0x80070057 means Windows rejected an update or installation parameter; it does not identify one single fault. Corrupted update files, permissions, and incorrect system configuration are common explanations. Back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, repair system files with sfc /scannow, reset the Windows Update cache, check free space and connectivity, then scan for updates again. If a package says it is not applicable, verify its Windows version, CPU architecture, installation status, and prerequisites before changing anything else.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft uses 0x80070057 for “The parameter is incorrect” in update and installation failures. Its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance associates the code with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. The hexadecimal code is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. The surrounding message, your Windows edition and version, update history, and whether the computer is x86, x64, or ARM determine which check is relevant.

A missing update can have a different explanation even when the code appears nearby. Windows may have installed the package already, the package may target another Windows release or processor architecture, or a prerequisite update may be absent. Treat “not applicable” as a compatibility or dependency question rather than automatically deleting more cache files.

Prepare safely before changing Windows Update

  • Back up important personal files. Copy irreplaceable documents and photos to another drive or a trusted backup location before troubleshooting.
  • Use an administrator account. Stopping services, changing protected folders, and running repair commands require administrator permission. If Windows asks for credentials, use an account with those rights.
  • Record the exact message. Note the update name or KB number, the text shown with 0x80070057, and the date and time. This prevents you from troubleshooting the wrong package later.
  • Keep the computer on stable power. Do not interrupt a repair or restart while Windows is applying an update.

Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Apply any recommended correction, close the troubleshooter, and restart if Windows requests it.

Windows 11 may also offer the Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. If that route is presented on your installation, follow its prompts and allow it to complete before trying another repair.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Accept a suggested fix, restart when prompted, and continue with the checks below if the update is still missing.

The troubleshooter is a first-line diagnostic, not proof that the underlying problem is gone. Continue through the sequence even if it reports that no change was necessary.

Repair protected system files with System File Checker

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter this command exactly, including the space: sfc /scannow.
  4. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Closing it early can leave the check incomplete.
  5. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart Windows before checking for updates again. If it reports no integrity violations, proceed to the cache and compatibility checks.

SFC can correct damaged Windows components that prevent an update from being processed, but the command does not determine whether a particular KB package belongs to your Windows version. A successful scan and a missing update can therefore coexist.

Reset the Windows Update download cache

A damaged download left in the Windows Update cache can cause the same parameter error repeatedly. Microsoft documents clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder as a way to remove corrupt cached update files. Do not delete unrelated system folders.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, find Windows Update.
  3. Right-click the service and choose Stop. Keep the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  5. Delete the items inside that folder. Delete the contents, not other folders elsewhere in C:Windows.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  7. Restart the computer. Windows will rebuild the cache as it downloads update data again.

If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and that no update or restart is still pending. If you cannot stop the service because of permissions, sign in with an administrator account rather than forcing deletion.

Check storage, network access, and the update service

Free space requirements

Microsoft says an upgrade needs at least 16 GB of free space on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB on a 64-bit operating system. These figures are minimum guidance for an upgrade, not a promise that every update will install with exactly that amount. Check the free space on the Windows system drive and remove or move only files you have identified as safe to remove.

Connection and service checks

  • Make sure the computer can reach the internet reliably while Windows Update is checking or downloading.
  • Temporarily disconnect a VPN if it interferes with the update connection, then reconnect it after testing.
  • Return to services.msc and verify that the Windows Update service is running before you scan again.
  • Do not assume that an empty update list means the service worked; a failed connection or an unsupported release can produce the same impression.

Check for updates again and restart

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, choose Windows Update. On Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Allow downloads and installation to finish, then restart if Windows requests it.

Microsoft notes that additional updates can become available after earlier downloads complete. A second scan after the repair and a restart can therefore show packages that were not offered during the first check. Follow the restart request instead of repeatedly pressing Check for updates while a restart is pending.

When an update is missing or says “not applicable”

An update that does not appear, or that reports “The update isn’t applicable to your computer,” needs a package-level check. Use the update’s Microsoft Knowledge Base article and compare its requirements with the machine before attempting a manual installation.

Possible reason What to verify What to do
The package is already installed Review Windows Update history and the installed updates list for the same KB number. Do not reinstall a duplicate package; look for the next update or a different failure message.
Wrong Windows version or edition Compare the KB article’s target release with the Windows version shown in Settings. Use a package intended for the installed release. A package for another release can be correctly rejected.
Wrong processor architecture Check whether Windows is x86 (32-bit), x64 (64-bit), or ARM, and compare it with the package architecture. Download only the architecture that matches the installation.
Prerequisite update is missing Read the KB article’s prerequisites and check whether earlier required updates are installed. Install prerequisites in the stated order, restart when required, and scan again.
Windows 10 is beyond free-update support Confirm whether the computer is still on Windows 10 after Microsoft’s support cutoff. Check eligibility for a supported Windows 11 installation or another supported servicing path instead of treating every missing package as cache corruption.

Do not change the system architecture to make one package fit. Architecture is a property of the installed operating system, and selecting the wrong download will not make an incompatible update applicable.

Check the Windows 10 support date

Microsoft states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” Because that date has passed, a Windows 10 computer in 2026 may be missing expected new updates for lifecycle reasons rather than because its cache is broken. Verify the device’s Windows release and eligibility before spending time repeating repair commands. If the hardware supports it, moving to a supported Windows 11 installation is a separate upgrade decision, not a cache-reset step.

Use a USB drive only when storage or installation media is the issue

Microsoft notes that a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive to run updates. A USB flash drive can provide removable storage or hold Windows installation media when the internal drive cannot meet the space requirement. It does not directly repair 0x80070057, correct permissions, or make a wrong-architecture package applicable.

  • Back up files before using removable media for installation or recovery work.
  • Use a drive with enough capacity for the specific installation media and keep it connected only when Windows asks for it.
  • Do not erase a USB drive containing the only copy of your files.
  • After freeing space or preparing media, repeat the compatibility check and Windows Update scan rather than assuming the drive itself fixed the error.

What to do when the sequence does not solve the problem

The same code returns immediately

Check that SFC completed, the Windows Update service was started again, and the SoftwareDistribution contents were removed while the service was stopped. Then inspect the exact update message and KB number. A recurring code with a package mismatch requires the version, architecture, and prerequisite checks above, not repeated cache deletion.

The update installs but another one is still missing

Restart, run Check for updates again, and review update history. Microsoft says later packages may appear only after earlier downloads finish. If the next package is marked not applicable, treat it as a separate compatibility decision.

You cannot perform an administrative step

Stop and obtain administrator permission rather than bypassing Windows security controls. Advanced procedures can alter protected files or services; an incomplete or unauthorized change can create a second problem that obscures the original update failure.

The computer is on Windows 10 after October 14, 2025

Confirm whether the missing update is one Microsoft still offers for that installation. The end of free Windows Update servicing means that repairing the cache cannot restore updates that are no longer supplied for the operating system’s lifecycle.

Bottom line

Work from least invasive to most specific: back up, run the matching Windows Update troubleshooter, complete sfc /scannow, reset the SoftwareDistribution cache, confirm service status, space and connectivity, then restart and scan again. If the package remains absent or not applicable, its installation status, Windows version, architecture and prerequisites are the decisive checks. On Windows 10, also account for the end of free Windows Update support on October 14, 2025.
