If an SCCM task sequence reports 0X0070057, first copy the complete HRESULT from SMSTS.log or the Configuration Manager console. Microsoft documents the related code as 0x80070057, “The parameter is incorrect.” It is a context-dependent error, not a single fault with one universal repair. The correct fix depends on whether the failure occurred while installing an application, downloading content, applying an operating system, or authoring an MDT task sequence.
Confirm the code before changing the deployment
The string in the question, 0X0070057, is not the usual eight-digit form documented by Microsoft. A visually similar error can lead to a completely different diagnosis, so do not correct the text from memory. Open the relevant SMSTS.log entry or the error shown in the Configuration Manager console and copy the entire HRESULT, component name, action name, and surrounding message.

- Record whether the action was Install Application, Apply Operating System, a content-transfer action, or task-sequence authoring.
- Note the machine, deployment, task-sequence name, and time of failure.
- Preserve several lines before and after the error; the preceding action often identifies the real failing stage.
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting documentation labels 0x80070057 “The parameter is incorrect.” That wording describes the HRESULT, not the underlying Configuration Manager cause. The same value can be emitted when a volume cannot be resolved, when content processing fails, or when an application deployment type does not meet task-sequence requirements.

An Install Application action is processed in several stages: the task sequence parses the step, policy and WMI data are read, configuration items are evaluated, content is downloaded, the deployment type is enforced, and detection is performed. A failure at each stage leaves evidence in different logs.

| Where the failure appears | What to check first | Primary evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Install Application: parsing or policy | Task-sequence step, policy availability, and local WMI state | SMSTS.log, DCMAgent.log, CIStore.log, CIStateStore.log |
| Install Application: content download | Content location, management-point reachability, BITS and transfer activity | SMSTS.log, CIDownloader.log, DataTransferService.log |
| Install Application: enforcement or detection | Deployment-type command, execution account, unattended behavior, and return code | SMSTS.log plus the application enforcement log |
| Apply Operating System | Partition, volume, drive letter, and target referenced by the step | SMSTS.log and the action details in the console |
| MDT task-sequence authoring | Registered BDD WMI classes and MDT console integration | The authoring error naming a BDD_* class |
Do not treat a log name as proof of the cause. Use the timestamp and action in SMSTS.log to identify the point of failure, then correlate that moment with the supporting log.
Install Application failures: inspect every relevant log
When the failing step is Install Application, start with SMSTS.log and then follow the processing stage. Microsoft specifically identifies these supporting logs for application-install troubleshooting:
AppEnforce.logfor deployment-type enforcement and the installer’s return code.CIDownloader.logfor configuration-item content retrieval.DCMAgent.logfor configuration-management-agent processing.CIStore.logandCIStateStore.logfor configuration-item data and state.DataTransferService.logfor transfer activity and BITS-related failures.
Read the entries in time order rather than searching only for the HRESULT. A download failure that surfaces as 0x80070057 should be investigated as a content or connectivity problem; an enforcement failure should be investigated as an application command, execution-context, or restart-handling problem.

Check the deployment type requirements
The Install Application step supports a deployment type based on Windows Installer or Script Installer. Review the application in the Configuration Manager console and verify that the deployment type used by the task sequence meets all of these conditions:
- The installation runs under the Local System account, not an interactive user account.
- The installer is unattended and does not require a person to click through a desktop dialog.
- The command does not depend on a user profile, mapped drive, or direct interaction with the desktop.
- A restart is reported with standard exit code
3010when the application needs one. This allows the task sequence to control reboot handling rather than treating the restart as an unexplained failure.
After correcting a deployment type, update the application’s available content and policy as appropriate for your environment, then test the task sequence again. Keep the original failure time and the new test time separate when comparing logs.
Separate content errors from enforcement errors
If CIDownloader.log or DataTransferService.log records the last activity before the HRESULT, verify that the device can reach its assigned management point and the content location. Microsoft lists stale or corrupt configuration-item or SDM data, local WMI issues, management-point or database communication problems, BITS failures, network problems, IIS SMS_MP issues, and evaluation errors among possible causes of application-step failures.

These possibilities require different owners. A content-location or management-point problem belongs with Configuration Manager infrastructure and networking; a corrupt local store or WMI problem belongs with the client; a deployment-type command or detection problem belongs with the application package author. Do not replace the application command while the logs still show that content never downloaded.
Apply Operating System failures: validate the target volume
Microsoft documents 0x80070057 during content or download processing when a drive letter does not map to a local hard drive and the requested target cannot be resolved to a valid volume. In an Apply Operating System scenario, inspect the partitioning and volume steps before changing the operating-system image.
- In the task sequence, identify the partition-and-format action that should create the target volume.
- Confirm that the expected partition is created before Apply Operating System runs.
- Check the drive letter assigned by the partitioning step and compare it with the target selected in the operating-system action.
- Verify that the target still exists and is a local hard-drive volume at the moment the action runs.
- Review
SMSTS.logfor the exact drive or volume reference that could not be resolved.
A drive letter visible in one phase of deployment is not, by itself, proof that the same letter identifies the intended volume in the failing phase. The important test is whether the action can resolve its configured target to a valid local volume when it executes.

MDT task-sequence authoring errors: repair the integration
If the error occurs while creating or editing a task sequence and names BDD_UsePackage or another BDD_* WMI class, the MDT classes may not be registered. This is an authoring or integration problem, not an operating-system deployment-volume problem.
- Close all Configuration Manager consoles.
- Open Configure ConfigMgr Integration, the MDT integration wizard.
- Use the wizard to remove the MDT console extensions.
- Run the wizard again to install the MDT console extensions.
- Reopen the Configuration Manager console and retry task-sequence authoring.
Microsoft states that Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is retired. Existing environments can still encounter missing integration classes, but plan any long-term task-sequence design around the support status of the components you retain.

- Local WMI or state: compare the timestamps in
DCMAgent.log,CIStore.log, andCIStateStore.log. A local data or state error points away from the installer command. - Management-point or database communication: correlate policy-processing entries with the time the device contacted its management point. A policy that never arrives cannot be fixed by editing the application command line.
- BITS or transfer: use
DataTransferService.logandCIDownloader.logto establish whether bytes were requested and transferred. - Evaluation: if configuration-item evaluation fails before enforcement, inspect the evaluation and state entries rather than
AppEnforce.log. - IIS SMS_MP or infrastructure: if multiple clients show comparable management-point symptoms, involve the Configuration Manager infrastructure administrator instead of changing one deployment type.
These checks are diagnostic branches, not a license to delete client data or rebuild WMI blindly. Preserve the logs and make one controlled change at a time so the next run can prove whether the selected branch was correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reproduce the problem safely on a duplicate task sequence
Do not experiment first on a production deployment. Microsoft recommends duplicating the production task sequence, adding data-gathering steps when needed, and deploying the copy to a test machine.
- Duplicate the task sequence and clearly label the copy as a test version.
- Change only the step or setting associated with the evidence in the logs.
- Deploy the duplicate to a test device that represents the failing hardware and network path.
- Use the Monitoring workspace’s deployment errors together with client and task-sequence logs.
- Compare the failing action and timestamps with the original run before promoting any change.
A successful test on a duplicate does not prove that every production device is fixed; it shows that the changed path works under the tested conditions. If the duplicate fails at a different stage, retain the original evidence and begin the new stage-specific branch instead of reverting to the first assumption.

| Observed evidence | Next action |
|---|---|
| The code appears during Install Application before content is available | Read CIDownloader.log, DCMAgent.log, and DataTransferService.log; verify policy, content location, management-point reachability, and transfer activity. |
| Content downloads, then enforcement fails | Read AppEnforce.log; verify Windows Installer or Script Installer type, Local System execution, unattended behavior, and exit code 3010 for a requested restart. |
| Apply Operating System cannot resolve a drive or volume | Inspect partition creation, the assigned drive letter, and the target configured in the operating-system step. |
| Authoring names a BDD WMI class | Close consoles, remove MDT integration through Configure ConfigMgr Integration, then run the wizard again to reinstall it. |
| The same failure appears only in production | Duplicate the task sequence, add data gathering, and test on a representative device before editing production. |
Common mistakes that prolong 0x80070057 troubleshooting
- Assuming the code identifies one fix: the HRESULT is shared by multiple Configuration Manager stages.
- Ignoring the exact spelling: confirm whether the console actually reports
0x80070057or another value. - Reading only SMSTS.log: application failures often require the application, configuration-item, content-download, and data-transfer logs together.
- Running an interactive installer: task-sequence application installation must work under Local System without desktop interaction.
- Treating a reboot as an unexplained crash: configure the deployment type to return
3010when a restart is required. - Changing the OS image for a volume-resolution error: first prove that the expected partition and target volume exist.
- Repairing MDT classes while consoles are open: close Configuration Manager consoles before removing and reinstalling the integration.
- Testing directly in production: use a duplicate task sequence and a test device.
When to escalate
Escalate with a focused evidence bundle when the stage-specific checks do not isolate the fault. Include the exact HRESULT, the complete SMSTS.log line and nearby entries, the action name, the relevant supporting log, the deployment and task-sequence identifiers, and whether the issue reproduces on a duplicate test sequence. State whether the failure is limited to one device, one application, one content location, one management point, or one task-sequence branch. This information lets the Configuration Manager, networking, infrastructure, or application owner start at the correct layer.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary.
