The Windows 10 update error 0x80070057 means Windows encountered an invalid parameter while downloading or installing an update. Record the failed update first, restart the computer, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. If the error survives those steps, reset the Windows Update cache before escalating to Windows 10 installation media.
The sequence below starts with the least disruptive Microsoft-supported actions and progresses toward repair media. It is suitable for a recurring update failure, not a guarantee against a failing disk, incompatible driver, malware, or another hardware or servicing problem.

What 0x80070057 means
Microsoft lists 0x80070057 among Windows Update and upgrade installation failures and describes it as The parameter is incorrect.
The message identifies a failure in the update process, but it does not identify one universal cause. The same code can appear in more than one Windows servicing context, so the failed update, KB number, Windows build, and exact text in Update history matter.

The code does not by itself prove that Windows is infected, that a particular system file is damaged, or that the hard drive has failed. It is a useful starting point for troubleshooting the update pipeline. A one-time download interruption is handled differently from a failure that returns for the same KB after every restart. Capture the details before clearing caches or changing system files.

Before you change Windows Update
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Write down the update name, its KB number if shown, the date, and the 0x80070057 entry. Also record the Windows 10 build shown under Settings > System > About. This information distinguishes a recurring servicing failure from a temporary download interruption.
- Save open work and make sure you can sign in with an administrator account. DISM, SFC, service changes, and installation media require elevation.
- Back up important personal files before using installation media. The early repair steps are designed to preserve your installation, but a later clean-install choice can remove applications and data.
1. Restart Windows and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
A restart clears a pending reboot and reloads update services. It is the least disruptive first test.
- Choose Start > Power > Restart. Do not select Shut down if Fast Startup is enabled and you need a full service reload.
- After signing in, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and allow it to inspect update components. Follow any option it presents to apply a correction.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the same KB installs, the problem was likely temporary. If 0x80070057 returns, continue without repeating the same attempt indefinitely.
Microsoft says the troubleshooter is intended to help when an error code appears while an update is downloading or installing. It may direct you to the broader Windows Update troubleshooting workflow when it cannot resolve the issue itself.
2. Repair the Windows image and protected system files
Windows Update depends on the component store and protected operating-system files. Microsoft’s update-error guidance uses Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) to repair the Windows image, followed by System File Checker (SFC) to check and repair protected files.

Run DISM first
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the command below and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Leave the window open until DISM reports that it has completed. The command targets the currently running Windows installation (/Online) and asks DISM to restore the health of its component store. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.
Run SFC after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when it can. Wait for its final result. A message saying that no integrity violations were found means SFC did not detect a protected-file problem; it does not cancel the need to retry Windows Update if the update state itself is damaged.
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and retry the failed update.
If DISM or SFC reports an error
Record the complete message and the command that produced it. Do not substitute a random DISM switch or delete system directories to force progress. The exact error determines whether the component store, permissions, storage, or another servicing dependency needs attention. You can still proceed to the Windows Update cache reset below, but preserve the recorded message for the next escalation.

3. Reset the Windows Update service and cache
If the image and protected files are healthy but the same update still fails, the local update state may be inconsistent. Microsoft’s workflow stops the Windows Update service, clears the contents of its download cache, starts the service again, and retries the update.
Stop the service
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
net stop wuauserv
Wait for the confirmation that the Windows Update service has stopped. If Windows says the service cannot be stopped, close Settings and any installer windows, restart the computer, and try the command again from an elevated prompt.
Clear the SoftwareDistribution contents
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
- If a file is locked, note its name, close applications that may be using Windows Update, and retry after confirming that
wuauservis stopped.
This removes the local Windows Update download and working state. It does not remove your personal documents, installed applications, or the Windows installation itself. Windows can recreate the working contents when the service runs again.
Start the service and retry
- Return to the elevated Command Prompt and run:
net start wuauserv
- Restart Windows once more.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and retry the specific failed update.
If the same KB fails immediately after the reset, record that result. A repeat failure after a clean cache points away from a simple stale download and toward a deeper servicing, compatibility, or hardware issue.
Which step should you try next?
| Action | Primary target | Disruption | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and Windows Update troubleshooter | Pending reboot, common update configuration problems, or a transient download/install issue | Lowest; no system files or update cache are intentionally removed | You have just seen the code or have not run Microsoft’s automated check |
| DISM followed by SFC | Windows component-store damage and protected system-file problems | Low; commands run against the current installation and require a restart afterward | The troubleshooter does not resolve the error or the failure recurs |
| Stop Windows Update, clear SoftwareDistribution, and restart the service | Corrupted or inconsistent local update state | Moderate; downloaded update data is discarded and must be obtained again | The image and system-file checks finish but the same update still fails |
| Windows 10 Media Creation Tool or installation USB | Repair or replacement of the Windows installation when built-in servicing cannot recover | Highest; backup, edition matching, licensing, and install-choice decisions are required | The supported built-in steps fail repeatedly or Windows cannot complete an upgrade |
4. Escalate with Windows 10 installation media
Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance lists the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool as an escalation option. It can create installation media, including a bootable USB, for a repair or reinstall path when Windows Update itself cannot complete the operation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare before creating or using media
- Back up documents, photos, browser data, and any other files you cannot replace. Keep the backup separate from the Windows installation USB.
- Record the current Windows edition and architecture, and use media that matches the licensed edition. An edition mismatch can prevent activation or leave you with the wrong Windows variant.
- Keep the failed KB number, Windows build, and the exact 0x80070057 entry. The media route is an escalation, not a reason to discard useful diagnostic information.
- Understand which setup option you are choosing. A repair or in-place upgrade path is intended to retain the existing installation when the offered options allow it. A clean install is a different operation that can remove applications, settings, and personal files from the target installation.
Create and use the media
- Obtain the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s Windows 10 download resources and use it to create installation media.
- Start Windows normally and run
setup.exefrom the created media when your goal is to repair or upgrade the existing installation. Read every retention choice before continuing; do not assume that a default selection preserves applications and files. - If setup cannot repair the current installation and you are considering a clean installation, stop and verify the backup, license, edition, and recovery plan first. A clean install is not a routine cache reset.
- After setup completes, apply updates again and check whether the original KB and 0x80070057 entry have disappeared from update history.
Do not buy or use an installation USB from an unknown seller simply because it is labeled “Windows 10 installation USB.” Verify the seller, the authenticity of the media, the edition, and the license terms. Microsoft’s own creation tool is the safer source for media creation, while a separately purchased key or license may have different activation conditions.

Why the fixes are ordered this way
Transient download or reboot state
A restart and the troubleshooter address conditions that can clear without replacing files. If the error appears once and the update installs after a restart, no deeper repair is justified.
Component-store or protected-file damage
DISM works on the Windows component store used to service the operating system. SFC then checks protected files. Running them in that order gives SFC a healthier source for repairs than running SFC first.
Corrupted update-state data
The SoftwareDistribution reset targets local Windows Update working data rather than the whole operating system. It is more disruptive than the troubleshooter because downloaded update content must be obtained again, but it avoids reinstalling Windows.

If the same KB fails after a repaired image and a rebuilt update cache, the cause may not be the cache. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance does not make 0x80070057 a universal diagnosis for a failing disk, incompatible driver, malware, or every other hardware fault. Preserve the exact failure details before moving to installation media or a separate hardware and compatibility investigation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong command window: DISM, SFC, and service commands need an elevated Command Prompt. A normal prompt may return an access-denied result or fail to perform the repair.
- Running SFC before DISM: The recommended sequence is DISM first, SFC second, then a restart and update retry.
- Deleting the wrong folder: Clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionafter stopping Windows Update. Do not remove unrelated folders underC:Windows. - Repeating the same retry without recording results: Note whether the failure occurs during download or installation, the KB number, and any new message. That information determines the next branch.
- Assuming a clean install is a repair shortcut: Installation media offers powerful recovery options, but a clean install has materially greater data and application risk than the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, or cache reset.
- Ignoring edition and licensing details: Media must correspond to the licensed Windows edition. Matching the label on a USB is not enough; verify the source and activation implications.
- Treating the code as proof of malware: 0x80070057 is an update or installation error classification, not a malware finding.
Windows 10 support status after October 14, 2025
Microsoft’s support page states: After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
That date has passed. Consequently, a Windows 10 machine can still display an update failure, but the normal free Windows Update and security-support lifecycle described by Microsoft no longer applies after October 14, 2025. When deciding whether to keep repairing a failed Windows 10 update, include the device’s upgrade options and your organization’s support requirements in that decision.
Quick Recap
Final troubleshooting checklist
- Capture the failed KB, build, date, and exact 0x80070057 entry in View update history.
- Restart Windows and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- From an elevated Command Prompt, run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, thensfc /scannow. - Restart and retry Windows Update.
- If it still fails, stop
wuauserv, clear the contents ofC:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, startwuauserv, restart, and retry. - If the same failure persists, back up your files, verify edition and licensing, and use Microsoft’s Windows 10 Media Creation Tool or installation media with the least destructive setup option available.
- Keep the recorded KB, build, command results, and setup messages for any further support or hardware investigation.
