The correct remedy depends on that context. First, identify the exact error
Hexadecimal Windows codes are easy to mistype, and one missing zero can point to a completely different procedure. Copy the complete message from the dialog, Settings page, or application log before changing anything.

The title’s 0X8000405 spelling omits a zero compared with 0x80004005. Do not assume that the shorter form means the same thing. Also record the application name, the DLL filename shown in the message, your Windows edition and build, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
What regsvr32 actually does
Microsoft describes Regsvr32 as a utility that “Registers .dll files as command components in the registry.” It calls registration entry points inside a DLL so that COM or ActiveX components can be found by Windows and applications. Registration is not a general-purpose repair for every missing or damaged DLL.

A DLL must expose the expected registration entry point, normally DllRegisterServer. If it does not, Regsvr32 cannot register it, even when the file exists and the filename looks plausible. The DLL must also be the one required by the application, loaded from the correct path, and handled by the Regsvr32 binary that matches its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
Prepare safely before running a registration command
- Copy the complete error text and code exactly, including leading zeros and letters.
- Write down the workflow that produced it: Windows Update, Activation, a named application, or a COM/ActiveX installation.
- Use the exact DLL filename and path supplied by Microsoft or the application’s documentation. Do not download a similarly named DLL from an unofficial site.
- Close the application that uses the DLL. A file in use can prevent registration.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt when registration will write to protected registry locations or system folders.
- Check whether the application and DLL are 32-bit or 64-bit. A registration command can fail when the architecture does not match.
To open the elevated prompt, open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate administrator privileges. A standard prompt may return an access-denied error even when the command itself is correct.
Choose the fix by code and workflow

- If the code is
0x8004005(or the Windows Update article’s0x800C0005) and a scan remains at zero percent, follow the Windows Update DLL-registration procedure below. - If the code is
0x80004005in Windows activation, use the Activation troubleshooter. Do not substitute the Windows Update DLL sequence. - If a third-party application names a DLL, use that product’s instructions for the exact file, path, and architecture. Regsvr32 is appropriate only when the DLL provides the required registration entry point.
- If the code or workflow does not match any of these cases, stop before registering anything and capture the complete Regsvr32 message for the application’s support channel.
Fix the documented Windows Update 0x8004005 case
Microsoft’s Windows Client guidance covers a Windows Update scan that stays at zero percent and can display 0x8004005 or 0x800C0005. In that specific context, register the three named DLLs in sequence.
1. Open an administrator Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator as described above. Registration can modify protected registry information, so an ordinary user prompt may fail.

2. Run the three commands in order
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dllWait for each Regsvr32 result before entering the next command. A successful registration normally produces a confirmation dialog. If Windows cannot locate a file because the current directory is different, use the full path to the DLL instead, for example:
regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%System32Softpub.dll"Use the path and architecture appropriate to the Windows installation and the documented procedure; do not replace these files with similarly named downloads.
3. Restart Windows
Restart after the three commands complete, then run Windows Update again. This procedure is tied to the documented Windows Update scan scenario. It should not be generalized to every appearance of 0x80004005.
If one of the three commands fails
Record the exact dialog text, the code shown by Regsvr32, the command you ran, and whether the prompt was elevated. A failure for one DLL does not justify registering unrelated files. Check that the file path and Windows architecture are correct, then consult Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance or support for the precise failure.
Fix activation-related 0x80004005
When 0x80004005 appears in the Windows activation workflow, Microsoft’s activation support page directs you to the Activation troubleshooter rather than the Windows Update DLL sequence.

- Open Settings.
- Open the activation page. On Windows 10, the documented path is Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
On editions whose Settings layout differs, search Settings for Activation and choose the troubleshooting option on that page. Keep the device connected to the internet and sign in with the account associated with the digital license when Windows requests it. If the troubleshooter reports a licensing, edition, or account problem, follow that specific result; registering the three Windows Update DLLs is not the documented activation remedy.
Register a DLL for a specific application
For a named third-party application, first confirm from the application’s documentation that manual registration is required. Many DLLs are loaded directly by an application and are not COM servers; those files should not be registered merely because a dialog mentions a DLL.
Use the exact file and full path
From an elevated Command Prompt, put the full path in quotation marks when it contains spaces:
regsvr32 "C:PathToRequiredComponent.dll"Do not substitute a file with a similar name, copy a DLL from another computer, or use a random DLL-download site. The application vendor’s instructions should identify the correct file and location.
Match 32-bit and 64-bit components
Windows provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit registration contexts. A 32-bit application normally needs its 32-bit DLL registered with the 32-bit Regsvr32 utility; a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit context. If the filename and path are correct but the entry point or loading step still fails, verify the application’s architecture and use the corresponding system utility and DLL location specified by its documentation.

Do not register a DLL without registration entry points
Regsvr32 expects registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A message saying that the entry point was not found means the file is not a suitable registration target, not that you should try more switches or a different copy of the same file. Return to the application’s installation or support instructions.

For a normal registration, use the plain command with the exact DLL path. The /s switch does not make a failed registration succeed; it only suppresses the result dialog.
Understand common Regsvr32 failures
“The module failed to load”
Check the path, spelling, quotation marks, and whether the DLL’s dependent files are available. Confirm that you are using the correct 32-bit or 64-bit context. Do not assume that a file-not-found message is fixed by registering a different DLL.
“The specified procedure could not be found”
The DLL may not expose the registration entry point Regsvr32 is trying to call, or the file may be the wrong version for the application. Verify the vendor’s required version and registration method.
Access denied or error 0x80070005
Microsoft documents 0x80070005 when a standard user cannot write to the registry or the System32 folder. Close the prompt, open Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and run the documented command again. If an administrator account is unavailable, contact the person who manages the PC rather than weakening folder or registry permissions.

A confirmation appears, but the application still fails
Successful registration only means that the DLL’s registration routine completed. The application may require a different DLL, a matching runtime, a specific version, or a 32-bit/64-bit pairing. Recheck the application’s instructions and the exact path it loads. Do not keep registering unrelated system files.
The command window closes immediately
Run the command from an already open elevated Command Prompt instead of double-clicking a script or DLL. This keeps the result visible so you can record the exact message.
What not to do
- Do not treat
0x80004005and0x8004005as interchangeable. - Do not run the Windows Update DLL sequence for an activation error unless Microsoft’s instructions for your exact case say to do so.
- Do not download replacement DLLs from unofficial websites.
- Do not use
/swhile diagnosing a failure because it hides the response. - Do not change registry permissions or replace protected system files to force registration.
- Do not unregister a component with
/uunless you have a documented rollback or reinstall procedure.
When manual registration is not the right fix
A missing or damaged application installation, a licensing problem, an unsupported component architecture, and a DLL that lacks DllRegisterServer all require different remedies. Regsvr32 cannot repair every crash or error that happens to mention a DLL. If the workflow, code, filename, or architecture is unclear, stop and obtain the application’s exact support instructions.
