How to Fix 0x80004002 When Windows Update or Microsoft Store Fails

Start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, then treat a Microsoft Store failure separately with wsreset.exe. If Windows system files may be damaged, run DISM followed by System File Checker. There is no confirmed universal cause or Microsoft-published exact-code cure for 0x80004002. A Delivery Optimization registry change helped one Windows 11 user in a July 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread, but that is an anecdotal lead—not a general fix.

What error 0x80004002 means in Windows Update and Microsoft Store

0x80004002 is reported when Windows Update cannot download or install an update and when Microsoft Store cannot download or update an app. Those two symptoms can appear on the same computer, but the reports do not prove that both failures always share one cause. The exact-code evidence consists mainly of Microsoft Q&A posts: a recent Windows 11 report and an older Windows 10 report from 2021.

Microsoft’s public support guidance gives general recovery procedures rather than a code-specific explanation. In practical terms, troubleshoot the service that is failing first, then move to deeper system repair only if the symptoms justify it. Avoid assuming that a registry edit, cache reset or command-line repair is guaranteed to resolve every instance.

The location of the failure matters. A Store-only error can be related to Store cache or the conditions Microsoft discusses in its Store troubleshooting guidance, while an update-only error may involve Windows Update components. When both fail, record that pattern as a useful clue, but do not describe it as proof of one shared defect.

Record the failure before changing anything

Good notes prevent you from treating two different problems as one. Write down the exact place where the message appears and the name of the update or Store app involved.

  • Windows Update: note whether the error appears while checking, downloading or installing, and copy any accompanying text.
  • Microsoft Store: record the app name and whether the failure affects one app or every download.
  • Both services: note that relationship, but treat it as a diagnostic clue rather than proof of a shared cause.
  • System details: record Windows edition, version and build from Settings > System > About. Also record whether ordinary network-dependent tasks work.
  • Storage context: note whether the system drive is nearly full. Microsoft’s separate Store troubleshooting guidance discusses low disk space and temporary-folder conditions, so that context can matter even though it is not an established explanation for this code.

Back up important personal files before broader troubleshooting. Microsoft’s general guidance recommends a backup before repair work; a USB flash drive is one practical destination. The drive protects your files, but it is not a fix for 0x80004002. Make sure the backup has completed and can be opened before attempting system repair or a registry change.

Step 1: Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

For Windows 11, Microsoft currently says to begin with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. This is the lowest-risk first intervention because it checks common update configuration and service conditions without asking you to edit the registry or replace system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the guided checks and allow the app to apply a recommended repair when one is offered.
  4. Restart Windows if the troubleshooter requests it.
  5. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Keep the result, including any message that says a problem was fixed or could not be fixed. The troubleshooter is official general guidance; Microsoft does not state that it specifically cures error 0x80004002. If you are using Windows 10, the labels and available Get Help flow can differ from the current Windows 11 instructions, so record your edition and build rather than assuming the same interface.

Test the same operation that originally failed rather than switching immediately to a different update or app. A repeatable failure gives support a clearer record, while a one-time success should be logged without being treated as proof that the underlying cause has been identified.

Step 2: If Microsoft Store fails, clear its cache

When the error is tied to a Store download or app update, Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Store-cache reset. It is appropriate for a Store-specific symptom even when Windows Update itself is working.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears briefly. Do not close it manually.
  4. When the process finishes, Microsoft Store should open automatically.
  5. Try the same app download or update again and record whether the result changes.

This procedure clears Store cache data; Microsoft’s Store guidance discusses it as general troubleshooting and does not promise that it resolves this exact error code. If only one app still fails after the reset, note that app’s name and preserve the error text for support rather than repeatedly resetting the cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also compare the Store symptom with the conditions described in Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting material, particularly available disk space and the temporary-folder situation. Those checks are relevant context, not a verified 0x80004002 remedy. A Store cache reset should not be presented as a cure for a Windows Update failure that happens to occur on the same PC.

Step 3: Repair Windows files with DISM and SFC when evidence points to corruption

Use command-line repair when Windows components themselves may be damaged—for example, when several Windows features fail, the troubleshooter reports component problems, or the same update error persists after the basic checks. Microsoft documents this order: run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC).

  1. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
  3. Wait for DISM to reach completion before entering another command. Interrupting it can leave the repair unfinished.
  4. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow.
  5. Wait for SFC to finish, restart Windows, and test Windows Update or Store again.

DISM ordinarily obtains replacement files through Windows Update. That matters when Windows Update is the failing component: DISM may be unable to obtain the files it needs if the update path is itself impaired. An error from DISM is therefore useful diagnostic information, not evidence that the command should be run repeatedly. Save the exact DISM and SFC results and move to support if the repair cannot complete.

Run the commands in the documented order and wait for each one to finish. SFC is not a substitute for a DISM operation that has not completed, and repeating either command without recording its result does not add diagnostic value. If the commands report that files were repaired, restart and retest the original operation; do not claim that the report proves those files caused the original code.

Optional, case-specific lead: the Delivery Optimization service

A volunteer moderator’s answer to a Microsoft Q&A question published in July 2026 suggested changing the Delivery Optimization service’s startup value. The question author later replied, “Everything is working, thank you very much!” That response documents one successful case, not a controlled test or a Microsoft-published remedy.

The suggested change was:

  1. Back up the registry or create a restore point before making any change.
  2. Open Registry Editor with administrative permission.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDoSvc.
  4. Open the Start value, set its type to DWORD (32-bit) if necessary, and set the value data to 3.
  5. Close Registry Editor, restart Windows, and check for updates.

Do not treat this as the usual cause of 0x80004002. Verify your Windows build and existing service configuration first, and do not apply unrelated registry edits copied from forum posts. If the change creates a new service or update problem, restore the backed-up value or use the restore point, then seek qualified help.

This option belongs after the official, lower-risk steps because its evidence is narrow: one volunteer recommendation and one user’s positive follow-up. It does not establish the correct setting for every Windows edition, build or managed computer. Readers who cannot confidently identify the existing value should skip the edit and provide their notes to Microsoft support or a qualified technician.

Choose the next step by symptom and evidence

Situation First action Intervention depth Evidence strength
Windows Update fails on Windows 11 Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help Built-in guided troubleshooting Microsoft general guidance
Microsoft Store download or app update fails Run wsreset.exe Store-cache reset Microsoft general Store guidance
Several Windows components behave abnormally or corruption is suspected Run DISM RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow Elevated system-file repair Microsoft documented repair procedure
Persistent failure after basic steps and matching Delivery Optimization symptoms Consider the DoSvc value only after a backup and build check Registry modification Single volunteer-reported case

This is an order of operations, not a list of competing products. Start with the narrowest step that matches the symptom, preserve the result, and increase intervention depth only when the earlier step fails or points toward a deeper problem. Nothing in the documented guidance makes a paid repair utility necessary.

What not to conclude from a temporary success

If clearing the Store cache fixes a Store download, that does not establish that the Windows Update service was damaged. Likewise, a successful DISM run does not prove that system-file corruption caused the original code; it only shows that the repair completed. Keep the symptom, command result and Windows build together in your notes so a later failure is not misdiagnosed as the same problem.

There is no qualifying prevalence figure or published success rate for this exact code. Do not rely on claims that a particular utility, registry script or one-click repair works for everyone. The documented evidence does not support buying a paid repair program as a necessary step.

When to contact Microsoft support or a technician

Escalate when the troubleshooter cannot complete, DISM cannot obtain repair files, SFC reports files it cannot repair, or both Windows Update and Store continue to fail after the relevant steps. Provide:

  • the exact 0x80004002 message and where it appeared;
  • the failed update or Store app name;
  • Windows edition, version and build;
  • the date and sequence of each troubleshooting step;
  • the final output from DISM and SFC, if you ran them; and
  • whether the Delivery Optimization value was changed and what it was before the change.

Include whether ordinary network-dependent tasks worked, whether the failure affected one Store app or all downloads, and whether the problem returned after a restart. Those details help separate a Store-only symptom from a broader update-component issue without pretending that the pattern identifies a single cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available documentation cannot diagnose a particular computer remotely. A support technician can use your recorded results to distinguish an update-component problem from a Store-only cache issue, system-file corruption or a separate device configuration problem.

Bottom line

Treat 0x80004002 as a symptom, not a diagnosis. Separate Windows Update from Microsoft Store behavior, run Microsoft’s Windows 11 Get Help troubleshooter first, reset Store cache only for Store symptoms, and use DISM followed by SFC when system corruption is plausible. Keep the Delivery Optimization registry change as a cautious, case-specific last resort rather than a universal answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x80004002 a Windows Update-only error?

No. Users have reported it during Windows Update and Microsoft Store downloads or app updates. Those reports do not prove that both services share one cause, so troubleshoot the service where the error appears.

What should I try first on Windows 11?

Microsoft currently recommends starting with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Follow its guided checks, restart if requested, and test the original update again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will wsreset.exe definitely fix 0x80004002 in Microsoft Store?

No. Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a general Store-cache reset. It may help a Store-specific problem, but Microsoft does not describe it as a verified cure for this exact code.

Can DISM repair this error if Windows Update is broken?

DISM can use Windows Update to obtain replacement files, so an impaired update path may prevent DISM from completing. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then sfc /scannow, and save any error output for support.

Should I change the DoSvc registry value?

Treat that as an optional, case-specific lead only. A volunteer moderator recommended setting the Delivery Optimization Start value to DWORD 3 in one July 2026 Microsoft Q&A case, and the question author reported success. It is not a Microsoft-published universal fix; back up first or seek qualified help.

What information should I give Microsoft support?

Provide the exact message, whether it occurred in Windows Update, Store or both, the failed update or app, Windows edition/version/build, the steps and dates you tried, and the DISM, SFC or registry results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

There is no confirmed universal fix for 0x80004002. Separate Windows Update and Store symptoms, start with Microsoft’s Get Help troubleshooter, use wsreset.exe for Store-specific failures, run DISM followed by SFC when corruption is plausible, and treat the Delivery Optimization registry edit as anecdotal—not a guaranteed remedy.
