Confirm the code before changing Windows
Read the message carefully and copy the code exactly. A missing zero, an extra digit or a transposed character can send you to the wrong repair. The reported 0x8007422 symptom is associated with Microsoft Store and app-delivery problems in the available Microsoft Q&A report; it is not proof that every Windows 8 installation has the same underlying fault.

- Press
Windows+R, typewinver, and press Enter. - Record whether the dialog says Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, along with the version and build number.
- Write down the component that displayed the message: Microsoft Store, a particular app, Xbox or game sign-in, Windows Update, or another installer.
- Copy the complete code, including every zero and the
0xprefix. Take a screenshot if the message disappears quickly.
The component matters more than the number. A Store cache reset is a sensible first move for a Store failure, while an update-service repair is appropriate only when Windows Update is the component reporting the error.

Fix Microsoft Store failures first
1. Reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as the first cache-repair step for Store problems. It does not require you to delete Store folders manually.

- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window opens. Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Try the original download or sign-in again.
Do not close the blank window immediately; its lack of text is normal. If it remains open for several minutes, close it, restart Windows, and run the command once more. A cache reset cannot repair an unsupported app, a damaged user profile or a service that is failing outside the Store.
2. Install available Windows updates
Use the Windows 8 PC settings or Control Panel update page and install updates that are offered for your edition. Restart when requested, then test the Store again. An update can replace a damaged Store component or restore dependencies that an app expects, but Windows 8 and 8.1 no longer receive normal security or feature servicing, so the list may be empty even when the operating system is outdated.
3. Update Microsoft Store itself
Open Store, open the Settings or account menu, and choose the Store-app update option when it is available. The label varies by Windows 8 build. If Store opens but downloads fail, sign out of the Store account, restart the computer, sign in again and retry one small, free app. This separates an account or session problem from a system-wide Store problem.
4. Determine whether only one app is affected
If other Store apps download normally, do not reset Windows for a single failure. Check the affected app’s requirements, installed-app settings and available disk space. Remove and reinstall that app only if its Store page permits it. For a game, confirm that the same Microsoft account is being used by Store and the game’s sign-in screen. A single incompatible or no-longer-supported app can fail even when Store is healthy.
5. Re-register Store packages as an advanced step
Use this only after the cache reset and updates have failed and Store itself is the component that will not open. Create a restore point first if System Protection is enabled, and close Store windows.

- Open an elevated PowerShell window: press the Windows key, type
PowerShell, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run the following command exactly as one line:

When the problem is Windows Update instead
Check whether the code is actually 0x80070422
Microsoft’s published Windows Update error table defines 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, meaning the Windows Update service has stopped or is not running. That diagnosis must not be transferred to 0x8007422 without checking the displayed code. Return to winver and the original error dialog before changing services.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Troubleshooting, then Fix problems with Windows Update (the wording can differ slightly by Windows 8 edition).
- Allow the troubleshooter to apply repairs, including administrator-approved changes.
- Restart and check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter says it cannot repair the problem, note the category it reports. A permissions issue, a stopped service and a damaged download cache require different next steps.
Verify the Windows Update service
For a confirmed 0x80070422 or a Windows Update message that says the service is disabled, press Windows+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Find Windows Update, open its properties, set Startup type to a non-disabled option appropriate to your normal policy, select Start if it is stopped, and apply the change. Do not alter unrelated services simply because they have similar names. Restart Windows and retry the update.
Reset the Windows Update download components
Use this procedure only for Windows Update failures, not for a Microsoft Store-only problem. It requires an administrator Command Prompt and temporarily renames update caches so Windows can recreate them.

- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run each command separately and wait for it to finish:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
rename %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
rename %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvcRestart, then check for updates. If a net stop command says the service is not running, continue; if a rename says the folder is in use, restart and repeat the procedure before trying again. Do not delete the renamed folders while troubleshooting; they provide a rollback reference and may contain useful logs.
Account, network and app checks
After the Store cache and update paths, test the simplest possible transaction: sign in with the intended Microsoft account, open one free app page and start a download. If the Store works on another Windows account on the same computer, the original profile is likely the problem. If no account can open or download anything, focus on Store registration, Windows servicing and network policy rather than reinstalling individual apps.
- Temporarily disconnect and reconnect the network, then retry once; avoid repeatedly clicking Download while the Store is still processing.
- Check that Windows displays the correct date, time and time zone. Authentication and certificate checks can fail when the clock is badly wrong.
- If the computer uses a work, school or family proxy, ask the administrator whether Store traffic is blocked. Do not remove managed security settings without permission.
- Keep enough free space for the app and its temporary download. A full system drive can look like a Store download failure.
These checks do not establish a universal cause for 0x8007422; they simply separate an account, connection or storage issue from a damaged Store installation.
Recovery options when the manual fixes fail
Use System Restore only for a recent, identifiable change
If Store or Windows Update worked until a driver, utility or system change was installed, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and select a restore point from before that change. System Restore can remove recently installed programs or settings while leaving personal documents in place, but review the affected-program list before confirming. It is not a replacement for a backup.
Repair the profile or installation, not just the code
A Store failure limited to one Windows account can justify testing a new local account. If every account fails and Windows components are broadly unstable, back up personal files and consider Windows 8’s repair or refresh options. Read each option carefully: refresh and reset operations can remove desktop programs, settings or files depending on the choice. Do not start a reset merely because the hexadecimal code looks unfamiliar.

Capture evidence before asking for help
- Exact code and complete wording

This information prevents a helper from applying the 0x80070422 service diagnosis to a different code or recommending a system reset for a single incompatible app.

Windows 8 support limits matter in 2026
Microsoft lists January 12, 2016 as the end of support for Windows 8 and January 10, 2023 as the end of support for Windows 8.1. Unsupported devices no longer receive Microsoft technical support, software updates or security fixes. A Store error can therefore be a compatibility or availability limit that troubleshooting cannot permanently remove.
Microsoft also states that installed Windows 8.1 Store apps and games could continue working after January 10, 2023, but new app and in-app purchases stopped. Publisher updates were expected through June 30, 2023 unless a developer supported an app independently. Because that date has passed, a particular app may no longer sign in, download dependencies or accept purchases on Windows 8.1 even after the Store cache is repaired.

Is 0x8007422 dangerous?
The code by itself is an application or servicing failure message, not evidence that the computer is infected. Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites, disable security software permanently, or run registry cleaners because an online page promises a guaranteed fix. Use the component-specific steps above, keep backups before invasive recovery, and treat any request for payment or remote access with caution.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Stop changing services when the message came from Microsoft Store rather than Windows Update.
- Stop reinstalling apps when only one title fails and the Store works for others; investigate compatibility and publisher support.
- Stop expecting a permanent software repair when the app depends on online services that no longer support Windows 8 or 8.1.
- Escalate with the exact code, build and symptom after the cache reset, updates and the relevant troubleshooter have been tried.
The practical decision is straightforward: use wsreset.exe for a Store symptom, verify and repair Windows Update only for an Update symptom, and treat 0x80070422 as a separate documented code rather than assuming it explains 0x8007422.
