Windows error 0x8007045D—sometimes typed as 08007045d—means Windows could not complete an input/output request. The correct fix depends on whether it appeared in Windows Update, Windows 11 Setup, or while copying files. Back up important data first, then isolate the drive, cable, port, installation media, or update component involved.

What error 0x8007045D means

Microsoft identifies system error 1117, hexadecimal 0x45D, as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The longer Windows code is therefore 0x8007045D. The form 08007045d is usually a missing x and an extra leading zero, not a different error.

This is an I/O-path error, not a diagnosis of one named component. The failed request might involve the internal system drive, an installation USB flash drive, an external disk, a cable, a USB port, a storage controller, or software and driver interference. A code by itself cannot prove which part has failed.

Start by recording exactly where the message appeared. A Windows Update failure needs a different sequence from a setup failure or a file-copy failure.

Protect your files before troubleshooting

Do not begin by repeatedly retrying an installation or copying large files. Repeated reads and writes can make an intermittent storage problem harder to manage, and some repair choices can erase data.

  1. Back up irreplaceable files. Microsoft recommends copying important files to a USB drive or using OneDrive before applying update solutions. If the affected drive is intermittently readable, copy the most important documents, photos, project files and credentials first rather than trying to create a perfect clone immediately.
  2. Write down the context and exact code. For an update failure, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the failed update and its code. If the message appeared in Setup or during a file transfer, record the step, device name and whether the operation used USB, a network location or an internal disk.
  3. Keep the computer stable. Plug in a laptop, avoid shutting it down during an update, verify internet access when Windows Update is involved, and use an account with administrator access.
  4. Disconnect nonessential hardware. Unplug USB flash drives, external hard drives, card readers, printers and other accessories. If a laptop is docked, undock it. Leave connected only the keyboard, mouse, display and the storage needed for the current task.
  5. Do not erase or repartition a disk yet. Formatting, deleting partitions or reinstalling Windows can destroy the very data you are trying to protect.

Choose the correct troubleshooting branch

Where the error appears Most useful first action What the result tells you
Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart and check for updates again. Whether the update service or cache can be repaired without changing installation media.
Windows 11 Setup or an in-place upgrade Remove peripherals, update Windows and hardware drivers, and retry with the simplest hardware configuration. Whether setup is being disrupted by removable hardware, outdated software or the installation path.
Copying files, backup or an external drive Stop repeated writes, back up readable files, then test another cable, port or computer. Whether the problem follows the device or follows the connection path.

The “follows the device” test is especially useful. If the same drive fails on another computer and with another cable, the drive becomes more suspicious. If the drive works elsewhere but fails through one port, cable or enclosure, that connection path is a more plausible cause. Neither result is absolute proof, so preserve the data before more testing.

Fix 0x8007045D when it appears in Windows Update

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11 includes an automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, then follow its prompts. If you prefer the Settings route, use Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.

Allow the troubleshooter to complete its checks and apply any suggested repair. Restart the PC even if it does not request one. After restarting, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Test the same update once; do not keep launching retries while other hardware is still attached.

2. Verify the basic update prerequisites

  • Keep the PC connected to AC power, particularly a laptop.
  • Confirm that the internet connection is stable enough to download the update.
  • Use an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them.
  • Remove USB flash drives and external disks that are not required for the update.
  • Close software that could be actively reading or writing removable storage.

These checks matter because an update can fail while downloading, staging or applying files. The code identifies an I/O failure, but it does not identify which stage or device caused it.

3. Reset the Windows Update cache

If the troubleshooter and restart do not help, Microsoft’s manual cache-reset procedure is the next reversible update-specific step:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again.
  5. Return to services.msc, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
  6. Restart Windows, then return to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

This removes the local update cache so Windows can download and stage the update again. It does not repair a failing USB device, cable or internal disk. If the same I/O code returns, move to hardware isolation rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

4. If only one update keeps failing

Record the update identifier shown in Update history, including the date and error code. A failure that follows one update may involve its downloaded package or the storage location used for staging; a failure that affects several unrelated updates points more broadly to the update path or storage subsystem. Keep the backup current before trying an in-place upgrade or other installation method.

Fix 0x8007045D during Windows 11 Setup or an in-place upgrade

1. Simplify the hardware configuration

Shut down the PC and disconnect every nonessential USB device and external drive. Remove USB storage that is not the installation media, unplug hubs and card readers, and undock a laptop. Leave the installation USB connected directly to the computer rather than through a hub. Retry Setup with the fewest possible peripherals.

If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows 11 is installed or the upgrade has completed. The device that brings the error back is a lead for further testing, not automatic proof of failure.

2. Update Windows and hardware software before retrying

Install important Windows updates and available hardware-driver updates before launching the upgrade again. Temporarily remove non-Microsoft antivirus software and outdated applications that can interfere with setup, following each product’s own uninstall guidance. Windows’ built-in protections and your normal security plan should be restored after the installation test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove software at random if you cannot reinstall it or recover its settings. The purpose of this step is to eliminate known setup interference while preserving a route back to your previous configuration.

3. Test the installation media and storage path separately

An I/O error during Setup can come from the installation media, the USB port, the cable or adapter, or the target disk. Recreate the Windows 11 installation media or use a replacement USB flash drive. Try a different USB port, preferably a direct port on the computer, and avoid a hub or extension. If another suitable computer is available, check whether the same installation media can be read there.

These tests are diagnostic. A new USB drive working once does not prove the original drive was defective, and a failure on one computer does not identify whether the port, controller or media is responsible. Change one element at a time so you can tell which change affects the result.

4. Check whether the target disk is readable

If Setup repeatedly fails while accessing the same target disk, test whether that disk can be read from another environment or another computer. First confirm that the files you need are backed up. If the disk is intermittently readable, copy data before attempting installation repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use Setup to delete partitions or format the disk as a test. Those actions are not neutral diagnostics; they can permanently remove personal files and may make later recovery harder.

5. Retry only after the path is stable

Reconnect AC power, confirm that the installation USB is firmly seated, disconnect nonessential hardware again and start Setup. If the code returns at the same point after different media, ports and a simplified software configuration, stop repeated attempts and investigate the target storage path or obtain professional help before changing partitions.

Fix 0x8007045D while copying files or using an external drive

1. Stop writes and prioritize the data

Cancel the copy or backup operation if possible. Do not keep restarting a failing transfer with the same source and destination. If the drive is still readable, copy the most important files in smaller groups to a known-good destination. A second USB storage device can serve as a backup destination when Microsoft’s backup guidance calls for removable storage; it is not a guarantee that the original drive is healthy.

  2. Connect the drive to a different USB port directly on the computer.
  3. Remove hubs, docks and adapters from the path.
  4. Test the drive on another computer.
  5. If possible, test a known-good drive on the original computer and port.

Observe whether the error follows the drive or remains with a particular cable, port or computer. Keep notes about each combination, including whether the drive is consistently readable or only works briefly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Treat a persistent device-specific failure as a warning

If one external drive continues to produce 0x8007045D with a different cable, port and computer, a failing drive or enclosure becomes more plausible. Stop destructive repair attempts and avoid writing new data to it. When the files are irreplaceable or the drive is intermittently readable, professional data recovery is safer than repeated repairs that could alter the remaining data.

If the error appears only with one cable or port and the drive works reliably elsewhere, replace or avoid that connection path. If several different drives fail through the same computer port, the computer’s USB or storage controller path deserves service.

How to decide what to try next

Situation Data risk Reversible next step Escalate when
Windows Update only; files are backed up Usually low for personal files, but keep the backup. Run the troubleshooter, restart, then reset the update cache. The code returns across multiple updates after the cache reset.
Setup fails with several peripherals attached Moderate if the target disk is not backed up. Disconnect hardware, update drivers and retry with one installation USB. It fails with different media and ports at the same point.
External drive fails during a copy High, especially if files exist only on that drive. Stop writes, copy priority files and test another cable, port and computer. The error follows the drive or the drive becomes intermittently unreadable.
Disk has not been backed up High Back up readable files before clearing caches, changing partitions or reinstalling. Readable data is shrinking, the drive disconnects or recovery is urgent.

What the error does—and does not—prove

  • It does prove: Windows could not complete a requested input/output operation.
  • It does not prove: that the internal SSD, a USB drive, a cable, a port or a controller is definitely dead.
  • A useful clue: an error that follows one physical device after controlled tests makes that device or its enclosure more suspect.
  • Another useful clue: an error that disappears after changing only a cable or port makes the original connection path more suspect.
  • A safety rule: no cache reset, setup retry or hardware test is more important than protecting irreplaceable files.

Windows Update troubleshooting is appropriate when the message is confined to update activity. Setup troubleshooting is appropriate when the failure occurs while reading installation media or writing the new system. File-transfer troubleshooting is appropriate when the same code appears during ordinary reads, writes or backups. Keeping those contexts separate prevents a cache repair from being mistaken for a storage repair.

When to stop and seek professional help

Stop experimenting when the affected disk contains the only copy of important data, when it repeatedly disconnects, when reads become slower or less reliable, or when the error follows the disk across another cable and computer. Do not format, repartition or repeatedly write to that disk before deciding whether professional data recovery is warranted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your files are safely backed up and the problem is limited to Windows Update or Setup, continue with the corresponding branch above. If the error returns after the official software steps and controlled hardware isolation, document the exact context, devices tested, cables and ports used, and the point at which the failure occurs. That information is more useful to a technician than the code alone.
