If Visual Studio shows 0x800004005, first copy the code again. Microsoft’s Visual Studio material documents 0x80004005 in a Visual Studio 2022 rebuild and file-reopen scenario, while the five-zero form in the title is not found in the Visual Studio sources consulted. That extra zero changes what you should search for and which remedy is sensible. Capture the exact hexadecimal value, the complete message, your Visual Studio edition and version, Windows version, project type, and the action that triggered the error before changing the installation or project files.
Check whether the code is 0x800004005 or 0x80004005
Hexadecimal error codes are easy to mistype when they are copied from a dialog. Compare the displayed value character by character:

Do not select a fix solely from a web search for a similar-looking number. Copy the code and message from the dialog, then check the Error List and Output windows. Visual Studio’s error-help search is also useful because the same general-purpose-looking code can be associated with different operations. An error during setup is handled differently from one raised while a solution is rebuilt.

Prepare before repairing or deleting anything
Both a Visual Studio repair and deletion of .vs can remove or reset local state. Make a short record first so you can restore your working environment.
- Copy the exact code, including capitalization and every zero.
- Save the complete dialog text and the relevant lines from Error List and Output.
- Note whether you use Visual Studio 2022 or another edition, and record the installed version shown by the IDE or Installer.
- Record your Windows version and the project type (for example, the language and project system).
- List extensions, profiles, fonts, key bindings, and other per-user customizations you would need to recreate.
- Close Visual Studio instances before removing project state or working on the Installer directory.
Keep a copy of any text you may need for a support report. If the error disappears after a reset, that record still helps identify what changed and prevents you from repeating a destructive step unnecessarily.
Repair a damaged installation or failed update
When the message appears while Visual Studio is being installed, updated, or repaired, start with the official Installer workflow. Repair is the least speculative installation-level action and is Microsoft’s supported first response for a damaged or corrupted installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu.
- Find the Visual Studio instance that produced the error.
- Select More next to that instance.
- Choose Repair and confirm the operation.
- Allow the Installer to complete. It may reacquire corrupted installation payload files and reinstall assemblies.
- Restart Visual Studio and repeat the action that originally failed.
The normal Installer executable is C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstallersetup.exe. If the Start-menu shortcut is missing, that path can help you locate the Installer, provided the directory still exists.

What repair can reset
Repair is not a project-only reset. Microsoft warns that it can reset the Visual Studio environment and remove local per-user customizations, including extensions, settings, and profiles. Record those items before selecting Repair. Afterward, you may need to reinstall per-user extensions and reapply preferences even if the product itself opens normally.
Because repair changes the installation, use it for an installation or update symptom rather than as the first response to a single solution that fails to rebuild. A project-state problem can often be addressed without changing the whole IDE.
Retry an update after clearing the Installer directory
If the update still fails after repair, Microsoft’s update guidance provides a more targeted recovery sequence. Use it only after closing the Installer and any related setup windows.

- Close Visual Studio Installer completely. Check that no Installer window remains open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstaller. - Delete the
Installerfolder as instructed by the update guidance. - Run the appropriate Visual Studio bootstrapper again:
VisualStudioSetup.exefor Visual Studio 2022 and later, or the edition-specificvs_<edition>.exebootstrapper for an older supported setup. - Let the bootstrapper recreate the Installer components, then retry the update.
This step removes Installer files, not your project source. Nevertheless, do not delete a folder that is still in use, and keep the exact setup message in case the bootstrapper reports a new failure. If Windows refuses the deletion, close every Visual Studio and Installer process and try again; if it remains locked, stop at that point and move to log collection rather than repeatedly forcing the operation.

Fix a rebuild or file-reopen failure by resetting .vs
If the correctly copied code is 0x80004005 and it appears while Visual Studio reopens files, loads a solution, or rebuilds it, Microsoft External Staff guidance in a 2024 Microsoft Q&A answer suggests resetting the project’s hidden .vs directory. This is a context-specific project-state workaround, not a universal explanation of the HRESULT.
- Close every running Visual Studio window for the affected solution.
- Open the project or solution folder in File Explorer.
- Turn on hidden items if necessary, then locate the hidden
.vsdirectory beside the solution or project files. - Delete that
.vsdirectory. If you prefer a reversible test, rename it first and keep the renamed copy until the solution works. - Start Visual Studio as an administrator.
- Open the solution and rebuild it.
The directory contains project-local Visual Studio state, so removing it can force that state to be recreated. It does not repair a broken Visual Studio installation and it is not guaranteed to apply to every project system. If the failure occurs during setup, updating, or launching the Installer, return to the installation procedure instead of deleting .vs.
If the rebuild still fails
Do not keep deleting unrelated folders at random. Confirm that the code and message are unchanged, note whether the failure happens during project load, file reopen, build, or another command, and preserve the new Output and Error List text. The trigger determines whether the next useful step is an installation repair, an update retry, or escalation with setup logs.
Choose the least disruptive remedy
Use this decision table when the same-looking code appears in different parts of Visual Studio:
Rank #4
| Observed symptom | State being changed | Preservation risk | Recommended sequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installer cannot install or update an instance | Product installation and setup payload | Repair can remove per-user extensions, settings, and profiles | Record customizations, then More > Repair; if the update still fails, clear the Installer folder and rerun the bootstrapper. |
| Solution fails while reopening files or rebuilding | Hidden project-local .vs state |
Project state is recreated; keep a renamed copy if you want an easy rollback | Close Visual Studio, remove or rename .vs, run as administrator, and rebuild. |
| Trigger cannot be identified | Unknown | Any reset may hide useful evidence | Capture the exact message, version, action, Error List, and Output first; then collect logs. |
This order avoids using an installation-wide repair to solve a project-local symptom and avoids deleting project state when setup files are the real problem. It also preserves the evidence needed for a useful support request.
Collect setup logs when repair does not resolve the problem
For persistent installation or update failures, collect Visual Studio setup logs with Microsoft’s log-collection tool. The tool creates an archive named vslogs.zip, typically in the user’s %TEMP% directory.
- Run the Microsoft Visual Studio setup-log collection tool after reproducing the failure, so the archive contains the relevant attempt.
- Wait for the tool to finish creating
vslogs.zip. - Open the user temporary directory by entering
%TEMP%in File Explorer’s address bar and locate the archive. - Keep the archive unchanged and note the time at which the failure occurred.
Logs are most useful when paired with the exact hexadecimal code, the complete message, the Visual Studio edition and version, the Windows version, and the action that triggered the error. A log without that context can make it harder to distinguish setup failure from a project-level failure.
Submit a focused Visual Studio report
If repair, the update retry, and the operation-specific .vs reset do not help, use the feedback or support path available in Visual Studio Installer or the IDE. Include:
Best Value
- The exact code as copied from the dialog, including whether it is
0x800004005or0x80004005. - The full error text, not only the first line.
- Visual Studio edition and version, Windows version, and project type.
- The precise action that triggered the message: install, update, launch, reopen, build, or rebuild.
- What you already tried and the result of each step.
vslogs.zipwhen the problem involves setup or updating.
State whether deleting or renaming .vs changed the behavior and whether running as administrator altered the result. This tells support whether the issue is tied to project-local state, permissions, or the installation itself without requiring you to repeat every experiment.
Common mistakes to avoid
Searching for the wrong number
The title’s 0x800004005 and the documented 0x80004005 are not interchangeable strings. Verify the dialog before applying advice written for the other value.
Repairing before recording customizations
Repair can reset the environment and remove per-user extensions, settings, and profiles. Make your list first so a successful repair does not leave you wondering which changes were lost.

Close every Visual Studio instance before removing the hidden directory. If a reversible test is important, rename it and retain the copy until the rebuild succeeds.
Treating a Q&A workaround as a universal fix
The .vs procedure comes from Microsoft External Staff guidance for a rebuild/file-reopen context. It should not be presented as the definition of every occurrence of the code or as a substitute for setup repair.
Sending a report without evidence
A bare code is rarely enough. Include the trigger, complete message, versions, and relevant logs so the report can be matched to the failing component.
Quick Recap
A compact recovery checklist
- Copy the code exactly and check for the extra zero.
- Save the full message plus Error List and Output text.
- Record Visual Studio edition/version, Windows version, project type, and trigger.
- For install or update failures, record customizations and run Visual Studio Installer > More > Repair.
- If updating still fails, close Installer, remove
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstaller, rerun the correct bootstrapper, and retry. - For a rebuild or file-reopen failure involving
0x80004005, close Visual Studio, remove or rename the project’s hidden.vsfolder, run as administrator, and rebuild. - If the issue remains, create
vslogs.zipwith Microsoft’s setup-log tool and submit a detailed feedback or support report.
