0x800700422 is not a confirmed standard Windows error code. The extra trailing digit may be a transcription error for 0x80070422, the documented condition in which the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Confirm the exact digits and complete message in the original dialog, Event Viewer, DISM output, or CBS.log before choosing a fix.
If the intended code is 0x80070422, enable Windows Update and restart the computer. If the feature installation still fails, use Microsoft’s optional-feature cmdlet, repair the component store with DISM and SFC, and provide a matching Windows installation source when the feature files are missing.

First, confirm what failed
The string 0X800700422 does not appear as a standard Windows error code in the Microsoft documentation relevant to optional-feature installation. Windows error codes are easy to mistype because they are commonly copied from a brief dialog or read from a screenshot. Treat the final digit as significant rather than assuming the code is 0x80070422.

What 0x80070422 means
Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as the condition where the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Optional-feature servicing normally uses Windows Update as its default source for files that are not present in the local component store. Therefore, a disabled service can prevent Windows from enabling a feature even when the feature name is correct.
The code does not, by itself, prove that system files are corrupted or that malware is present. It identifies a service-availability problem. Repair the service first, then retry the feature operation; continue to component-store and source repairs only if the retry still fails.
Prepare an elevated servicing session
- Save open work and sign in with an account that has administrator rights.
- Open Start, type PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell or PowerShell, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Keep the exact feature name and error text available. Do not substitute a display label for the feature identifier returned by Windows.
- If the computer is managed by an organization, note whether it uses WSUS, an internal update server, or policy restrictions. Those settings can block Microsoft’s public repair content even when the computer has internet access.
Find the installed feature name
Microsoft’s supported PowerShell interface for optional features is Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature. Microsoft describes it as the cmdlet that “enables or restores an optional feature in a Windows image.” Query the running installation before attempting to enable anything:
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online
Review the output for the feature you need and copy its value in the FeatureName field. The result also shows whether the feature is enabled, disabled, or has a payload removed. A feature can have a different identifier on another Windows edition or release, so do not reuse a name copied from a different computer without checking.
If the command returns an access-denied message, close the window, reopen PowerShell with Run as administrator, and run it again. If the feature is not listed, verify the Windows edition and release and recheck the spelling; an absent entry is not fixed by repeatedly running an enable command with an invented name.
Enable the feature with the supported cmdlet
Once you have the exact identifier, run the online form of the cmdlet:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName>
Replace <FeatureName> with the value returned by Get-WindowsOptionalFeature. The -Online switch targets the Windows installation that is currently running.

Use a local source when the payload was removed
The cmdlet supports -Source for files needed to restore a removed feature. For a mounted Windows installation medium whose matching component files are in the standard side-by-side folder, the pattern is:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -All -Source X:sourcessxs
Replace X: with the drive letter of the mounted media. Add -LimitAccess when Windows must use only that source and must not contact Windows Update:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -All -Source X:sourcessxs -LimitAccess
The source can also be a mounted image, a shared running Windows installation, or a WIM file. WIM sources require the WIM syntax and image index that correspond to your edition; use the syntax documented for your Windows release rather than guessing an index. A source that opens successfully but contains another edition or build can still fail during servicing.
Repair the component store and protected files
If the feature remains disabled or DISM reports servicing errors, follow Microsoft’s documented repair order. Run these commands in the same elevated window, waiting for each to finish:
- Repair the Windows component store:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Check and repair protected system files:
sfc /scannow
/RestoreHealth checks the component store that Windows uses to build and restore features. sfc /scannow then checks protected operating-system files against that store. Progress can pause for a long period at one percentage; do not close the console while either operation is running.
When both commands finish, read their final status. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, the next step is to provide a compatible repair source rather than repeatedly rerunning the same command. If SFC says it repaired files, restart Windows and retry the feature enablement after the restart.

Fix the Windows Update service for confirmed 0x80070422
Use this section only after confirming that the actual code is 0x80070422 or the error text explicitly says Windows Update is disabled or stopped.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, locate Windows Update.
- Double-click it. Set Startup type to Automatic.
- If Service status is Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer. After Windows starts, retry the optional-feature command with the exact feature name.
If the startup-type control is unavailable, immediately resets, or the service cannot start, an administrator policy or another servicing problem may be controlling it. Record the exact message and check the organization’s Windows Update policy before changing policy settings. Do not disable other update services as a workaround.
Choose a repair source when Windows cannot find files
Windows Update is the default source for optional-feature payloads, but Microsoft also supports several alternatives:

- Fresh USB Install With Key code Included
- 24/7 Tech Support from expert Technician
- Top product with Great Reviews
- A mounted Windows installation image.
- A shared, running Windows installation that contains the required files.
- The

Use a source when DISM or the optional-feature cmdlet reports that source files are missing, or when the computer is offline and cannot contact Windows Update. Mount the image or connect the media, identify its drive letter, and point -Source to the appropriate location. Add -LimitAccess when you want DISM to use only that location.

Match the source to the target installation
Source compatibility is the most common reason a seemingly valid media path fails. Microsoft cautions that repair media should be RTM media for the appropriate release and kept current with servicing updates. A source at a lower patch level than the target can lack files required by the installed system.
Before retrying, compare:
- Edition: Home, Pro, Enterprise, or another edition must correspond to the image index or installation source.
- Architecture: x64, ARM64, and other architectures are not interchangeable.
- Language: language-specific components must match the target installation where required.
- Release and build: media from an earlier release or lower servicing level may be rejected.
- Servicing level: keep the source updated closely enough to the target so required component versions exist.
A Windows 11 installation USB can supply the SxS or WIM files Microsoft documents, but check its edition, architecture, language, and build before using it. A physical installer is a source of files, not a guarantee that every feature or error will be repaired.

Troubleshoot the result without making the problem worse
The feature name is rejected
Run the discovery command again and copy the exact FeatureName. Feature display names are not always valid identifiers. Confirm that the feature exists in the installed edition; an identifier from another release may be unavailable.
The command says source files could not be found
Confirm that the media is mounted, the drive letter is correct, and the path really contains the SxS files. Then check source compatibility against the target build. If the source is older or from another edition, obtain matching media rather than forcing the install with an incompatible image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows Update is running but the operation still fails
Having the service started does not repair a damaged component store or supply a missing payload from an incompatible source. Run the DISM and SFC sequence, then retry. If the computer is managed by WSUS or policy, verify that the configured update source is permitted to provide optional-feature content.
DISM or SFC reports failure
Capture the final message and the relevant log entries before making further changes. A DISM source error points toward source selection or compatibility; an SFC result that cannot repair files points toward the component store or source used by DISM. Correct that underlying condition and run the sequence once more.
The feature appears enabled but does not work
Restart if Windows requested it, then verify the feature state with:
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName>
Check that the state is enabled and test the application or Windows component that needs it. If the state reverted, inspect the servicing and CBS logs for the operation’s final error rather than repeating the same enable command without new information.

Verify and document the repair
- Run the feature-state query and save the output showing the final state.
- Open the feature or application that originally triggered the error and perform the operation that failed.
- Record whether a restart was required and whether Windows Update or a local source supplied the files.
- Keep the matching installation media available if the feature may need to be restored again; do not leave an incompatible source configured for future servicing.
The reliable sequence is therefore conditional: confirm the code, identify the feature, repair Windows Update when 0x80070422 is confirmed, repair the component store and protected files, and use a closely matching source when local payload files are unavailable.
