Reports dated May 5, 2023 associate the exact string with Microsoft Store refusing to open, app downloads failing, and Minecraft or other game sign-in problems. Another report places it in an Xbox or update context. Treat the code as a clue, not as proof that one Windows service is broken. First copy the code exactly, run winver to record your Windows edition, version and build, and identify which component displayed it. For the reported Store symptoms, wsreset is the safest first action. Do not substitute the similar-looking 0x80070422: that is a different code associated with a disabled Windows Update service.
What 0x8007422 tells you—and what it does not
Error strings are useful only when the characters and the affected component are known. In Microsoft Q&A records, users reported 0x8007422 when Microsoft Store would not open, Store downloads failed, or a game such as Minecraft could not sign in. The support replies asked for the Windows version and suggested trying wsreset. A separate report recorded the same characters in an Xbox or update setting. These reports establish a recurring symptom, not a single documented Windows subsystem or one guaranteed repair.

The code is also easy to mistype. 0x80070422 is a nearby but distinct value. Microsoft support answers commonly describe 0x80070422 as indicating a disabled Windows Update service. That explanation must not be applied to 0x8007422 merely because the digits look similar. Changing services on the basis of a misread code can create a second problem.

The correct fix depends on whether the message came from Store, an Xbox or game sign-in flow, Windows Update, or an optional-feature installer, and on the Windows build running at the time.

Before changing anything: capture the failure
Do these checks while the error is visible or immediately after it appears. They prevent you from applying a service fix meant for another code or component.
- Copy every character. Check the leading zero, the letter
x, and each digit. Record whether the dialog says0x8007422or0x80070422. If you only have a screenshot, zoom in rather than relying on memory. - Record Windows build information. Press
Win+R, typewinver, and press Enter. Write down the Windows edition, version and build number shown in the About Windows box. Microsoft’s Store and troubleshooting procedures can differ between builds. - Write down the affected surface. Note whether Store failed to launch, a download stopped, Xbox or a game refused sign-in, Windows Update displayed the code, or an optional feature installer produced it.
- Capture the action that triggered it. For example, record the app name, game, update, or feature you were trying to open, download or install. This tells you what to retest after every change.
- Do not merge separate incidents. If Store and Windows Update each show an error, preserve the exact text from both dialogs. They may have different causes even when they appear on the same PC.

This order reflects two risk controls: start with a context-specific cache reset when Store is the reported surface, and reserve service or component changes for a confirmed code and matching symptom.
Fix the Microsoft Store symptoms
1. Run the Store cache reset
- Save any open work.
- Press
Win+Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
wsresetand press Enter. - Wait while the reset window completes. It can remain on screen briefly without showing a prompt.
- Microsoft Store should reopen when the process finishes. Try the same app download or launch that produced 0x8007422.
wsreset is a targeted Store-cache action. It is not a definition of what the code means, and it will not repair every Xbox, Windows Update or account problem. If Store opens afterward but one download still fails, record the app name and the new message rather than repeatedly running the reset.

2. Use a build-matched Store repair or re-registration procedure
If the reset does not restore Store, use the Microsoft Store repair or re-registration instructions that match the edition, version and build you recorded with winver. Windows labels and supported commands change between releases, so a command copied from an unverified page can target the wrong package or produce a permissions error.

On some Windows builds, the Settings app exposes Microsoft Store under the installed-app list with Advanced options and separate Repair or Reset actions. If those controls are present, read their descriptions before selecting one: Repair is the less disruptive choice, while Reset can remove the Store app’s local data. If your build does not show these controls, follow the current Microsoft procedure for that build instead of substituting a script.
After a repair, reset or re-registration, restart Windows and test one known Store download. A single controlled retest makes it clear whether the change helped.
3. Separate Store failure from game sign-in failure
When Minecraft or another game cannot sign in, open Microsoft Store independently. If Store also fails to launch or download, complete the Store branch first. If Store works normally and only the game reports 0x8007422, the code may belong to the game or Xbox sign-in path rather than the Store cache. Keep the game name, account context and exact dialog text with your notes and use the game or Xbox support procedure for the recorded Windows build.

Fix a Windows Update failure
When the confirmed code is 0x8007422
For a genuine 0x8007422 message from Windows Update, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter supplied for your Windows edition and build. The Settings path and wording vary by release, so open Settings and search for Windows Update troubleshooter or Troubleshoot settings, then select the Windows Update option shown for that build. Let it complete, record any action it reports, restart if requested, and retry the same update.
This branch does not establish that a service is disabled. If the troubleshooter does not help, preserve the exact code, the build number and the update identifier before attempting a deeper component reset or requesting Microsoft support.
When the confirmed code is 0x80070422 instead
Only after you have verified 0x80070422 should you investigate the disabled-service explanation reported in Microsoft support answers.
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update. Check whether its status is stopped and whether its startup type is Disabled. Do not change a service merely because it is not currently running; match the guidance for your Windows build.
- Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and inspect it in the same way.
- If either service is disabled or stopped and your build’s Microsoft guidance calls for it to run, apply that guidance, close the Services console, restart Windows and retry the update.
These checks belong to 0x80070422, not to 0x8007422. If the original dialog really says 0x8007422, return to the affected-surface table instead of forcing this interpretation.

Use system-file checking only when the symptoms justify it
A system-file scan is a diagnostic branch, not a universal response to every hexadecimal code. Consider it when the failure is accompanied by broader Windows instability or when a documented related error points to possible system-file corruption. It is also reasonable after the Store and version-specific troubleshooting paths have failed and you have preserved the original evidence.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt: search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the permission prompt.
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent. Closing the window early leaves the result unknown.
- Record the final message, including whether Windows repaired files or found no integrity violations.
- Restart Windows and reproduce the original Store, Xbox or update action once.
If the scan reports that it could not complete or could not repair files, keep that exact result with your build and error-code notes. Do not infer that 0x8007422 has a specific system-file cause from an inconclusive scan.

Disabling IPv6
A third-party guide lists disabling IPv6 among possible remedies, but the exact-code meaning is unresolved and the recommendation is not official Microsoft guidance. Disabling a networking protocol can affect other applications and connectivity, so it should not be a first-line fix for 0x8007422. Do not make that change while you are still determining whether the problem is Store, Xbox, Windows Update or a mistyped code.

Registry cleaners and generic “net” fixes
Generic claims that a registry or system-setting change repairs every instance of this string are commercial or anecdotal claims, not an official definition. A registry edit or component reset can make recovery harder if the wrong key or package is targeted. Keep the exact code and build, use Microsoft procedures that name your component, and create a recovery option before any advanced change.

Repeated resets
Running wsreset repeatedly, restarting services at random, or rerunning sfc /scannow without recording results does not add evidence. After each action, perform one controlled retest and write down what changed. This prevents a Store cache issue, a sign-in issue and an update issue from being blended into one story.
When the normal branches fail
Escalate with a compact evidence package rather than a bare error number. Include:
- the complete code exactly as displayed;
- the Windows edition, version and build from
winver; - the component that displayed it and the action that triggered it;
- the date and time of the latest occurrence;
- the result of
wsreset, the build-matched Store procedure, the Windows Update troubleshooter orsfc /scannow, whichever you actually tried; and - whether the same account can open Store, download another app, or sign in to another game.
With that information, consider the next branch in this order: a component-specific Microsoft support procedure, an account or permission review when only one account is affected, a carefully documented component reset, or Microsoft support. Stop before a reset if you cannot identify the package, service or data it will change.
A practical decision checklist
- Characters: Is the value exactly 0x8007422, or is it 0x80070422?
- Surface: Did Store, Xbox or a game, Windows Update, or an optional-feature installer display it?
- Build: Did you record edition, version and build with
winver? - Least intrusive action: For Store symptoms, did you try
wsresetbefore services or networking changes? - Evidence: Did you record each result and retest the same action once?
- Escalation: If the issue persists, can you provide the exact code, build and component instead of only saying “net error”?
Following that checklist matters more than guessing what the number “should” mean. The available Microsoft reports connect 0x8007422 to several surfaces, while none establishes one universal fix.
