The title’s 0X080070057 contains an extra zero; Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070057, a general “invalid parameters during installation or update” error rather than a video-specific diagnosis.
Test another video, repair or reset Media Player, update Windows and your graphics driver, then install only the official codec or format extension the file needs. Reinstall Media Player only after those reversible steps fail.

- Open a second video that has played successfully on this PC before.
- Try the problem file in another trusted media player. If it fails everywhere, suspect the file or its format. If it plays elsewhere, concentrate on Media Player.
- Check whether the failure affects one file, one format, or every video. Note the extension, such as
.mp4,.mkv,.avi,.wmv, or.hevc. - If the video is streamed, test a local file as well. A local file working normally points toward the network, account, or streaming service rather than the player’s decoder.
| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Only one file fails | The file may be incomplete, damaged, or encoded with a format the player cannot decode. | Check the extension, obtain a fresh copy, and test the file in another trusted player. |
| Every video fails in Media Player, but another player works | Media Player’s settings, app installation, or Windows integration is more likely than the files. | Repair, then reset, Media Player. |
| Every player fails | Look at Windows updates, graphics drivers, system files, and format support. | Update Windows and the graphics driver, then run the troubleshooter and system checks. |
| Only HEVC or another particular format fails | The required decoder or official extension may be missing. | Identify the format and install its official Microsoft component if one exists. |
Why Media Player reports unsupported encoding settings
A required codec is missing
Microsoft Learn states: “This problem occurs if a codec that’s required to play the file isn’t installed on the computer.” A codec is the software component that decodes the video and audio streams inside a container such as MP4 or MKV. Two files with the same extension can still use different codecs, profiles, bit depths, or audio formats, so the extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
The file is damaged or incomplete
A download interrupted before completion, a partially copied USB file, or a recording that was not finalized can produce an encoding error even when the format is normally supported. Compare the file size with the sender’s original, copy it again from a reliable source, and check whether another copy plays. Do not delete the original until you have verified the replacement.
Media Player’s app state is broken
Custom settings, an interrupted update, or a damaged app registration can prevent otherwise compatible media from opening. Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions so you can try a reversible correction before reinstalling.
Windows or graphics components are stale
Microsoft says graphics drivers are essential for video playback and that outdated drivers may cause playback problems. Windows updates can also contain media components and compatibility fixes. A driver problem can affect hardware-accelerated decoding even when the file and codec are valid.
Fix 0x80070057 in the safest order
1. Record the message and test a known-good file
- Take a screenshot or copy the complete Media Player message.
- Open a video that previously played on the same computer.
- Open the affected file in another trusted player, if available.
- Write down the file extension and whether the video is local or streamed.
These checks prevent you from changing Windows when one damaged download is the only problem. If only one file fails, obtain a clean copy before making system changes.
2. Check compatibility and install pending Windows updates
Microsoft Support recommends checking file compatibility, installing current Windows updates, and checking for missing or outdated codecs. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the offered updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Re-test the same file after the restart.

3. Repair Media Player
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Media Player.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Advanced options.
- Choose Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open Media Player and test both the known-good video and the affected file.
Repair attempts to correct the app without removing your personal media. The wording and menu placement can vary slightly by Windows release, but the Advanced options page is the relevant control.
4. Reset Media Player if Repair did not work
Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Media Player > Advanced options and choose Reset. Microsoft notes that Reset removes custom settings and preferences but does not remove your media files or the library. You may need to choose folders again or restore preferences after the reset.
Test the file immediately after Reset, before adding custom settings or third-party extensions. If playback returns, reintroduce changes one at a time so you can identify a setting that triggers the failure.
5. Update the graphics driver from an official source
Use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates to look for a display-driver update. If Windows does not offer one, use the official support page for the graphics hardware manufacturer or the computer maker. Select the driver that matches your exact Windows edition and graphics model.
- Create a restore point or make sure you have a current backup before a major driver change.
- Close Media Player and other graphics-heavy applications during installation.
- Restart Windows after the driver installer completes, even if it does not insist.
- Do not use a driver package from an unknown download site or a driver meant for a different model.
Try the video again after restarting. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, use the driver’s rollback option in Device Manager > Display adapters > your adapter > Properties > Driver, when Windows makes that option available.

6. Run the Windows Media Player troubleshooter
Open the Windows troubleshooting tools and run the Media Player troubleshooter when it is listed. On some versions, legacy troubleshooters are reachable through Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all; newer releases may expose troubleshooters under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Labels differ by Windows version, so search Settings for “troubleshooter” if you do not see the same path.
Accept a proposed change only after reading what it will modify. Restart Media Player and test the file when the troubleshooter finishes.
7. Repair Windows system files
If multiple Windows components behave abnormally, check for system-file corruption:
- Open Terminal (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent; closing the window early can leave the check incomplete.
- Read the result, restart Windows, and test Media Player again.
System File Checker can repair protected Windows files, but it cannot make an unsupported video format compatible. If it reports that it could not fix some files, record that result and continue with format and app troubleshooting rather than repeatedly running the command.
8. Check for conflicts with other media software
Third-party codec packs, video filters, virtual capture devices, screen recorders, and media utilities can alter how applications select decoders. Temporarily disable or uninstall a recently added media component through its normal Windows uninstall process, restart, and test again. Keep an installer or recovery method available before removing software you may need for work.
Do not install a large “all codecs” bundle as a blind fix. Such packages can introduce conflicting filters, unwanted software, or settings that are difficult to reverse. Install only the specific component required by the identified format and obtain it from an official publisher.

9. Install the official extension for a format that Windows lacks
If the same HEVC video fails while ordinary MP4/H.264 files play, the missing component may be HEVC support. Microsoft identifies the official HEVC Video Extension in the Microsoft Store for compatible HEVC content. Search the Microsoft Store for that exact name, verify that the publisher is Microsoft, and follow the Store’s installation process.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Availability and licensing can vary by Windows edition and region. If the Store does not offer the extension for your system, check the file creator’s export options or use a legitimate player that explicitly supports the format. Do not download a purported HEVC codec from an unverified site.
10. Check the network when only streaming fails
For a web stream, sign in again, test another network, and verify that other sites or services load normally. A local file test separates a network or service outage from a decoder problem. If every local video works but one stream fails, contact the service or file provider with the exact error and timestamp.
11. Reinstall Media Player only as a last resort
Use this step only after Repair, Reset, updates, driver checks, troubleshooting, and format checks have failed.
- Open Control Panel and choose Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features and clear the checkbox for Windows Media Player, if it is listed.
- Confirm the change and restart when Windows asks.
- Return to the same Windows Features dialog, enable Windows Media Player again, and restart once more.
- Install pending Windows updates, open the newly restored player, and test a known-good file before the problem file.
Windows editions differ: some current installations expose Media Player as an app rather than a classic Windows Feature. If Windows Features does not list it, use the Installed apps Repair and Reset controls instead of deleting folders manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the next step by symptom
| Symptom after the first checks | Next action | Why this is the proportionate choice |
|---|---|---|
| One downloaded file fails in every player | Get a complete replacement copy or ask the sender to export it again. | Changing Windows cannot repair missing bytes in one file. |
| All files fail only in Media Player | Repair, then Reset the app. | The issue is isolated to the player and both actions are reversible compared with reinstalling Windows components. |
| All players fail after a Windows or driver change | Check Windows Update history, update or roll back the graphics driver, and run sfc /scannow. |
A shared Windows or display component is more likely than one app preference. |
| Only HEVC fails | Install the official HEVC Video Extension when available, or use a player that supports the format. | The symptom is format-specific and does not justify a broad codec pack. |
| Only online playback fails | Test the network, sign-in, and service in a browser or on another connection. | Local playback evidence points away from the local decoder. |
| The issue remains after Reset and updates | Run the troubleshooter, check system files, remove recent media conflicts, then consider reinstalling. | This escalates from low-risk app changes to Windows component repair in a controlled order. |
Safety checks before changing codecs or drivers
- Keep the original video and a backup copy before converting, deleting, or replacing it.
- Write down the exact extension and, if known, the codec reported by the file’s properties or the application that created it.
- Use Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, or the hardware maker’s official site for components.
- Avoid registry cleaners, random DLL downloads, and codec packs that install several unrelated filters.
- After each change, test the same file and one known-good file. Changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- If the error appears during an installation or update rather than playback, record that context;
0x80070057is a general invalid-parameter code and may require a different installer-specific remedy.
What the code does not prove
The number alone does not prove that the computer is infected, that the video is permanently damaged, or that reinstalling Windows is necessary. It also does not establish that every file needs a new codec. The combination of scope testing, format identification, app Repair/Reset, current drivers, and official format support is what narrows the cause.
Bottom line
Verify that the screen really shows 0x80070057, isolate one file from an all-video failure, update Windows, Repair and then Reset Media Player, update the graphics driver, run Windows troubleshooting and sfc /scannow, and install only the official extension required by the format. Reserve Windows Features reinstallation for the end.
