If Windows shows 0X800700422, first copy the code again from the original message. That nine-digit hexadecimal string does not appear in Microsoft’s documented Windows error tables. It is commonly a transcription of 0x80070422, the documented ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED condition. For 0x80070422, the primary repair is to enable the Windows Update service, set it to start automatically, restart the computer, and check for updates again.
Do not change services, the registry, or system files until you have verified the exact value. The steps below separate the documented service problem from corruption and software interference, so you can escalate without applying unnecessary changes.

Verify the hexadecimal code before changing anything
Windows error codes are easy to mistype because a single missing or extra digit can identify a different problem. The supplied value, 0X800700422, has nine hexadecimal digits after the prefix and is not listed in the Microsoft error references reviewed for Windows Update. The closest documented code is 0x80070422, which Microsoft describes as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED.
- Reopen the original dialog, installer, or Windows Update history entry.
- Copy the code exactly, including every digit. Uppercase and lowercase letters do not change the value, but omitted digits do.
- If the message came from an installer, copy the value from that installer’s log as well. If it came from Windows Update, check the update history and the accompanying text.
- Proceed with the service procedure only when the value is
0x80070422or the message explicitly says that Windows Update is disabled or cannot currently check for updates.
If the verified value is different, do not assume that the instructions for 0x80070422 apply. Search for that exact code in Microsoft’s current Windows documentation or use the wording of the associated message to choose a different repair path.

What 0x80070422 means
0x80070422 maps to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In the Windows Update context, the Windows Update service is stopped or configured not to run. Without that service, Windows cannot perform the normal update check, download, or installation workflow.
Typical wording includes “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates” or “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” The code does not, by itself, prove that system files are corrupted, that malware is present, or that an update package is defective. Start with the service state rather than deleting update files or editing the registry.
Choose the least-invasive repair first
| Option | What it addresses | Administrative rights | Internet or media | Risk and role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Services console | A disabled or stopped Windows Update service | Usually required to change startup type or start the service | Not required to change the setting; internet is needed to check for updates afterward | Low and reversible; primary repair |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Configuration and update-process problems that remain after the service check | May request elevation | Often useful with an internet connection, depending on Windows version | Diagnostic and automated repair |
| Clean boot | Interference from security software or another startup process | Administrator account recommended | Not required to perform the diagnostic boot | Diagnostic; services and startup items must be restored afterward |
| DISM and SFC | Windows component-store or protected system-file corruption | Required; run from an elevated terminal | DISM may need access to Windows repair sources | Repair operation; restart afterward |
| Installation or recovery media | Upgrade, recovery, or installation work when normal servicing cannot proceed | Required for the chosen recovery action | Requires prepared Microsoft installation media; a small-drive device may need a USB drive during an update or upgrade | Escalation; the USB drive is not a direct service repair |
Fix 0x80070422 in Services
This is Microsoft’s first-line sequence for the documented code. Use an administrator account, because a standard account may be able to view the service but not change its startup configuration.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one. - In the Services console, scroll to Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, and the service may be shown as wuauserv in technical diagnostics.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- On the General tab, open Startup type and select Automatic.
- Read the Service status line. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK. If Windows reports that the change was denied, sign in with an administrator account and repeat the procedure.
- Restart the computer. A restart ensures that the service configuration is loaded in a clean session rather than relying on the current session’s state.
- Open Settings, choose Windows Update (or, on some Windows 10 builds, Update & Security followed by Windows Update), and select Check for updates.
If the update check succeeds, no further repair is necessary. Leave the startup type at Automatic so Windows can start the service when update tasks require it. If the service starts but the same code returns after a restart, continue with the diagnostic steps instead of repeatedly toggling the setting.
If Windows Update will not start or will not stay running
Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends the Windows Update troubleshooter when enabling the service does not hold or the update check still fails. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, locate Windows Update, and select Run. On Windows 10, the corresponding controls are generally under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot; labels can differ by release.
Allow the troubleshooter to complete its checks, apply a proposed correction only if it describes the Windows Update problem, and restart if requested. Record any message it produces. A new code or a message naming damaged files is more useful for choosing the next step than rerunning the same service change.

Check for process interference with a clean boot
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance notes that security software or another startup process can interfere with setup and update activity. A clean boot starts Windows with only essential Microsoft services and startup components, helping you determine whether a third-party process is involved.

- Select Disable all for the remaining services, then select Apply.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup applications listed there, then close Task Manager.
- Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
- Try Windows Update again. If it works only in the clean-boot state, re-enable the disabled items in small groups and restart between tests until the interfering application or service is identified.
- When testing is complete, return to
msconfig, choose Normal startup (or restore the original selections), re-enable the startup applications, and restart again.
Do not leave the computer permanently in a diagnostic boot unless a technician has instructed you to do so; it can prevent normal applications and services from loading.
Repair component or system-file corruption when the evidence points there
If the troubleshooter reports corruption or missing component files, Microsoft documents repairing the component store with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), followed by System File Checker (SFC). These commands are not a guaranteed cure for every 0x80070422 case; use them when the symptoms or diagnostics point to damaged Windows components.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu. Approve User Account Control.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish before entering the next one:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - After DISM completes, run:
Sfc.exe /Scannow - Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent. Do not close the terminal while it is checking protected files.
- Restart Windows and run Windows Update again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies repair files; SFC then checks protected system files against that store. If either command reports that it could not complete, keep the exact result for the next support step rather than repeating it indefinitely.

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance recommends removing nonessential external hardware when another device or driver may be interfering with setup. Disconnect external storage, docks, printers, and other accessories that are not required for the update, then retry after restarting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Devices with very little free space may require a USB flash drive during an update or upgrade. Prepare the drive through Microsoft’s official Windows installation-media workflow and follow the instructions for the specific edition and recovery or upgrade path. Capacity, formatting, and compatibility requirements depend on that path, so a USB drive should be treated as supporting media rather than a universal fix.
Best Value
Installation media is appropriate when Windows needs a repair, recovery, or upgrade route that cannot run from the existing installation. It does not, by itself, re-enable a disabled Windows Update service. Verify the code and complete the service procedure before investing time in media creation.
Common mistakes and safer recovery choices
- Skipping verification: Applying a fix for
0x80070422to an unverified nine-digit value can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction. - Changing the wrong service: Select the entry named Windows Update, not a similarly named update, transfer, or security service.
- Forgetting elevation: If Startup type cannot be changed or Start is unavailable, sign in with an administrator account rather than forcing the change through the registry.
- Repeating a failed toggle: If the service returns to Disabled after a restart, use the troubleshooter and clean-boot test to look for a policy or process interference.
- Running repair commands in a non-elevated window: DISM and SFC require an administrator terminal; an ordinary command prompt may return an access error.
- Leaving a clean boot enabled: Restore normal startup after testing so ordinary applications and services load as intended.
- Removing external hardware unnecessarily: Disconnect only nonessential accessories during update or upgrade troubleshooting, and reconnect them after the test.
- Assuming a USB drive repairs the code: Installation media supports recovery or upgrade work; it is not a direct cure for a disabled service.
- Disabling security software permanently: A clean boot is a temporary diagnostic state. Restore normal protection and startup settings after identifying the conflict.
Use this decision path after each attempt
- The code is still unverified: stop and copy it from the original dialog or log.
- The verified code is 0x80070422 and Windows Update is Disabled or Stopped: set Startup type to Automatic, start the service, restart, and check for updates.
- The service starts but the error returns: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then perform a clean-boot test for third-party interference.
- Diagnostics mention corruption or missing files: run DISM followed by SFC in an elevated terminal, restart, and test again.
- Setup still cannot proceed or storage is very limited: remove nonessential hardware and consider Microsoft installation or recovery media. Treat the USB drive as an escalation aid, not as the service repair itself.
This sequence keeps each intervention tied to a plausible cause: service configuration first, interference second, component repair when indicated, and installation media only for recovery or upgrade scenarios.
