Verify the original message before changing anything

This code identifies a Windows Update service that is not running or is configured not to start. Windows Update cannot download or install updates while that service is stopped. The first repair therefore changes the service startup setting and starts the service; it does not begin with system-file replacement.

What the first repair changes
- Service state: the Windows Update service is set to start automatically and is started immediately if it is stopped.
- Risk: low and normally reversible; you can return the Startup type to its previous value if a managed computer requires a different policy.
- Permissions: changing a service generally requires an administrator account or administrator approval.
- Scope: appropriate for documented
0x80070422; it does not prove that a different error has the same cause.
Fix 0x80070422 through Services
Use this sequence on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Do not skip the restart: it confirms that the new startup setting survives a full boot.
- Open the Services console. Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks for administrator permission. - Open Windows Update properties. In the Services list, locate Windows Update, then open its Properties. Selecting the exact service matters; do not alter similarly named services.
- Set automatic startup. In the Startup type menu, choose Automatic. This tells Windows to start the service during normal startup instead of leaving it disabled or stopped.
- Start it now. Check the Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start. If Windows returns an error, note the wording and number before closing the dialog.
- Save the change. Select Apply, then OK. If the Start button is unavailable or the setting immediately changes back, the computer may be controlled by policy or another service problem.
- Restart Windows. Use the normal Restart command rather than simply closing the Services window.
- Try the update again. Open Windows Update, select the option to check for updates, and allow the operation to complete. If it installs successfully, no component reset is needed.
If the service will not start
Do not assume that a failure to start proves malware or file corruption. Capture the exact Windows message, whether the Startup type remains Automatic, and whether the status returns to Stopped. Those details distinguish a permissions or dependency problem from a damaged update store. On a work-managed PC, ask the administrator whether policy intentionally disables the service before changing it again.

Reset Windows Update components when the service fix is not enough
If Windows Update is set to Automatic, starts without an error, and the same update still fails, the cached update components may need to be reset. Microsoft provides a Windows Update troubleshooter for the installed Windows edition; run that troubleshooter first when it is available, then retry the update.
Use the troubleshooter safely
- Open the Windows Update troubleshooting option provided for your Windows 8 or 8.1 edition.
- Let it inspect the update service and update components. Read each proposed change before accepting it.
- Allow the tool to complete, restart if it requests one, and check Windows Update again.
- Keep the troubleshooter’s result or any error text. A report that the service is already running points away from repeating the same Services step.
When a component reset is justified
A reset is appropriate when the service is healthy but the update cache or component registration is preventing installation. It changes cached or registered update data rather than merely changing service state. Use Microsoft’s documented reset procedure for the exact Windows 8/8.1 edition, follow its order, and restart before testing again. Use DISM and SFC only for corruption-related symptoms
0x80070422 by itself does not mean that protected system files are corrupt. Escalate to the servicing tools when Windows reports component-store corruption, protected-system-file errors, or a different documented code that points to corruption. Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt, then restart.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt by choosing the administrator option when launching Command Prompt and approving the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the image-repair command and wait for it to finish:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth- Run System File Checker:
Sfc.exe /Scannow- Restart Windows after both commands complete, then check Windows Update once more.
Why the order matters
DISM repairs the Windows component image that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. These commands can take time and may appear to pause; do not close the elevated window merely because progress is slow. They are escalation tools, not evidence that the original malformed code has a file-corruption meaning.

Common dead ends and how to avoid them
Do not add zeros or remove zeros from memory
Error codes are easy to mistype. Searching for a guessed variant can lead to instructions for another failure. Copy the value from Windows Update history and compare it with Microsoft’s documented tables before selecting a remedy.

Do not disable security software as a first response

Do not use a reset script for the wrong Windows edition

Seek assistance from the computer’s administrator or Microsoft support channels when the service setting is locked by policy, the Start operation returns a new service-specific error, or DISM and SFC report failures that remain after a restart. Provide the Windows edition, the exact update KB number, the copied error text, and the command results. That information is more useful than reporting only that “Windows Update failed.”
