0x800700 is incomplete. The final hexadecimal digits identify the actual Windows error, and an optional setup suffix identifies the phase and operation that failed. Windows therefore cannot be repaired reliably from the prefix alone. First capture the complete code and phase from Windows Update history or Windows Setup logs. If the complete code is 0x80070070, Microsoft maps it to insufficient disk space; otherwise, the correct remedy depends on the final digits and the setup evidence.
What the 0x800700 prefix means
Codes beginning with 0x800 are generally formatted operating-system errors. They are not unique to a Windows 10 upgrade, so the prefix does not tell you whether the cause is a full drive, a missing file, denied access, a driver rollback, a corrupt update cache, or a process that stopped unexpectedly.

Microsoft explains that the first part distinguishes the error family, while the final four hexadecimal digits identify the underlying Win32 error. Windows Setup can append an additional phase and operation suffix. That suffix can change the diagnosis: the same underlying error may occur during the initial compatibility check, SafeOS, the first reboot, or the second-boot migration stage.

Capture the complete code and setup phase
Check Windows Update history
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Update & Security and open Windows Update.
- Select View update history.
- Expand the failed feature update and copy the entire hexadecimal result, including any text after the main code.
Do not rely on a notification that displays only 0x800700. Record whether the failure is listed as a feature-update installation, a restart failure, or a rollback.

Read Windows Setup logs
For an in-place upgrade, inspect these files:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.logcontains setup errors.C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.logrecords setup activity and often shows the operation immediately before the failure.
Search the logs for 0x800700, Error, Rollback, and the phase name. The last error before rollback is usually more useful than the first generic message.
Use SetupDiag when the log is difficult to interpret
Microsoft’s SetupDiag utility analyzes Windows upgrade logs and reports the rule that matched the failure. Run it after the failed attempt, save its result, and use the reported code and phase to select a remedy. Keep the original logs; a later retry can overwrite or add files that help explain what changed.
Event Viewer and C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log can provide additional evidence when the failure involves servicing or protected system files. These records are supporting evidence, not a reason to apply every possible repair at once.
Use the code and phase to choose a safe remedy
| Evidence | Likely direction | Remedy risk |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80070070 or a log message saying the drive is full | Insufficient storage on the Windows or system-reserved volume. | Low when you remove temporary data and unused apps; higher if you alter partitions. |
| Missing-file or access-related final digits | Damaged update files, permissions, or a blocked setup operation. | Start with the troubleshooter, cache reset, and system-file checks. |
| Driver rollback or device operation in the suffix | Incompatible or damaged hardware driver. | Update or remove only the identified driver; disconnect unnecessary devices. |
| Failure during SafeOS, first boot, or second boot | Preboot driver, encryption/security software, boot configuration, or migration process. | Remove blockers and use a clean boot before considering partition changes. |
| Process stopped or timeout evidence | A background process, service, or security product interrupted Setup. | Use a clean boot and temporarily remove non-Microsoft blockers identified by the logs. |
Fix 0x80070070: free enough space for Windows 10
Microsoft’s current upgrade guidance lists 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum free-space figures for the upgrade process, not the total capacity of the drive. Setup also needs working space for downloaded files, temporary files, rollback data, and the previous Windows installation, so leaving additional margin is prudent.
Check the Windows drive
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Check the free space on the drive containing Windows, normally
C:. - Select Temporary files. Review each category and remove only items you no longer need. Keep Downloads unchecked unless you have reviewed its contents.
- Open Apps or Apps & features, sort by size, and uninstall applications you no longer use.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and move personal files to another drive or a backed-up external location.
- Restart Windows, check the free-space figure again, and retry the upgrade.
On a small-capacity device, Microsoft says a USB drive may be needed to provide temporary storage during the upgrade. Connect it before restarting Setup and follow the prompt; do not remove it while files are being copied.
Check the System Reserved partition only when logs point there
A setup message can identify the System Reserved partition rather than the main Windows volume. Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management. Confirm which partition Setup names and whether it is nearly full. Do not delete, format, or resize a system partition as a first response: an incorrect change can make Windows unbootable. Back up important files and use partition changes only when the log specifically establishes that the partition is the constraint.
Run Windows Update’s built-in repair path
Start with the troubleshooter
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and apply its recommended repairs.
- Restart the computer, return to Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
The troubleshooter is most useful when the complete code points to update detection, services, or a damaged cache. It will not turn an incomplete 0x800700 prefix into a diagnosis.

Reset a corrupted update cache
If logs indicate damaged or incomplete update files, reset the cache from an elevated Command Prompt. Right-click Start, choose Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and run:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Close the window, restart Windows, and check for updates again. If a ren command reports that a folder is in use, verify that the corresponding service stopped before continuing. Windows recreates the renamed folders; previously downloaded update files may need to be downloaded again.
Repair protected system files
When the complete code or CBS.log points to corrupted Windows components, run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, read the result, and restart before retrying the upgrade. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, keep the CBS log and use the exact failure details to guide the next step rather than repeatedly running the same command.

A phase suffix that names a device, driver, boot operation, or rollback points away from simple disk cleanup.
Disconnect unnecessary hardware
- Shut down and unplug nonessential USB drives, printers, scanners, cameras, hubs, Bluetooth adapters, and specialty peripherals.
- Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the storage device containing Windows connected.
- Retry the upgrade. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows 10 finishes.
Update or remove the identified driver
Open Device Manager, locate the device named in SetupDiag or the setup log, and check its driver properties. Install a current driver from the device manufacturer’s official support channel, or uninstall the device only when the log identifies it and you have a recovery path. Restart after the change and test the upgrade again.
Do not remove unrelated drivers simply because the error begins with 0x800700. The final digits and phase must connect the driver to the failure.
Try a clean boot for background conflicts
- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and run the upgrade.
- After testing, return to
msconfigand Task Manager and restore normal startup settings.
Microsoft identifies third-party antivirus, non-Microsoft disk-encryption software, unused system disks, and background processes as possible blockers in particular setup phases. Temporarily remove or disable only the product implicated by the logs, follow its vendor’s removal instructions, and restore protection after the upgrade attempt. Never leave a computer unprotected longer than necessary.
Interpret failures by Windows Setup phase
Downlevel or compatibility stage
This stage runs inside the existing Windows installation. Space shortages, incompatible applications, blocked drivers, and damaged update files are common directions. Resolve the complete code, free space if required, disconnect peripherals, and reset the update cache before retrying.
SafeOS stage
SafeOS runs before the new Windows installation takes over. Storage, boot-critical drivers, encryption filters, and external devices can prevent the transition. The phase suffix and SetupDiag result should determine whether you update a driver, temporarily remove non-Microsoft encryption, or disconnect hardware.
First-boot stage
At first boot, Windows loads the new installation and drivers. A rollback associated with a device driver or security filter calls for removing that specific blocker and retrying, not for repeatedly clearing the update cache.
Second-boot or migration stage
This stage migrates settings, applications, and devices. A clean boot, removal of unused hardware, and investigation of the named application or driver are safer first steps than changing partitions or deleting user data.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not treat every 0x800700 result as 0x80070070. Only the complete code establishes a disk-space diagnosis.
- Do not delete
C:$WINDOWS.~BTor other setup folders before saving the logs; doing so can remove the evidence needed to identify the failure. - Do not resize or format the System Reserved partition without a verified backup and log evidence.
- Do not run multiple registry cleaners or unrelated repair utilities at the same time. A changed system makes the next failure harder to interpret.
- Do not repeatedly retry an upgrade while a driver, encryption filter, or third-party security service is still identified as the blocker.
Final manual checklist
- Record the complete hexadecimal code from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Save
setuperr.logandsetupact.logfromC:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanther, and run SetupDiag if the cause is unclear. - If the code is 0x80070070, meet the 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) free-space guidance, with extra working margin.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the cache when logs indicate corruption, and run
sfc /scannowfor system-file corruption. - Disconnect unnecessary peripherals, address the named driver, and use a clean boot when a background process or security product is implicated.
- Retry only after the evidence-based change, so you can tell which action affected the result.
