Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows 8 shows 0x80070057 with the message “The parameter is incorrect.”, the code is reporting that a particular operation received a value it could not use. It is not one single Windows 8 failure with one universal repair. The operation that produced it—setup, BitLocker, a network-share permission check, System Restore, or something else—determines the safe fix.
The title of this guide contains an extra zero: Microsoft documents the code as 0x80070057, not 0X800070057. Correcting the spelling when you search will lead you to the relevant Windows documentation and troubleshooting steps.

Identify where 0x80070057 appeared
Do not start by deleting registry values, repartitioning a disk, or downloading replacement DLL files. First write down the exact screen, wizard, or command that displayed the error. The same hexadecimal result can arise from unrelated components, and a fix for one context can damage another.

| Where the error appears | First response | Configuration changed? | Windows applicability and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows setup, upgrade, or installation | Disconnect unnecessary hardware, check drivers, review the setup error table, and isolate interfering background software. | Usually no; it is primarily an isolation and compatibility check. | Applies to the setup or upgrade scenario. Generally low risk if you leave security software and normal startup restored afterward. |
| BitLocker enablement | Inspect the operating-system disk for a separate active system partition before attempting any partition preparation. | Potentially yes; creating or changing a system partition changes boot configuration. | Use the BitLocker-specific procedure. Highest risk of the listed paths because an incorrect partition change can affect booting. |
| Effective Access on a network share | Map the UNC share to a drive letter and run the check through that mapped path. | Only a drive mapping and, if applicable, credentials. | The documented server workaround concerns Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2; it is not stated as covering Windows 8. |
| System Restore | Retry in Safe Mode, then use a clean boot to isolate a service or startup conflict. | Startup settings are changed temporarily and must be returned to Normal Startup. | Diagnostic and normally reversible, but restore points can change system files and settings when a restore succeeds. |
| Another application or administrative task | Record the operation, complete text, logs, and recent changes before choosing a scenario-specific remedy. | Do not change configuration until the failing component is known. | No universal command sequence is established for this category. |
The table is a triage guide, not a promise that every occurrence belongs to one of these cases. If the message appeared in a different wizard, keep the exact wording and stop before applying a BitLocker, network, or Restore procedure.

Prepare Windows 8 before making a change
Protect recoverability
- Back up documents and any files created since your last known-good restore point. If the machine uses BitLocker, make sure you can locate the recovery key before changing disk or boot settings.
- Record whether the installation is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. A Microsoft update that addresses one network-share case is explicitly for Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2, not Windows 8.
- Take a photograph or written note of the exact error, the step immediately before it, and any error number shown in a secondary dialog. “The parameter is incorrect” without the operation is not enough to select a repair.
Separate a repeatable error from a one-time interruption
Restart once and repeat the same operation only if doing so does not alter a disk, install state, or restore point. If the failure returns at the same step, record that step. If it disappears, leave the system unchanged and watch for recurrence rather than performing invasive cleanup.
Fix 0x80070057 during Windows setup or an upgrade
Microsoft’s setup guidance treats this code as a possible compatibility or interference problem. Work through the checks in order, changing as little as possible.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals. Shut down the computer and unplug external storage, card readers, printers, phones, hubs, and other USB devices that are not required to complete setup. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and installation media or device the procedure needs. A device that is harmless during normal use can expose an incompatible driver during setup.
- Check hardware-driver availability. Obtain current drivers for the hardware that setup must initialize, especially storage, network, chipset, and display components. Keep the driver source and version noted so you can identify what changed. Do not install a random driver package merely because its name contains the device model.
- Review the setup error table. Use the error details and the phase in which setup stopped to match Microsoft’s documented setup or upgrade guidance. The same hexadecimal code can be emitted by different setup stages; the phase is more useful than the code alone.
- Consider background software interference. Non-Microsoft antivirus and other security or system utilities can interfere with an upgrade. If Microsoft’s instructions for your setup scenario call for temporarily disabling such software, first confirm that you have the installer or recovery method needed to restore protection, disconnect from untrusted networks while protection is paused, and re-enable it immediately after the test. Do not uninstall security software as a first step.
- Retry with the smallest change set. Reconnect only the peripheral required by setup, run the upgrade again, and note whether the failure occurs at the same percentage or phase. If it succeeds, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so a repeat failure can identify the trigger.
If setup still stops
Do not jump to a registry edit or disk repartitioning based solely on 0x80070057. Preserve the complete setup and event information, including the phase, driver versions, connected hardware, and whether background software was disabled. That record is what distinguishes a driver incompatibility from an installation-media or service problem and is the information Microsoft support guidance expects you to use next.

In the documented BitLocker case, the operating-system drive has no separate active system partition. BitLocker needs boot files in a system area that can remain available while the Windows volume is protected; if that layout is missing, enabling encryption can return this code.
Inspect the layout without changing it
- Sign in with an account that can administer the computer and open Disk Management from the Windows 8 power-user menu.
- Identify the disk containing Windows and look for a small system partition separate from the main Windows volume. Check its status and whether it is marked active; do not assume that a partition is safe to alter from its size or label alone.
- Write down the disk number, partition sizes, labels, and status before closing the tool. If the layout is encrypted or unusual, stop and obtain a backup and recovery plan before proceeding.
Prepare the required partition cautiously
If the separate active system partition is absent, follow Microsoft’s BitLocker partition-preparation guidance for your installation rather than improvising with DiskPart commands. Partition creation, shrinking, moving, formatting, or changing the active flag can make Windows unbootable when performed against the wrong volume. Confirm the target disk, maintain a current backup, and have the BitLocker recovery key available. After preparation, restart if the instructions require it, verify that Windows still boots normally, and only then retry BitLocker.
What not to do
- Do not format a small partition simply because it appears unused.
- Do not delete an existing system or recovery partition to “make room.”
- Do not enable encryption repeatedly while the disk layout remains unchanged; the same missing system partition will produce the same result.
If the partition layout already contains a separate active system area, the documented cause does not explain your occurrence. Record the BitLocker wizard step and seek the guidance for that specific configuration instead of applying the partition remedy blindly.
Fix 0x80070057 while checking Effective Access on a network share
This scenario concerns checking permissions on a share hosted by a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 server. The documented workaround is to map the UNC path to a drive letter and perform the permission check through that mapped path.
Map the share in Windows 8
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- On the ribbon, choose Computer, then Map network drive.
- Select an unused drive letter and enter the complete UNC path in the folder box, for example
\servershare. Use the actual server and share supplied by your administrator; do not add a trailing path that you have not verified. - Choose whether the mapping should reconnect at sign-in. Use Connect using different credentials only when the share administrator has given you a separate account, and enter those credentials through the Windows prompt.
- Open the mapped drive, confirm that it reaches the intended share, and then run the Effective Access check against the mapped location.
A mapped drive changes how Windows addresses the resource; it does not grant additional permissions. The account still needs the appropriate share and file-system rights, and the server administrator may need to review its access-control configuration if the check remains inconclusive.

Understand the version boundary
The Microsoft update associated with this Effective Access problem applies to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. It is not documented as covering Windows 8. Do not install or expect that update to be a Windows 8 fix. On Windows 8, use the mapped-drive workaround and verify the server, share type, and account with the administrator.

System Restore can be affected by a startup program or service that is not active in a minimal environment. Test the least disruptive environment first, then return Windows to its normal startup mode.
Retry from Safe Mode
- Save work and open the Windows 8 power menu. Hold Shift while selecting Restart to enter the recovery menu.
- Choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, and Restart.
- When the numbered list appears, choose the Safe Mode option. Sign in when Windows starts.
- Open System Restore and select the restore point you intended to use. Read the affected-drive and program-change information before confirming.
If the restore completes in Safe Mode, restart normally and verify the application or setting that prompted the repair. Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment; it is not a reason to leave normal startup disabled.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a clean boot if Safe Mode does not help
- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and open System Configuration. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services accidentally.
- Open the Startup tab and use Task Manager to disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and run System Restore again. Note whether the error disappears; that result identifies a startup or service conflict, not a damaged restore point by itself.
- When testing is complete, return to System Configuration, choose Normal startup on the General tab, apply the change, and restart. Re-enable items in groups so a recurrence can identify the conflicting service or startup program.
If System Restore fails in both Safe Mode and a clean boot, preserve the exact restore-point date, drive selection, and full message. Do not repeatedly attempt restores while changing unrelated services, because that makes the cause harder to isolate.
When the error appears somewhere else
For a different wizard, application, or administrative task, 0x80070057 still means that a parameter was rejected, but the supplied facts do not establish one universal Windows 8 command or registry edit. Use this evidence-first procedure:
- Copy the complete message, including punctuation, and note whether it appeared before or after you selected a file, account, disk, server, or other value.
- Record the exact operation, the account used, the Windows edition, and any recent driver, update, policy, partition, or security-software change.
- Capture the relevant setup or event information while the error is reproducible. Preserve the original entries rather than clearing logs.
- Undo only a change that you can identify as the immediate trigger, and create a recovery point or backup before testing another change.
- Search Microsoft’s documentation using the corrected code, the operation name, and the exact message. A result that discusses a different component is not evidence that its fix applies to your case.
Avoid unsafe “universal” fixes
- Do not import a registry file or delete a registry value just because a forum associates it with 0x80070057.
- Do not download DLL files from unofficial repositories. A missing or damaged DLL would be a different diagnostic path, and replacing it blindly can introduce an incompatible or unsafe file.
- Do not repartition a disk unless the failure is specifically the BitLocker system-partition case and you have verified the target layout.
- Do not disable antivirus or firewall protection permanently. If a controlled setup test requires a temporary pause, restore protection immediately afterward.
Verify the result after a successful retry
Verification should match the operation that failed. For setup, confirm that Windows starts normally through at least one restart and that disconnected devices can be reintroduced one at a time. For BitLocker, confirm normal booting before and after encryption begins and keep the recovery key available. For a network share, open the mapped location with the intended account and confirm that the Effective Access result corresponds to the permissions the administrator expects. For System Restore, check the original symptom and then restore Normal Startup before returning the computer to routine use.
If the code returns, stop repeating the same action and update your notes with what changed between attempts. The useful next step is a component-specific diagnosis, not a broader set of unrelated repairs.
