors specifically documents 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, which indicates that a required service, commonly Windows Update, is disabled or stopped.

Do not assume that adding or removing a zero is harmless. 0x8007422 and 0x80070422 are different hexadecimal values, and a service fix is appropriate only when the latter is confirmed.

Before you start: preserve the evidence

These checks prevent you from repairing the wrong component and make escalation possible if the code remains unidentified.

  1. Copy the complete message. Include the prefix, every digit, punctuation, and any text naming Windows Update, an upgrade, activation, repair, or another operation. A screenshot is useful, but also type the value so that similar characters are not confused.
  2. Record the environment. Note whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10, the operation that failed, and approximately when it failed. If the same code appears in more than one place, record each context separately.
  3. Save work and disconnect nonessential hardware. Microsoft lists removing nonessential external devices as an upgrade-troubleshooting step. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and any device required to operate the computer connected.
  4. Use an administrator account. DISM, SFC, and disk repair require an elevated Command Prompt. If the account is managed by an organization, check its support policy before changing services or security settings.
  5. Do not start with registry cleaners or random permission edits. There is no documented mapping for the exact code, so an unverified code-specific tweak can damage a working installation while providing no diagnostic value.

Step 1: run the Windows Update troubleshooter

When the failure occurs while downloading or installing an update, begin with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter. It checks common update configuration and service conditions before you make deeper changes. Microsoft keeps the current procedure in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Troubleshoot, and Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommended correction, restart if requested, and try the update again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Accept a proposed repair, restart, and retry the operation.

Menu names can differ slightly by Windows build. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the image and file repairs below; that result does not validate or invalidate the hexadecimal code.

Step 2: check the Windows Update service only if the code is 0x80070422

Use this branch when you have confirmed the screen says 0x80070422, or when the message explicitly says a service is disabled. Microsoft associates that documented value with a disabled service. Do not infer the same cause from an unverified 0x8007422 string.

  1. Press Windows key+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services console, locate Windows Update.
  3. Open its properties. If the service is disabled, change the startup setting to an enabled option available on your edition, apply the change, and select Start. If it is already running, use Restart.
  4. Close the console, restart Windows, and retry the update.

If your organization controls the service or the setting reverts after a restart, stop changing it and contact the administrator. A service that starts successfully does not prove that the broader update problem is solved; it only addresses the documented 0x80070422 condition.

Step 3: repair the Windows image and protected system files

Microsoft’s documented repair order is DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the Windows component store (the image from which Windows sources protected files); SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store. Use an elevated Command Prompt and run the commands separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to finish. The scan can appear to pause for a while, particularly on a slow disk or when the component store has substantial damage. Do not close the window because progress is not moving.

  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Let the verification reach 100 percent. Restart Windows after the commands finish, then retry Windows Update. Microsoft’s command guidance and repair sequence are documented in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows. The same DISM-plus-SFC route is described for component-store corruption in Microsoft’s common Windows Update errors.

How to handle an unsuccessful run

  • If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue to SFC rather than skipping it.
  • If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing the update; the repaired files may not be active until the reboot.
  • If either command reports that it could not complete, copy the complete output. Do not repeatedly interrupt the command or substitute registry changes for the repair.
  • If the commands complete without finding a problem and the exact code remains, move to the disk, device, and evidence checks rather than declaring the HRESULT decoded.

Step 4: check disk and device conditions

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes disk-error repair and a Device Manager check because storage faults and driver problems can prevent an update or upgrade even when the update service is running.

Check the system drive

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Run:
chkdsk /f C:

If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, confirm only if you can restart promptly. Save open files, reboot, and allow the check to finish. The command checks the file system for errors; it is not a substitute for backing up important data.

Review Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager from Start search or the Power User menu.
  2. Look for devices with a yellow warning icon, an unknown-device entry, or a device that appeared immediately before the update began failing.
  3. Record the device name and status. Avoid deleting a driver merely because it is old; if a device is essential, obtain the correct driver through the computer or device manufacturer’s supported channel.

Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error guidance also recommends checking Device Manager and repairing disk errors. A clean Device Manager view does not prove that 0x8007422 has a known meaning; it only removes two common environmental causes.

Step 5: retry in a controlled way

After the troubleshooter, any applicable service correction, DISM/SFC, and the restart, retry the same operation that originally failed. Keep the context unchanged where possible so you can tell whether the repair had an effect.

  • Open Settings and use the Windows Update page to select Check for updates, or repeat the upgrade action that produced the message.
  • Write down whether the failure occurs during checking, downloading, installation, restart, or the first boot after installation. That stage is often more useful diagnostically than the code alone.
  • If security software or another system-level filter is known to control update traffic, follow that product’s documented temporary troubleshooting procedure or ask its administrator for help. Do not permanently disable protection or remove a filter driver as a blind experiment.
  • If a different code appears after the repair, stop using the old code as the diagnosis. Record the new value and look it up separately.

When the screen still says exactly 0x8007422

At this point, the important fact is that the exact string still has no verified mapping in the Microsoft references cited above. Escalate with evidence instead of applying a generic “fix” designed for another HRESULT.

Collect this information

  • The full error text and a screenshot, with the hexadecimal value copied exactly.
  • Windows edition and version, the failed operation, and the date and time of the failure.
  • Results from the Windows Update troubleshooter, including any correction it applied.
  • The complete DISM and SFC output, including whether either tool repaired files or could not complete.
  • Whether chkdsk /f C: ran and whether Device Manager showed a warning.
  • The relevant Windows Update and Component-Based Servicing (CBS) logs requested by your administrator or Microsoft Support.

Provide that package to your organization’s administrator, the computer manufacturer, or Microsoft Support. A support engineer can match the code to the component and event sequence that generated it. Do not represent 0x8007422 as 0x80070422 unless the original source confirms the latter.

Common wrong turns to avoid

Wrong turn Why it is risky Better approach
Changing the Windows Update service for every similar-looking code The documented service-disabled value is 0x80070422, not the unverified 0x8007422 Verify the code first; use the service branch only for the documented value or an explicit service message
Running SFC before DISM SFC relies on the component store as its repair source Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then sfc /scannow
Repeating a failed update without recording the stage You lose the context needed to distinguish download, installation, restart, and driver failures Record the stage, timestamp, and complete message on each attempt
Using registry cleaners or downloaded “repair” scripts There is no verified code mapping to justify arbitrary registry or permission changes Use Microsoft’s troubleshooter and repair commands, then escalate with logs
Assuming a successful DISM run guarantees the update will install DISM addresses image health, not every service, disk, driver, or policy condition Restart, retry, and evaluate the resulting code and failure stage
