Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →0x800704D is not listed in Microsoft’s current Windows Update error tables. Treat it as an incomplete, mistyped, or context-dependent code until you copy the full message and code from Windows Update history, an installer dialog, or Event Viewer. Start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the PC, and select Check for updates. If the download still fails, verify power, internet access, administrator rights, free storage, and unnecessary connected hardware before resetting the update cache.
What the 0x800704D code tells you
Windows Update normally displays a complete hexadecimal error, often alongside a message and a KB (Knowledge Base) number. The short string 0x800704D does not appear in Microsoft’s current Windows Update error tables, so it cannot be used by itself to identify one cause or one guaranteed repair. A Microsoft Q&A discussion uses 0x800704D in a media-player file-opening problem and mentions possible input/output or disk conditions, but that context does not establish the code as a Windows Update diagnosis.

That distinction matters when you search for “0x800704D when downloading Windows Update.” A missing digit, a copied line break, or a neighboring status code can send you toward the wrong fix. Before changing services or deleting files, open the place where the error appeared and copy the entire code, its accompanying wording, the KB number if shown, and whether the failure happened during download, installation, or restart.
Prepare the PC before trying a repair
These checks remove common obstacles without changing Windows Update files. Complete them before the cache-reset procedure.

- Connect the computer to AC power. A laptop that sleeps or switches power modes during a download can interrupt the transaction.
- Confirm a stable internet connection. Microsoft describes a stable connection as crucial for downloading and installing updates. If possible, pause large downloads on other devices and retry when the connection is steady.
- Use an administrator account. Service changes and some update repairs require administrative permission. If Windows asks for credentials, use an account with administrator rights.
- Disconnect hardware you do not need. Remove external storage, docks, card readers, printers, and other accessories temporarily. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and power connected.
- Record the current state. Note the Windows edition and build, the update’s KB number, the exact message, and the point at which the process stops. This information is essential if you later need support.
Step 1: run Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter is the official first-line response when an error appears while downloading or installing Windows updates. Use the path for your Windows version.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks to finish and apply any changes it offers.
- Restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter does not insist on a restart.
- Return to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Let the tool complete its checks and accept an offered correction.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The restart-and-check loop is deliberate: the troubleshooter can repair a configuration problem, while the restart reloads services and clears a temporary state before Windows requests the update again.
Check free storage before retrying
An update can download successfully and still fail when Windows needs space to unpack, stage, and install it. Microsoft says a device may need at least the following free space for an operating-system upgrade:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Operating-system architecture | Free space Microsoft specifies |
|---|---|
| 32-bit | At least 16 GB |
| 64-bit | At least 20 GB |
These figures apply to the upgrade requirement described by Microsoft; an individual update can have different working-space needs. Check the internal system drive in Settings > System > Storage and leave more room than the minimum when possible. Remove or move personal files using your normal backup process, and empty temporary files only when you understand what will be deleted.
If the internal drive is too small, Microsoft says a USB drive may be needed. A USB flash drive can provide the extra capacity for the supported upgrade workflow, but it is not a direct cure for 0x800704D. Keep the drive connected as instructed by Windows, do not remove it during installation, and use a drive whose contents you have backed up because setup may require changes to the device.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
If the troubleshooter, restart, and prerequisite checks do not resolve a download that is stuck or repeatedly fails, Microsoft documents clearing the contents of the Windows Update cache. This is an advanced step because it changes a Windows service and deletes downloaded update files that Windows can fetch again.

Stop the Windows Update service
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and select Stop. Wait until the service shows that it has stopped.
Delete only the cache contents
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - If Windows reports that a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped. Do not force-delete a locked file.
Start the service and retry
- Return to the Services window.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Start.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Clearing this folder removes cached download data, not the Windows Update service itself. Windows will recreate the required cache structure and download the update again. A longer first download after the reset is expected because the previous files are no longer available locally.

The download is stuck at one percentage
First verify the internet connection, power, storage, and connected hardware. Run the troubleshooter, restart, and check again. If the same download remains stuck, use the documented cache reset and retry. Record the elapsed time and the exact percentage rather than repeatedly restarting the PC while the update is actively installing.
The download completes but installation fails
Capture the complete code, message, and KB number from Windows Update history or the installer dialog. Confirm the required free space and disconnect unnecessary hardware. Run the troubleshooter again, restart, and retry once. If the failure returns, the full evidence is more useful than the shortened 0x800704D label because installation and download failures can have different causes.
The code appears only in another application
If 0x800704D came from a media player, file-opening dialog, or a different program, do not apply a Windows Update diagnosis to it. Windows error numbers can appear in multiple contexts, and the media-player discussion associated with this string does not prove that disk or input/output trouble is responsible for a Windows Update failure.
The PC reports insufficient space
Free space on the internal system drive first. For the upgrade figures Microsoft gives, target at least 16 GB on a 32-bit system or 20 GB on a 64-bit system. If the device cannot provide that capacity internally, follow Windows’ supported USB-storage prompt. A removable drive enables the space requirement; it does not repair an unknown error code.
The service will not stop or start
Do not delete files while Windows Update is still running. Reopen services.msc, check the service status, and restart Windows before trying the cache procedure again. If the service repeatedly refuses to change state, stop the manual procedure and preserve the exact message for support rather than deleting additional system folders.

Verify the complete error before escalating
Because the shortened code is not in Microsoft’s current Windows Update tables, escalation should include enough context for someone else to reproduce the problem:
- The complete hexadecimal error, including every character after
0x. - The exact Windows Update message and whether it says downloading, installing, or restarting.
- The KB number or update name.
- Your Windows edition, architecture, and build number.
- Whether the troubleshooter ran, whether you restarted, and whether the SoftwareDistribution cache was reset.
- The amount of free space on the internal system drive and whether a USB drive was involved.
- Any related entry in Windows Update history, the installer dialog, or Event Viewer.
This record prevents a support technician from treating an incomplete code as a definitive diagnosis. It also distinguishes a network interruption from a storage, service, or installation-stage failure.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A failed Windows 10 update after the end-of-support date should therefore not automatically be treated as a temporary service glitch.
Recommended Free Tools
| System | Support fact relevant to this problem | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 | Support ended October 14, 2025; free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. | Check whether the PC can move to Windows 11 instead of assuming every failed update will be delivered normally. |
| Windows 11 | The Windows Update troubleshooter is available at Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. | Run the troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates before resetting the cache. |
Whether an individual computer can upgrade depends on its hardware and Microsoft’s requirements. Verify compatibility on the machine before making a migration decision, and back up important files before any major operating-system change.
Official steps versus manual cache reset
| Approach | When to use it | What it changes | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Windows Update troubleshooter | First response to a download or installation error. | Checks Windows Update-related configuration and can apply an offered correction. | It may not repair a problem caused by an incomplete code, unavailable storage, network instability, or a deeper service failure. |
| Restart and Check for updates | Immediately after the troubleshooter or a configuration change. | Reloads Windows services and starts a fresh update request. | It does not remove damaged cached download files. |
| SoftwareDistribution cache reset | Repeated download failures or a stuck download after the first-line checks. | Stops Windows Update, removes cached update contents, and forces a new download. | It requires administrator access and careful service handling; it cannot identify an unverified code. |
| USB storage for an upgrade | The internal drive cannot meet the stated free-space requirement. | Provides supported removable capacity when Windows requests it. | It supplies space, not a repair for the error itself, and must remain connected as setup directs. |
Optional shortcut
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no repair tool fixes every crash or update failure.
Bottom line
Do not assume that 0x800704D identifies a specific Windows Update fault. Verify the complete code and message, run the correct Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check again, confirm power, internet access, administrator rights, hardware connections, and free storage, then reset the SoftwareDistribution cache only if the download still fails. If the code remains unresolved, preserve the full evidence and consider Windows 10’s post–October 14, 2025 support status before deciding whether to continue troubleshooting or move to a supported Windows version.
