0x8007422 is not a confirmed, documented Windows error code. Users have reported that exact string when Microsoft Store will not open or download an app and when a game sign-in fails, but Microsoft’s common Windows Update table does not define it. First copy the code exactly and identify the failing component. In particular, do not confuse 0x8007422 with the documented 0x80070422, which means a disabled Windows Update service. The correct fix depends on that distinction.
Start by confirming the code and the failing Windows component
Error dialogs, screenshots and typed notes often lose a zero or transpose two digits. Treat the string as unconfirmed until you check the original message. A single-character difference can point to a different subsystem and therefore a different repair.

- Copy the complete hexadecimal value. Include the leading
0x, every digit, and any accompanying text. If the message is in a screenshot, zoom in rather than retyping it from memory. - Record the Windows build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Note the edition, version and OS build shown in the dialog. - Record what failed. Write down whether the Store would not open, an app download stopped, a game or Xbox sign-in failed, Windows Update reported the code, or another component displayed it.
- Restart once before deeper repairs. A pending update or a process holding a Store or update file open can make a first attempt look worse than it is.
The version and build matter because Microsoft changes Store, Xbox and servicing procedures between Windows releases. Keep these details with the exact message if you need support later.

What 0x8007422 does—and does not—tell you
The exact string 0x8007422 appears in Microsoft Q&A reports about Microsoft Store opening failures, app-download failures and game sign-in problems. It is not defined in Microsoft’s common Windows Update error table, so it cannot be assigned one universal meaning from the number alone. There is no reliable published statistic showing how often it occurs or how often a particular remedy succeeds.

The near-match 0x80070422 is a different code. Microsoft documents that value as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, commonly associated with a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. Never apply the 0x80070422 service interpretation to 0x8007422 unless you have rechecked every character.
Choose the least invasive remedy that matches the symptom
| Failing surface | First action | Next action if it persists | Invasiveness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store opens poorly, will not open, or will not download | Reset the Store cache with wsreset |
Use the current Store repair or re-registration procedure for your recorded Windows build | Low to moderate |
| Xbox or game sign-in | Confirm whether the Store also fails, then run wsreset if it does |
Document the game, account surface and build for component-specific support | Low to moderate |
| Windows Update | Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter | Check the Windows Update service if the code is actually 0x80070422; then consider DISM and SFC when file damage is suspected |
Low to high |
| Another component | Capture its full message and identify the component before changing services or files | Follow that component’s current Microsoft repair procedure | Depends on component |
This order avoids changing Windows services or system files when the problem is limited to a Store cache. It also prevents a Store remedy from being mistaken for a Windows Update repair.
Fix a Microsoft Store failure
1. Reset the Store cache with wsreset
- Close Microsoft Store and any installer window.
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter
wsresetand press Enter. - Wait while the command completes. A blank or command window can remain visible for a short time.
- Microsoft Store should reopen automatically. Try the original action again: opening the Store, downloading the app, or signing in.
wsreset targets the Store cache; it does not erase your Windows installation. If the Store works after the reset, no broader service or system-file change is justified.
2. Use the build-appropriate Store repair procedure
If the cache reset does not change the result, use Microsoft’s current Store repair or re-registration instructions for the edition and build recorded with winver. Windows labels and available commands change, so do not copy a procedure intended for a different release. A repair or re-registration step should be performed only after closing Store processes and reading what the procedure changes. Retry the same Store operation after it completes and restart if the procedure requests it.
3. Separate a Store problem from an account or game problem
If the Store opens and downloads normally but a particular game still cannot sign in, the number alone does not establish that the Store is at fault. Record the game or Xbox surface, the account state and the complete sign-in message. Apply only the component-specific guidance for that surface rather than disabling Windows services globally.
Fix a Windows Update failure
Run the built-in troubleshooter
Use the path that matches your Windows version:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
Allow the troubleshooter to finish, apply any suggested correction, restart Windows, and check for updates again. If the dialog displays 0x8007422 but the failure is clearly in Windows Update, keep the exact text and build; the number remains unconfirmed rather than automatically becoming the documented 0x80070422.
Know the Windows 10 support boundary
Microsoft Support states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” On a Windows 10 installation after that date, the absence of regular support changes what update assistance and servicing options are available. It does not prove that a Store or sign-in error is caused by the end of support. Record the installed edition and build before deciding whether an upgrade or another supported servicing path is appropriate.

When the code is actually 0x80070422, check Windows Update service status
Perform this section only after verifying that the message says 0x80070422, not 0x8007422. The documented meaning is a disabled service.
- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows asks. - Find Windows Update in the list.
- Open its properties and inspect Startup type. A disabled setting prevents the service from starting; set an appropriate enabled startup option rather than leaving it Disabled.
- If the service is stopped, choose Start. If it is already running but behaving incorrectly, choose Restart when available.
- Close the console, restart Windows, and check for updates again.
Do not change unrelated services based on a visual resemblance between the two codes. If Windows Update still fails, preserve the service state and the exact error for the next diagnostic step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC
System-file repair is appropriate when Windows Update symptoms suggest damaged or missing servicing files, or when several Windows components fail. It is not a first response to an isolated Store-cache problem.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. Search for Command Prompt or Terminal, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Run this command exactly, then wait for it to reach completion:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait for System File Checker to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage appears unchanged at some stages.
- Restart Windows and retry the operation that originally failed.
DISM services the running Windows image; SFC checks protected system files. If either command reports that it could not complete, save the full result instead of repeatedly rerunning it without a new diagnosis. A clean result does not prove that a Store account, game service or network issue is fixed; it only narrows the likely causes.
Escalate without losing the diagnostic trail
Escalation is reasonable when the Store still fails after wsreset and the build-appropriate Store procedure, or when Windows Update still fails after its troubleshooter and indicated file repair. Before contacting support, assemble:
- The exact code as displayed, including capitalization and the complete message.
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The failing surface: Store, a named app download, Xbox or game sign-in, Windows Update, or another component.
- The time the problem began and whether it followed an update, account change or software installation.
- The steps already completed and the resulting messages from
wsreset, the troubleshooter, DISM or SFC.
For an Update-specific failure, follow Microsoft’s current component-reset guidance for the recorded build rather than pasting an old batch file from an unrelated forum. For a Store-only failure, use the current repair or re-registration procedure supplied for that build. Back up important files before any operation that changes system components, and avoid registry cleaners or random service changes that are not tied to the confirmed failing surface.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that prolong this error
- Dropping a zero:
0x8007422and0x80070422are not interchangeable. - Fixing the wrong surface: A Store cache reset cannot by itself explain a game-only sign-in failure, and a Windows Update service change is unjustified for a Store-only symptom.
- Skipping the build: Instructions and labels differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 and between builds.
- Interrupting repairs: Closing
wsreset, DISM or SFC before completion can leave the original state unchanged. - Expecting a guaranteed result: No documented success rate exists for this exact code, and a repair that works for one reported context may not apply to another.
A practical decision checklist
- Read the code again from the original dialog.
- Run
winverand save the edition, version and build. - Identify the failing surface before changing anything.
- For Microsoft Store symptoms, run
wsresetand retry. - For Windows Update symptoms, run the version-specific troubleshooter.
- Only if the confirmed code is
0x80070422, inspect the Windows Update service. - Use DISM followed by SFC when broader symptoms support suspected system-file damage.
- If the issue remains, preserve the evidence and use the current build-specific Microsoft escalation path.
