How to Fix 0x80070057 During a Windows 10 Upgrade

0x80070057 is a general Windows Update failure code, not a diagnosis of one broken file. Microsoft associates it with corrupted files, permission problems and incorrect system configuration. Work through the repairs in order: back up your files, restart, verify connectivity and free space, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset update data, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, and disconnect hardware that could block Setup. If the upgrade rolls back again, use Setup logs and Microsoft’s free SetupDiag utility to identify the failing phase.

What 0x80070057 means during an upgrade

The code is sometimes typed as “ox80070057,” but the first character is a zero: 0x80070057. Microsoft groups this code with 0x80080005 in its Windows Update error table and lists three broad causes: corrupted files, permission issues and incorrect system configurations. The number therefore tells you that an operation received an invalid or unusable parameter, but it does not identify which component failed. The same code can appear while Windows Update is downloading, staging, validating or applying an upgrade.

That uncertainty is why a single “fix” is unreliable. A damaged update cache needs a different remedy from a nearly full system drive, and a Setup rollback caused by a driver may persist after the cache is reset. The sequence below starts with low-risk actions and moves to administrator-level repairs only when necessary.

Prepare safely before changing Windows Update

Back up important data

Copy documents, photos, browser exports and any other irreplaceable files to a separate drive or another storage location before repairing update components. An upgrade normally preserves personal data, but a backup protects you if recovery media, a failed rollback or a later repair leaves Windows unable to start.

Record the exact failure

Write down the complete message, the point at which the upgrade stops, and whether Windows reverts to the previous installation. A screenshot or a phone photo is useful when the message disappears after a restart. If the code later changes, keep both codes; the sequence can help distinguish a download problem from a Setup-phase failure.

Use an administrator account when required

The troubleshooter can run from a standard account in some configurations, but resetting services, renaming system folders, DISM and SFC require administrator permissions. If Windows asks for credentials, use an account that is allowed to approve administrative changes.

Step 1: Restart and retry the upgrade

Choose Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down followed by a quick power-on. Restarting clears pending operations and releases files held open by update services or installers. After Windows loads, wait a few minutes for startup programs to finish, then open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates or retry the upgrade offered there.

If the same code appears immediately, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Retry. Repeated attempts can leave more incomplete download data in the cache without addressing the original cause.

Step 2: Verify power, internet and free space

Keep the connection stable

Use a reliable internet connection and avoid starting the upgrade while switching between Wi‑Fi networks. On a laptop, connect the AC adapter and leave the computer powered throughout the download and restart phases. A connection that drops during validation can leave an incomplete package that later looks like a file or configuration error.

Check the system drive

Microsoft’s current guidance requires at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit Windows upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum free-space figures, not a promise that every upgrade will succeed with exactly that amount; Windows may need working room for temporary files and rollback data. Check the architecture and available capacity in Settings > System > About and Settings > System > Storage.

Empty the Recycle Bin and remove files you no longer need, but do not delete Windows folders manually. If the internal drive cannot meet the requirement, Microsoft says a USB drive may be needed. A USB flash drive for Windows installation media supplies removable storage for creating or using recovery media; purchasing one does not itself repair 0x80070057.

Step 3: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows 10 includes both an automated Get Help flow and the classic troubleshooter. Try the Get Help automated troubleshooter first if it is offered on your installation. You can also use the documented path:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Select Windows Update and click Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Allow the checks and suggested repairs to finish. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

The troubleshooter can detect service and configuration conditions that prevent an update from starting. It cannot repair every corrupted system file, so move to the cache and component repairs if the code returns.

Step 4: Clear the Windows Update download cache

Microsoft identifies corrupted update-cache files as a common source of update failures. Clearing the cache removes downloaded packages that Windows can obtain again; it does not remove your personal files.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. In File Explorer, enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Select the contents of that folder and delete them. If a file is locked, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  6. Restart Windows and try the upgrade again.

Windows will recreate the working cache as it checks for updates. If permissions prevent deletion, close Settings and File Explorer windows that are displaying update files, verify that the service is stopped, and try again with an administrator account.

Step 5: Reset the update components from an elevated Command Prompt

Use this advanced reset when clearing the cache did not help or when Windows Update services behave inconsistently. Microsoft warns that the procedure requires administrator permissions and comfort with the command line. Run each line separately and wait for the command to report completion before entering the next one.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter the following commands exactly:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
  2. Open Windows Update and retry the upgrade.

The ren commands preserve the old folders under new names instead of deleting them. If a rename reports that the path is in use, stop the listed services again, close other update-related windows, and repeat the command. Do not proceed by deleting random files from C:WindowsSystem32.

Step 6: Repair the Windows image and protected system files

Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, followed by System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy reference.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run this command and wait for it to reach completion:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Microsoft says a successful operation should report wording such as “The restore operation completed successfully” or “The operation completed successfully.” The scan can take a considerable time and may appear to pause at a percentage; do not close the window while it is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow

Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent and displays its result. Close the window only after the final message appears, restart Windows, and run Windows Update again. If DISM reports that it could not complete or SFC says it found files it could not repair, record the exact wording. Those results are useful when deciding whether to use installation media or investigate a Setup rollback.

Step 7: Remove hardware and software that can block Setup

Shut down and unplug nonessential accessories before launching the upgrade again. Disconnect headphones, printers, scanners, speakers, USB storage and other external devices; undock a laptop from its docking station. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and the network connection needed to perform the upgrade. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is working normally.

Third-party drivers and software can also be incompatible with the upgrade phase. Temporarily disable or uninstall nonessential utilities that hook into startup, storage, security or system customization, following the vendor’s documented removal process. Keep a record of what you change so it can be restored. This step is a compatibility test, not a recommendation to remove security protection permanently; restore normal protection as soon as troubleshooting is complete.

If the upgrade succeeds after a device or program is removed, install its current Windows 10-compatible driver or version before reconnecting it. If it fails in exactly the same place with all nonessential hardware disconnected, proceed to log-based diagnosis rather than repeating the same attempt.

Step 8: Investigate a repeat rollback with logs and SetupDiag

A rollback that happens at the same stage suggests a consistent failing phase or component. First record the exact error code and time of the attempt. Then inspect Event Viewer for entries created at that time and review Windows Setup logs, including setuperr.log. The log location and the useful file can vary by the stage reached, so search for entries whose timestamps match the failed upgrade and preserve copies before another attempt overwrites useful detail.

Microsoft’s free SetupDiag tool can analyze Setup information and identify the failing phase or component. Run it after the rollback, read the generated results, and use the named phase to choose the next action. For example, a driver-related result points back to compatibility checks, while a servicing or component-store result supports repeating the DISM/SFC path or using installation media. SetupDiag is diagnostic; it does not automatically repair the underlying problem.

When requesting help, provide the exact code, Windows edition and architecture, whether the machine rolled back, the last successful step, and the relevant SetupDiag or setuperr.log lines. Avoid posting personal file paths or product keys publicly.

Choose the next path when the normal update route still fails

After the steps above, choose the option that matches the evidence rather than trying every method at random.

Option Best fit Data-preservation considerations Space and evidence considerations
Repair the existing Windows Update path The troubleshooter, cache reset, component reset, DISM and SFC complete, and the failure is not tied to a repeatable Setup phase. These repairs target services, cached packages and protected system components. Keep the backup made before starting. Still requires the Microsoft free-space minimum: 16 GB for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit Windows.
Use installation or recovery media The internal drive cannot provide the required working space, update components remain unusable, or Setup logs point to a media or servicing failure. Read every Setup choice carefully. Back up first and do not select an option that removes personal files unless that is intentional. A USB flash drive can provide removable storage for media creation or recovery. The accessory itself is not a repair.
Move to a supported Windows release The PC meets the requirements for another supported release and continued security servicing matters more than preserving the current Windows 10 path. Plan the migration and backup as a separate project; do not assume an in-place attempt will succeed simply because the destination is newer. Use the logs and hardware information collected above to decide whether the machine is suitable for the destination.

Installation media is particularly useful when Windows Update cannot stage files on the internal drive or when the existing update store is damaged. Create or obtain the media through Microsoft’s documented process for the intended Windows edition, verify that the removable drive contains nothing you still need, and keep your backup available during the operation.

Windows 10 support status changes the decision

Microsoft states that “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The computer can continue running, but a successful repair does not restore the ended support lifecycle.

Therefore, if your objective is simply to get one Windows 10 upgrade attempt past 0x80070057, use the manual sequence and logs above. If your objective is a secure, supported operating system in 2026, include migration to a supported Windows release in the decision. Check compatibility, back up data and choose installation or recovery media deliberately rather than treating the error code as proof that a particular component must be replaced.

If you prefer an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, cleanup and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
