Google Earth Pro normally reports 0x80070057 (not 0X800070057) when Windows rejects a parameter during installation, startup, or a related operation. Microsoft defines this status as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, “The parameter is incorrect.” It is a general Windows code, not proof that one particular Google Earth file, registry key, disk, or graphics driver is defective. Work through the steps below in order: identify where the failure occurs, use Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool when the program opens, and use Google’s current architecture-matched direct installer when setup fails.
First, confirm the code and the failure point
Read the message carefully or take a screenshot before changing anything. The standard code is 0x80070057: one zero after the “7” is not part of it. Hexadecimal letters may appear in upper or lower case, so 0X80070057 and 0x80070057 mean the same thing. The title’s 0X800070057 contains an extra zero and will lead to less useful search results.

Next, note when the message appears. The correct branch matters because an installer failure has different remedies from a graphics-mode crash.

Prepare Windows before repair
Restart once
Choose Start > Power > Restart, wait for Windows to return to the desktop, and try the same operation again. A restart clears pending installer activity and releases files that another process may still hold. This is a general Windows troubleshooting step, not a Google-documented diagnosis of the code.

Record your Windows architecture
For an installation problem, determine whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit before downloading a replacement package. Open Settings > System > About and read System type. Select the installer that matches that architecture; do not assume that a 64-bit computer is running 64-bit Windows.
Protect saved places
If Google Earth Pro still opens, export important places before resetting anything. Use File > Save > Save Place As for individual items or folders and store the resulting KML or KMZ files outside the Google Earth profile. If the Repair Tool later deletes My Places, Google Earth Pro renames the saved file myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml; keep that file until you have confirmed that your places are restored.
Close competing sessions
Exit Google Earth Pro and any installer window before starting a repair. If a window appears frozen, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Google Earth Pro or its installer, and choose End task. Only end a process that you recognize; do not stop unrelated Windows services.

Use Google Earth Pro’s built-in Repair Tool
Google’s official repair sequence is available when Google Earth Pro can open. Open the application, choose Help in the top menu, and select Launch Repair Tool. If prompted, choose Google Earth Pro. Leave the Repair Tool window open, then close Google Earth Pro so the repair actions can operate on a closed profile.
1. Clear disk cache
Select Clear disk cache and let the tool finish. Cached imagery and terrain data can become inconsistent after an interrupted update or storage error. Clearing this cache removes temporary downloaded data, not your saved places. Reopen Google Earth Pro and repeat the action that produced the code.
2. Restore default settings
If clearing the cache did not help, return to the Repair Tool and choose Restore default settings. This resets Google Earth Pro preferences that may contain an invalid value. It is more disruptive than clearing a cache: custom display choices and other preferences may need to be configured again, but your saved places are not the target of this action.

3. Delete My Places only when startup or loading still fails
Use Delete My Places when Google Earth Pro continues to crash or fail while loading saved places after the earlier steps. Google’s tool renames the existing data to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml rather than silently discarding it. Start Google Earth Pro, verify that it reaches the globe, and then open the backup KML to recover places selectively. Do not overwrite the backup until you have checked that every required folder and placemark is available.

For a blank globe, visual corruption, or a crash that occurs when 3D content appears, choose Switch between OpenGL and DirectX. These are different graphics technologies, so changing the mode can avoid a problem in one rendering path. Test the application after the switch by opening the same project or layer that previously failed. If neither mode is stable, Google recommends checking for an updated graphics driver; the error code by itself does not establish that the driver is the cause.
5. Test Safe Mode and atmosphere settings
The Repair Tool also offers Turn on Safe Mode and Turn off atmosphere. Safe Mode is useful for separating a display-related failure from normal profile behavior. Turning off atmosphere reduces one visual effect while you test rendering. These options do not repair Windows or install a driver; they are diagnostic and configuration changes. If the application becomes stable, re-enable one setting at a time to identify which change matters.

Fix an installation or update failure
Download the current direct installer
If Google Earth Pro never opens, the in-app Repair Tool is unavailable. Use Google’s current “Update Google Earth Pro” download page and select the direct installer matching your Windows architecture. The direct-installer listing available at the time of the cited support information identifies version 7.3.7 for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Google states that version 7.1.7 and earlier are no longer supported, so do not rely on an old installer saved on a USB drive or copied from another computer.
Run setup with administrator rights
- Save the downloaded installer to a local folder such as Downloads.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the Windows permission prompt, then follow the setup screens.
- If the same code appears, restart Windows and run the matching direct installer again with other installers and Google Earth Pro closed.
Administrator execution is a practical Windows step; Google’s support pages do not identify it as the unique cause of 0x80070057. If setup fails repeatedly, write down whether the failure occurs while downloading, extracting, or copying files. That detail helps distinguish a package or permission problem from a later startup problem.
Remove an incomplete attempt only when necessary
Do not manually delete random folders or registry entries as a first response. If Windows lists a partially installed Google Earth Pro entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, use its built-in Uninstall command, restart Windows, and run the architecture-matched direct installer. Manual registry editing is not part of Google’s published repair sequence and can create a separate Windows problem.

Apply one change at a time and retest. If several settings are changed together, you cannot tell which one resolved the failure, and restoring your preferred configuration becomes harder.
Check graphics drivers only for graphics symptoms
Google’s guidance connects driver updating with continued problems after changing OpenGL and DirectX. That advice is most relevant when the error coincides with a black or blank globe, flickering, missing 3D objects, or a crash as imagery loads. It is not evidence that every 0x80070057 installation error requires a driver update.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates, restarting when Windows requests it.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics device, and inspect Properties > Driver to record the provider, date, and version.
- Use the graphics-device manufacturer’s official support channel for a compatible driver if an update is needed. Create a restore point or use the manufacturer’s rollback option before replacing a stable driver.
- After the update, test the OpenGL and DirectX modes separately in Google Earth Pro.
A newer driver is not automatically better for every hardware and Windows combination. If a driver update introduces instability, use Device Manager > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that option is available, then retest the previously stable rendering mode.

What the code does—and does not—tell you
MicrosoftDocs’ 2026 error-code table maps 0x80070057 to ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, “The parameter is incorrect.” That description identifies the type of Windows status, not the offending parameter. It does not establish that your disk is full, that a registry value is corrupt, that malware is present, or that a graphics driver is broken. Google’s support pages provide repair and installation procedures but do not publish a unique Google Earth Pro root cause or a guaranteed success rate for this code.
Consequently, be cautious with one-click claims that a single registry edit or a particular file deletion always fixes the problem. A community video may report that a direct installer worked in one case, but that is lower-confidence evidence than Google’s own installer instructions and is not an official guarantee.
Verify the result after each branch
- Installation: confirm Google Earth Pro opens from the Start menu and that Help > About Google Earth shows the installed version.
- Startup: close and reopen the program twice, including after a Windows restart, before concluding that the profile reset helped.
- Saved places: open several folders and placemarks, then keep
myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kmlin a safe location until recovery is complete. - Graphics: test the same 3D view in both rendering modes and note which mode is stable.
- Imagery: allow time for cache data to rebuild after clearing it; an initially empty or low-detail view does not by itself prove that the repair failed.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Stop and document the exact message when the direct installer fails after a restart, administrator launch, and architecture check; when both OpenGL and DirectX fail after a driver check; or when deleting My Places does not change startup behavior. Keep the Windows edition, system architecture, Google Earth Pro version, point of failure, and the steps already attempted. Those details prevent repeating destructive resets and make a support request more actionable.
