First, verify the code. “0x800700422” is not validated as a canonical Windows error code in the Microsoft references for Windows update and upgrade failures. A single mistyped character can point troubleshooting in the wrong direction. Reopen the original dialog, screenshot, or event entry and copy the value exactly, including every zero and letter.
Once you know the real code and whether it appeared during Windows Update, a Windows upgrade, or another task, start with Microsoft’s matching workflow: run the Windows Update Troubleshooter for update failures, then repair the update cache or system files only when those steps fit the symptom. Reddit can add context, but it should not replace Microsoft’s instructions.

Why “0x800700422” needs verification before you troubleshoot
Windows error codes are exact identifiers. The string 0x800700422 is not listed as a confirmed, canonical code in the Microsoft update and upgrade references covered here, so assigning it a specific cause would be guesswork. Do not assume that a Reddit post with a similar-looking number describes the same failure.

- Open the dialog, Settings page, installer, or event entry that displayed the error.
- Copy the code rather than retyping it. Check for confusing characters such as the number zero (
0) and the letter O (O), and confirm that the prefix is0x. - Record the complete message around the code. Words such as “Windows Update,” “installation,” “upgrade,” “activation,” or the name of an application identify the component that produced it.
- Note your Windows edition and version, whether the computer restarted, and what operation was in progress.
The capitalisation of the hexadecimal prefix is not normally the important part; a missing or extra digit is. If the code came from a screenshot, zoom in and compare it with the text copied from the original dialog.

Find the context in Windows
- For updates, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and identify the update that failed.
- For an upgrade, note whether the failure happened while Windows was downloading, installing, or restarting. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance uses different branches for those stages.
- If neither applies, record the application, device, or installer involved. A code from a printer installer or a game launcher should not be treated as a Windows Update error.
Keep that information with any support request. A corrected code plus its originating component is required for a code-specific diagnosis.
Pick the correct Windows troubleshooting path
Use the symptom, not the unverified number, to select the first remedy. The table below separates the documented Microsoft paths and indicates what each step changes.
| Situation | Start with | What it addresses | Restart or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| A normal Windows Update download or installation failed | Windows Update Troubleshooter | Automatic diagnostics and common update repairs | May request a restart; changes are targeted to update components |
| The troubleshooter did not resolve an update failure | Stop Windows Update services, clear the SoftwareDistribution cache, and restart the services |
Cache or update-state problems | Requires an elevated terminal; a restart is commonly needed |
| Update files or the component store may be damaged | DISM and System File Checker, when applicable to the failure | Windows component-store and protected system-file corruption | Commands can take time; restart after repairs |
| Windows 11 installation or upgrade failed | Microsoft’s upgrade guidance: remove disconnected peripherals, update drivers, check clean-boot interference, and consult the applicable error table | Upgrade conflicts and installation-stage failures | Changes startup and hardware conditions; restore normal startup afterward |
| The code came from another application or device | Identify that product’s component and documentation first | Prevents applying update repairs to an unrelated failure | Varies by component; do not rename caches without confirming ownership |
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft describes the built-in troubleshooter as a first-line diagnostic that can automatically run checks and attempt to fix most Windows Update problems. Run it before making manual cache changes.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the checks to finish. Apply the suggested repair if it matches the update failure, then restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply an offered repair, restart when prompted, and retry the update.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, keep the exact code and message. That result does not validate 0x800700422; it only means the automated checks did not find a repair they could apply.

Reset the Windows Update cache when an update failure persists
Microsoft’s update-repair procedure includes stopping Windows Update, clearing the contents of the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution cache, and starting the service again. This is appropriate for a failure that is clearly tied to Windows Update, not for an unknown application error.
Before you begin
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Save open work and close Settings, the Windows Update page, and installers.
- Do not delete the entire Windows folder. The operation below renames only the update cache directory so Windows can create a fresh one.
Stop the services and rename the cache
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
The first two commands stop the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services. The ren command preserves the old directory under a new name instead of immediately erasing it. If the rename says the folder is in use, confirm that both services reported as stopped, close any update-related window, and try again from the elevated terminal. If SoftwareDistribution.old already exists, use a different backup name such as SoftwareDistribution.old2.
Retry and clean up only after success
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Allow Windows to rebuild the cache and attempt the update.
- After the update succeeds and you have confirmed that no rollback is needed, you may remove the old renamed folder from File Explorer. If the update still fails, keep it until troubleshooting is complete so you have a reversible copy.
If a service refuses to stop, access is denied, or the error comes from a non-update program, stop this procedure. Those symptoms indicate that the cache reset is not the right next step.

Repair Windows components and protected files
For applicable Windows Update failures, Microsoft documents using Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) to repair the component store and protected system files. Run them from an elevated terminal and let each command finish; interrupting a repair can leave the operation incomplete.
Run DISM
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM checks the running Windows image and attempts to restore component-store health. The progress percentage can pause for an extended period. Wait for a completion message before closing the window or restarting.
Run System File Checker
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows, then retry the update.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, found corrupt files it could not repair, or could not perform the requested operation. Save that exact result. A message saying that some files could not be repaired is a reason to review the broader Microsoft repair guidance, not evidence that the unverified code has a known meaning.
If the failure happens during a Windows upgrade
An upgrade is different from a routine monthly update. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance calls out several conditions that can interfere with installation:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Remove disconnected peripherals
Disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, storage devices, and other peripherals before retrying. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and hardware required to operate the computer. Reconnect devices after the upgrade completes.
Update device drivers
Obtain current drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows’ normal update channels, especially for storage, graphics, network, and chipset devices. A driver step belongs in the upgrade workflow; it is not a reason to run a driver utility when the verified failure is a normal Windows Update cache problem.
Check clean-boot interference
Background services and startup applications can interfere with an upgrade. Microsoft’s guidance includes checking for clean-boot interference. If you use a clean boot, record the original startup configuration and restore normal startup after testing so that security and productivity software load normally.
Use the applicable Microsoft error table
Do not map 0x800700422 to a row merely because the characters look close. Use the exact corrected code from the installer and the stage at which the upgrade stopped. Microsoft’s upgrade page explains that many installation errors can be fixed with a few local steps, but the remedy depends on the actual code and condition.
What to do when it is not a Windows Update or upgrade error
If the verified message came from an application, device installer, activation screen, or another Windows component, do not clear SoftwareDistribution or run update-specific repairs by default. Return to the originating program, capture its complete message, and consult documentation for that component. The absence of a matching entry in Microsoft’s update references means only that the code has not been established there; it does not prove that the underlying application is harmless or broken.

Event Viewer can preserve useful context. Open Event Viewer, inspect Windows Logs > Application or System, and look for an entry at the same time as the failure. Record the event source, event ID, and complete text, while removing usernames, email addresses, product keys, and other sensitive information before sharing it.
How Reddit can help without replacing Microsoft support
Reddit is useful for finding patterns, terminology, and reports from people who saw the same corrected code. It is not an authoritative error-code catalogue. The official r/microsoft support discussion explains that Microsoft Support handles Windows, Office, account, device, and Store issues, and that sensitive details may be moved to private messages.
Prepare a useful post
- Quote the exact code and surrounding message from the original dialog.
- State whether the operation was a Windows Update, a Windows upgrade, or another installer.
- Include the Windows version and the update or upgrade stage.
- List the steps already attempted and the resulting messages from the troubleshooter, DISM, or SFC.
- Remove license keys, email addresses, device serial numbers, local usernames, and screenshots containing personal data.
Evaluate replies
- Prefer advice that points to Microsoft documentation and explains why it fits your context.
- Be cautious with registry edits, scripts copied without explanation, downloads from file-sharing sites, and instructions to disable security protections permanently.
- Do not run a command that deletes or renames a directory until you know which Windows component owns it and have a recovery path.
- Test one change at a time and record whether the error, code, or stage changes.
If several replies assume a different code, stop and verify the original dialog again. A popular answer to a similarly shaped number can make the diagnosis less reliable.
When to escalate
Escalate to Microsoft Support or the relevant software or hardware vendor when the corrected code still fails after the matching documented steps, when DISM or SFC cannot complete, when Windows repeatedly rolls back an upgrade, or when the failure affects sign-in, activation, data access, or multiple devices. Provide the exact code, complete message, Windows version, update or upgrade identifier, timestamps, and the results of each step. This gives support a reproducible starting point instead of the unverified string alone.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache files, and app-crash logging. It also includes privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, and a file shredder. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
